Apollo 11 Entree
The country is set to welcome a new head of state, Shri. Ram Nath Kovind. The
14th president of India, a former advocate in the Delhi high court and the Supreme
Court and an erstwhile legislator and governor, was elected with a huge majority. Let
us join the nation in wishing him a fruitful term at the helm. On a solemn note, Team
Voyage pays obeisance to our former chairman U.R.Rao, who passed away recently. On
the occasion of the 70th anniversary of Indias independence, let us also spare a moment
to reminisce about the countless courageous men and women who sacrificed their lives
in the arduous struggle for freedom. The country is treading the path of progress in the
social, economic, technological and educational sectors slowly, but steadily.
Undoubtedly, one of the most noteworthy achievements of the last month was
the brilliant performance of the Indian womens cricket team in the ICC womens world
cup. Though the women in blue missed the final triumph by a whisker, the fighting
spirit of the team, their positive attitude and determination captured the hearts of the
entire nation. Till recently, the authorities were meting out a secondary treatment to
the womens team, despite their accomplishments being on par with those of their
more renowned, more popular and wealthier male counterparts. How many of us are
aware, for instance, that the captain Mithali Raj tops the chart for runs scored in One
Day Internationals and Jhulan Goswami, a veteran pace bowler is the leading wicket
taker in ODIs in the world? Arent their records as illustrious as those of decorated
male cricketers like Virat Kohli or R Ashwin? The scintillating performances of young
players like Smriti Mandhana, Harmanpreet Kaur and Punam Raut are also worth
mentioning.
The womens team displayed remarkable grit in winning tough matches and
defeated top-ranking teams like Australia and New Zealand before progressing to the
title clash to challenge England. In doing so, they made the country sit up and take
notice and were rewarded by the cricketing authorities, deservedly, with money and
promotions. Even today, one of the prime motivations for many of the girls to pursue
the sport is the promise of employment, with a majority of the team serving the
Railways and Air India. It is high time the womens team was provided the same level
of support, encouragement, opportunities and facilities as the celebrated mens team.
The phenomenal display of this team will certainly inspire numerous young girls in the
country to chase their dream and take up the sport as a profession. Heres to wishing
the Indian womens cricket team a glorious future!
Cheers,
