Station cops new device

Bacchus Marsh Police are now equipped
with tasers.
The first officers armed with the Conducted
Energy Devices (CEDs) took to the streets
last week, as part of a statewide rollout to 24-
hour police stations.
The regional rollout began in early 2016
following extensive trials in pilot stations.
Bacchus Marsh Acting Senior Sergeant,
Barry Hills said the devices were of great
benefit to local police.
The tasers were introduced some time ago
and are now being rolled out to regional
police stations. The devices provide other
options for managing critical incidents, he
said.
Our members have undertaken extensive
training regarding the legislation in which
they are bound by when using the devices.
While we hope that we never actually have
to put them to use, it is a powerful and
beneficial tool if we do.
Deputy Commissioner, Wendy Steendam
said more police would now have further
non-lethal options when dealing with violent
people and those threatening self-harm.
Unfortunately, over recent years there has
been an increase in the number of incidents
where police have been confronted by armed
and violent people and those who are drug
or alcohol affected, she said.
These are often physical confrontations
where police, members of the community
and the individuals themselves are at risk of
being injured.
Once our officers are trained in their use,
CEDs can provide an additional tactical
option to help resolve some of these high risk
incidents.
They can only be used when its believed it
will prevent death or serious injury. In many
cases, the presentation of a CED alone can
help to safely diffuse a situation.
Ms Steendam said officers were required
to undertake a two-day course before being
able to carry CEDs.
In total, police at 36 stations will have CEDs,
with the rollout continuing until mid-2018.

Hope continues to grow

For ten years, Moorabool resi-
dents have laced up their sneak-
ers and counted laps and dollars
in the fight against cancer.
Their efforts have paid off, with
close to $700,000 raised and do-
nated to the worlds largest can-
cer fundraising event, Relay for
Life.
This year, the goal is the same: to
raise as much money as possible
for Cancer Councils research,
prevention and support services.
Moorabool Relay for Life Chair-
person, Gillian Loughman said
she hoped to see anyone who
had participated in the event be-
tween 2008 and 2016 to return for
the milestone event.
It takes a village to grow hope,
which is what this years theme is
based on. If the whole of Moora-
bool can get together as a village
and get involved in the cause, it
would be amazing, she said.
The support from the town
is very important and we are
always looking for more teams.
This year we are hoping to see
more schools and young people
join in, as we need young people
to carry the event forward.
In 2016, the community based
fundraising event moved from
Maddingley Park Oval to the
Darley Civic and Community
Hub.
Ms Loughman said the change
had been beneficial to the event,

as the venue now accommodated
small campervans and camper
trailers on the oval.
Its great for people to be able to
camp onsite, especially for those
with young children.
Like always, we encourage peo-
ple to come down, have fun and
raise money for a good cause.
Ms Loughman said the over-
night event offered live music
and activities for the whole
family.
I am quite biased, as I enjoy
all aspects of the event, but the
candlelight and opening cer-
emonies are always very mov-
ing. This year, like other years,
survivors and carers will lead off
the opening ceremony alongside
bagpipes.
Relay for Life is a way for
everyone to come together for
the same aim to cure cancer,
because we all want to live in a
cancer free world.
Moorabool Relay for Life will
be held overnight from Saturday
October 21.
The opening ceremony will
commence at 3pm with a candle-
light ceremony later that evening.
The closing ceremony is to be
held at 9am Sunday morning,
October 22. Teams can join on-
line, with early bird submission

Guilty plea in death crash

A Kurunjang man has pleaded
guilty to culpable driving
causing death after crashing
into a tree at the Bacchus Marsh
Avenue of Honour, killing one
passenger.
Paul Smith was driving a
Holden ute along Bacchus
Marsh Road at about 2am
on March 25 this year, when
he lost control of the vehicle,
which left the road and crashed
into a tree, and then a shed.
His passenger, 22-year-
old New Gisborne resident
Hayden Kloppers, died at the
scene.
Smith, 25, appeared in the
Melbourne Magistrates Court
for a brief committal mention
on Tuesday August 1.
He was bailed to appear in
Melbourne County Court in
late January 2018.
Lost & Found
Two garden gnomes have been found abandoned in a
Gordon bus shelter.
Quite aged and covered in dirt and moss, the gnomes
must belong to someone. Do you know where they live?
The two gnomes are currently living temporarily at the
Gordon General Store.
If you recognise these gnomes or know their owners
please contact the Gordon store so they can continue living
in the garden of their owners home.

