First Five Content Lessons for 6th Grade Math

DAY 1:
TEKS: The student is expected to apply mathematics to problems arising in everyday life, society,
and the workplace.
Activities: Ms. Clifford will introduce classroom routines and expectations, as well as what students
will learn throughout the upcoming school year. Ms. Clifford will take time to begin to get to know
her students and share relevant information about herself. Ms. Clifford will introduce the concept of
math as a language and discuss with students why math is important.

DAY 2:
TEKS: The student uses mathematical processes to acquire and demonstrate mathematical
understanding. The student will be able to add and subtract whole numbers.
Activities: Students will dive into the concept of math as a language and begin working on word
problems focused on addition and subtraction. Towards the end of class, Ms. Clifford will introduce
problems focused on multiplication and division to gage students level of knowledge of these four
key mathematical processes and again make connections to math as a language.

DAY 3:
TEKS: The student uses mathematical processes to acquire and demonstrate mathematical
understanding. The student will be able to add and subtract whole numbers. The student will be able
to multiply whole numbers.
Activities: Students will practice more problems focused on addition and subtraction, as well as
explore the relationship between multiplication and division. Ms. Clifford will review the processes
of addition and subtraction as well as multiplication and division.

DAY 4:
TEKS: The student uses mathematical processes to acquire and demonstrate mathematical
understanding. The student will be able to multiply whole numbers.
Activities: Ms. Clifford will review the processes of multiplication and division. Students will practice
multiplication and division after modeling by Ms. Clifford. Students will brainstorm topics about
which they would like to create word problems.

DAY 5:
TEKS: The student uses mathematical processes to acquire and demonstrate mathematical
understanding. The student will be able to multiply whole numbers.
Activities: Students will create word problems for their peers, focused on the four main processes of
addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. Students will then trade word problems with a
partner, and work in groups of three to solve these problems.
