Differentiated Instruction

What is Differentiated Instruction?

Differentiated instruction, or differentiation is a way
of teaching. Differentiation is a way teachers give
students multiple options for taking in information.
Differentiation acknowledges all students are
different. Teachers must observe and understand the
similarities and differences among students and use
this information to plan their instruction.

Key Principles of Differentiated Instruction

Student-Centered activitiesThe student plays a more active role in the classroom than the
teacher
Ongoing, formative assessmentTeachers continually assess students to identify their
strengths and areas in which they need assistance or additional scaffolding. Identifying areas of
weaknesses help teachers to quickly find ways to move students forward
Recognition of diverse learnersTeachers must understand that students have diverse levels of
expertise in all subjects. They are also different in the strategies they use to learn. Teachers
should address students individual skills and interests. Teachers can create a learning profile to
keep track of students preferred learning styles
Group WorkLearning in groups enables students to engage in meaningful discussions and
learn from one another. The teacher should stay attentive to students who may do better in
pairs or working individually.
Problem SolvingThe focus of differentiated instruction classrooms are on issues and
concepts rather that the textbook. Teachers should encourage students to explore big ideas and
expand their understanding
ChoiceAutonomy is one of the best ways to increase student motivation and engagement.
Differentiate the Curriculum
Content: What the students need to learn.
Process: Activities, homework assignments, and assessments
that students will participate in to understand and master the
content information
Product: The finished products that students will turn in to
demonstrate that they understand the information that has been
taught
Learning Environment: The classroom conditions