Hundreds of cannabis
plants have been found
growing inside an Old Mel-
bourne Road home in Ballan.
Police officers executed a
warrant at the premises at
around 2pm on Friday (July
28).
Hayden Kloppers died at the scene earlier this year after
a car crash in the Avenue of Honour, in which he was a Senior Detective at Moora-
passenger. bool CIU, Joshua Coy said
more than 200 cannabis
plants were found through-
out the house. Two male oc-
cupants of the house were
arrested and charged with
cultivation offences. They
are set to appear in Court
later this year.
Police are asking for com-
munity assistance to locate a
missing black lamb. The dis-
tinctive lamb was last seen
on a property in Cartons
Road, Gordon on July 30.

the backyard of a Simpsons
Street Ballan premises fol-
lowing a short chase on July
31. The 33-year-old allegedly

trates Court on September

Ready, set walk, jog, run

More than 304 residents,
and 2 dogs, will help cel-
ebrate the opening of the
new Halletts Way southern
extension as part of Moora-
bools first Run 4 Fun.
The extension is the largest
infrastructure project ever
delivered by Moorabool
Shire Council, and will pro-
vide a western link road for
Bacchus Marsh.
The official opening starts
at 10.30am, with the commu-
nity fun run to follow, this
Sunday, August 13.
The free event will com-
mence on the corner of Hal-
letts Way and McLachlan
Street, with three courses
covering one, four and
five-kilometres.
The short course will take
runners and walkers along
Halletts Way, while the four-
kilometre track includes
Werribee Vale Road and
the extended course covers
OLeary Way.
Race bibs will be provided,
with a chip enabling those
involved to be timed. Re-
sults will be published in the
Moorabool News on August
22.
The official opening will
also include activities on site
including a free community
barbeque, jumping castle,
petting zoo, face painting,
popcorn and fairy floss.
Coffee will also be available
as well as a baked potato
vendor.
A water bottle refill station
will be provided alongside
portable toilets and first aid.
Parking will be available on
site.

Thieves have targeted a lo-
cal country fire station by
cutting open a hole in the
front door of a shed.
Police were called to the
Millbrook CFA station on the
morning of Saturday July 27,
after a Stihl brand chainsaw
was reported stolen.

They cut a hole in the front
door sometime on Friday
night and only went for the
one thing. The hole was no-
ticed by a passer-by on Sat-
urday morning.
The chainsaw is valued at
$1,500, so with that and the
damage to the front door, I
daresay we are about $2,000-
$2,500 out of pocket.
Its disappointing, because
these are vital tools that we
need to help others.

Anniversary is precious

Its a wedding anniversary that very

few couples will see but Bacchus
Marshs Marie and James (Jim)
Ginnane are about to celebrate 70 years
of marriage.
The traditional gift is platinum (a
precious silvery-white metal), however
many charts on the topic do not even
extend beyond the 70-year mark.
For Marie and Jim, it all started after

are well-known, the brave
adventures of immigrant
women are often untold.
The Good Girl Song Pro-
ject combines old fashioned
storytelling with new Celtic
flavoured songs to recount
a voyage taken by young
women to Australia in the
1830s.
Written by Helen Begley
and based on the academic
work of Liz Rushen, the
theatrical song cycle will be
performed by seven of Aus-
tralias leading folk musi-
cians at the Ballan RSL Hall
on Saturday August 26.

age from Gravesend, Eng-
land to Sydney where they
are introduced to the immi-
gration experience through

The Good Girl Song Project
has been presented at many
festivals and is currently
being adapted for site spe-
cific performances in Mel-
bourne on the tall ship En-
terprize and other spaces
that have links to colonial
immigration.
The theatre piece uses origi-
nal songs by Helen Begley
and words of the 1830s to
trace the journey of the colo-
nial women and the embed-
ded historical line that has
influenced the women of
