1.

Jam nut - AN316-3 The function of the jam nut is to have something for
the regular nut to be torqued against when it is not tightened up on the
substrate. An example of an adjustment joint is turnbuckle. Here the jam
nut doesnt carry of the tension load. In preload joints the jam nut does
carry some of the tension load, typical one sees the thinner nut on the top.
2. Plain nut AN315-3 - Nut-strength is typically defined as "Proof Load"
or "Proof Stress" rather than Ultimate Tensile Strength in pounds. In either
case, the concept is the same, the bolt should fail before the nut. Proof
load corresponds with the axially applied load the nut must support
without any evidence of failure. The Nut Proof Load should be at least
equal to the bolt's Tensile strength to use the full capabilities of the bolt.
3. Mexcian hat nut NAS679-A04 -his nut comes in both steel and CRES
Material: Carbon steel, 125,000 psi (861,844 kPa) tensile strength (A in part number)
Material: CRES (Corrosion resistant steel C in part number)
Finish: Cadmium plated with molybdenum dry film lubricant
Finish: Replace A for X with no dry film lubricant
Maximum Temperature A - 450 degrees F. (232 C.)
Maximum Temperature C - 800 degrees F. (427 C.)
4. Exhaust nut MS20500 - Exhaust-nut used on Continental-470, 520, and
550 series engines. This is a 1/4-28 inch silver plated, stainless steel
locknut rated to 1,200 degrees F. (649 C.) and 125,000 psi (861,844 kPa)
ultimate tensile strength and made to the UNJ Class 3 thread standard.
This is a quality nut!
5. Shear castle nut AN320-1 - Castle nuts are used in applications where
the bolt is used as a pin and all you need to do is keep the nut from falling
off. They are not good for maintaining preload.
Per the AN drawings: "All AN310-nuts are universally interchangeable with AN355 nuts,
6. Spring beam nut MS21045-02 - This type of nut has thin slots cut
down through the top few threads with the resulting fingers bent slightly
inward. At installation, the bolt springs the fingers out and the fingers grip
the bolt with a prevailing torque. "This nut does not deform the bolt or
stud threads and can be used on frequently removed items. Before reusing,
check the nut for loss of elasticity of the segments by installing on lightly
oiled clean threads.
7. Elastic stop shear nut MS21083N-02 - unction is to prevent the nut
from backing off when bolt tension has been lost. The prevailing torque
locknut retains its locking ability even when the preload or tightening
torque has been lost. What we in the field call elastic lock or stop nuts or
self-locking nuts (or if you are older - fiber lock nut) are called
"prevailing-torque-locknut" by engineers. This is because they require
additional torque to assemble.
Machine screw MS35266 - Phillister head general purpose fine
thread machine screw for non-structural applications. Carbon steel
and cadmium plate to 60,000 psi UTS minimum. Drilled for safety
wire.
Cadmium plate II MS24693 - Countersunk flat head screws are
generally used in shear pin style joints where the load is in
shearing across the shank. If the joint is preload dependent or has
axial forces applied to the screw then it is generally not used in
safety-critical joints.

Hardened washer NAS1587-A3C - asher, Plain and

Countersunk, High Temperature
Material: 321 or 347 stainless steel
Maximum Temperature: 1,200 degrees F. (677 C.)
Strength: 75 Ksi uts (517 MPa
Add C after the dash size for countersunk
Add L after dash size for half-thickness non-countersunk washer
Discussion:Maximum allowable bearing stress is approximately 40,000 psi (276 MPa)
when using this washer on 7075-T6-aluminum joint material. In some high-strength
bolts, increased washer strength and area should be considered when a greater bolt
preload is required.

FLAT WASHER AN960-2 - Maximum Temperature:

450 degrees F.
Inactive for new design. NAS1149 may be substituted in all applications.
AN960C for corrosion resistant steel (stainless)
AN960B for commercial brass
AN960PD for aluminum alloy anodized
For use on bolts up to 160-180 ksi tensile strength per MIL-STD-1515A, table 209I
where appropriate. (Some high-strength bolts may have a large shank to head radius and
require a MS20002 (NAS143) countersunk washer.)
WIDE AREA WAHSER AN970-3 - Useful on wood
surfaces due to their large bearing surface.
External star lock washer MS35335-29 - Should be
used whenever possible as the tapered twisted teeth are on
the largest radius (stick out the furthest) and provide the
maximum resistance to twisting. Make sure the screw head
is large enough to make contact with the teeth.
In corrosive environments, avoid the use of toothed lockwashers on plated or anodized
surfaces.
