Thestandard"OpenAllianceBroadR-Reach"(OABREthernet)hasbeenspeciallydevelopedasa
newdatatransmissionlayerforuseinvehicles.OABREthernetonlyrequiresanunshieldedtwisted
two-wireconnection.OABREthernetsupportsbidirectional100MBit/scommunicationbetween2
nodes.Thismeansthatbothnodescansimultaneouslysendandreceiveatadatatransferrateof
100MBit/s.OABREthernetrequirespoint-to-pointnetworking.Thismeansthatthebussystemis
notsplitupbetweenmultiplenodes,asisthecasee.g.withControllerAreaNetwork(CAN)systems.
Instead,Ethernetswitchesareusedfortheconnectionoffurthernodes.Today,Ethernetswitches
areintegratedinthefollowingcontrolunits:BodyDomainController(BDC),HeadUnit(HU),optional
equipmentsystem(SAS),TopRearSideViewCamera(TRSVC).AnEthernetswitch(ENS)isused
ontheG30dependingonthevehicleequipment.IntheeventoffailureofanEthernetswitch,all
bususersconnectedbyitaredisconnectedfromtherestofthenetworkandarenolongerableto
communicateviaEthernet.

Dependingonthevehicleequipment,thecontrolunitsareconnectedtothevehicleelectrical
systemindifferentways.

OnvehicleswithNavigation,thedatatransfertakesplacefromtheHeadUnitHightotheinstrument
clusterviaanAPIXdatacable.

DependingonthevehicleequipmentanEthernetswitchmayinsomecasesberequired.

Awake-uplinemayberequiredforcontrolunitsthatareonlyconnectedtotheEthernetand
arenotadditionallyconnectedtoabodyCAN.

ControlunitsontheEthernetcannotbewokenupviathebus.Instead,thecontrolunitsareactivated
viathewake-uplineorswitcheddirectlyviaterminal15.Asaresultoftheactivationviaawake-upline,
so-calledpartialnetworkoperationisalsopossible.Inpartialnetworkoperation,individualcontrolunits
canswitchtoareststateindifferentvehicleconditions.

OnvehicleswithHeadUnitHigh,theTelematicCommunicationBox(TCB)andtheRearSeat
Entertainmentaredirectlyconnectedtotheheadunit.ThedatatransferfromtheHeadUnitHighto
theinstrumentclustertakesplaceviaAPIX.TheinstrumentclusterdoesnotrequireEthernet.Asa

Thepreconditionsforthedirectionoftheenergymanagementarecalculatedfromtheuseofthe
vehicle.Whentheengineisrunningtheauxiliarybatteryischargedfromtheconventionalvehicle
electricalsystem.Duringthephasesinwhichthecombustionengineisnotrunning,e.g.automatic
start/stopfunction,theenergyissuppliedfromtheauxiliarybatteryintotheconventionalvehicle
electricalsystem.
