Agent Orange approved
By GLENNA HANLEY
Three New Brunswick companies
and the department of natural resoure
fs have been given permits to use the
defoliant Agent Orange and the Con
cerned Parents Group say they are
dismayed that the spray, a highly toxic
mixture of 24:D and 245°T, will be
allowed again this summer.
‘Agent Orange, used during the
Vietnam War, iss 50:50 mixture of
24-0 and2,4.9°T, The herbicide 24,8 T
contains dioxin and has been linked to
miscarriages, birth defects and cancer,
Is banned in the Netherlands, Italy.
Norway. Sweden and prohibited for
forest use in the United States. In
Canada, British Columbia, Manitoba,
and Ontario have discontinued its use
‘The Concerned Parents say research
indieates that workers exposed to the
phenoxy herbicides 2.4.5-T and 24D
had a greater risk of developing cancer
and that 2,4-D causes birth defects and
cancer in animals

‘The Concerned Varents say the
environment minister denied their re

when and where the spraying will take
place
The environment minister is out of
the province but in his absence Dr.
esner said the areas to be sprayed are
so small they would not be visible on &
‘map such as the one published for the
spruce budworm spray program.
He added that this spraying is not as
Widespread as the budworm spraying,
If people come into the depart nent
office we will show them the areas.”
Dr. Besuer said. He added that the
rmunister may be making an announce
ment next week about providing the
public with additional information. The
companies will be informing the de
partment of their timetable for spray
BUFFER ZONE,
‘To protest human habitation Dr.
esner said fixed wing aireraft used in
the spraying cannot spray within five
miles of any human habitation and
helicopters must leave a but
fer zone of two miles,
In addition he said access to the
target areas must be closed off and the
areas cleared of people.
Last summer residents of the Mill:
stream area opposed the J.D. Irving
Company's plans to use Agent Orange
spray in their area and succeeded in
having the spraying stopped.
