Job purpose
The Team Leader is the senior professional officer within the team with responsibility for food hygiene,
health and safety, infectious disease and smoke-free related issues, and has managerial responsibility
for up to 7 professional and technical staff, and the delivery of the work programme. The Team
Leader will support the Shared Food and Safety Manager in the delivery of food and safety functions
and is responsible for providing technical support to the team.
The post holder will also undertake proactive and reactive work, namely food hygiene and health and
safety inspections and responding to a range of service requests.
Main duties and responsibilities
line manage a team of officers, undertaking formal appraisals and regular one to one meetings.
carry out performance monitoring and quality reviews of the work undertaken in the Food and
Safety Team with the objective of ensuring consistency across the service, and compliance with
relevant legislation, codes of practice, approved guidance and corporate policies.
provide technical support, training and helping with the development of others in the service.
guide officers in the investigation of complaints, responding to requests for service, and in the
implementation of legislation, including supporting officers when they are taking formal action.
undertake programmed inspections and project work, and investigate service requests including
complaints about food and premises, notifiable diseases and reportable incidents, exercising
enforcement powers as required.
develop, maintain and implement operational plans, policies, procedures and strategies to improve
and maintain efficiency and effectiveness for the Food and Safety Team.
provide specialist food and safety advice within the council as required.
ensure the Food and Safety Manager is kept fully informed on any aspect of work which is

controversial, political, strategic, financial or otherwise of a sensitive or highly complex nature.
assist the Food and Safety Manager and deputising as appropriate in their absence.
undertake such other duties as may reasonably be requested by the Head of Service.
