Qualitative and Quantitative Chemistry
Midterm Exam

Name: ________________________________ Score: _________

Date: ___________

I. Modified TRUE or FALSE. Identify the following statement whether the statement is TRUE or
FALSE. Write QQC if the statement is true. And if the statement is false, underline the wrong
word(s) then write the appropriate/right word(s) on the space provided. (2 points each)

________1. The molar mass is just the mass in grams of 2 mol of a substance calculated by
summing the atomic masses of all atoms appearing in the chemical formula.
________2. Gravimetric method is a qualitative method that are based on determining the mass
of a pure compound to which the analyte is chemically related.
________3. When an aggregate of atoms, ions, or molecules is greater than 10-4 m, a precipitate
is formed.
________4. Precipitates of large size are easy to filter and washed free of impurities.
________5. Crystalline suspension are tiny particles are invisible to the naked eye.
________6. Colloidal suspension are particles with dimension on the order of tenths of mm or
greater which settle spontaneously and can be readily filtered.
________7. When (Q-S)/S is large, precipitate tends to be colloidal.
________8. When (Q-S)/S is small, crystalline solid is more likely.
________9. In particle growth, a minimum no. of atoms, ions or molecules join together to give
a stable solid.
_______10. Coagulation is the process of converting a colloidal suspension into a filterable solid.
_______11. Coprecipitation is a process in which normally soluble compounds are carried out
of solution by a precipitate.
_______12. Mixed-crystal formation is a type of coprecipitation in which a compound is trapped
within a pocket formed during rapid crystal growth.
_______13. Occlusion is a type of coprecipitation in which a contaminant ion replaces an ion
in the lattice of a crystal.
_______14. Mechanical entrapment occurs when crystals lie close together during growth.
_______15. Adsorption is a process by which ions are retained on the surface of the solid.

II. Answer as directed.(70 points)

A. Perform the following stoichiometric calculations. (Write your solution and answer in
the extra sheet provided)

1. N2 + H2 ---> NH3. Write the mole ratios for N2 to H2 and NH3 to H2.

2. A can of butane lighter fluid contains 3.20 moles of butane (C4H10). Calculate the number
of moles of carbon dioxide given off when this butane is burned.
3. If 2.560 mol of KClO3 decomposes. How many grams of O2 will be produced? [k = 39,
Cl =35.5, O = 16], chemical equation: 2 KClO3 2 KCl + 3 O2

4. How many mole and mmoles are contained in 1.83 g of pure benzoic acid (122.1 g/mol) ?

5. How many grams of Ba+ (22.99 g/mol) are contained in 12.6 g of BaCl2 ?

6. If 80.0 grams of O2 was produced, how many moles of KClO3 decomposed?

chemical equation: 2 KClO3 2 KCl + 3 O2.

7. A sample contains 27.1 g of calcium oxide (CaO). How many moles of calcium oxide are in
the sample?

B. Perform the following gravimetric problems. Show your complete solution and answer
on the extra sheet provided.

1. a) What mass of AgNO3 (169.9 g/mol) is needed to convert 3.24 g of Na2CO3 (106.0 g/mol)
to Ag2CO3 ? (7.47 g)
b) What mass of Ag2CO3 (275.5 g/mol) will be formed? (6.06 g)

2. A 0.3516 g sample of commercial phosphate detergent was ignited at red heat to destroy the
organic matter. The residue was then taken up in HCl, which converted P to H3PO4. The
phosphate was precipitated as MgNH4PO4. 6H2O by addition of Mg2+ followed by aqueous NH3.
After being filtered and washed, the precipitate was converted to Mg2P2O7 (222.57 g/mol) by
ignition at 1000 C. This residue weighed 0.2161 g. Calculate the % P (30.974 g/mol) in the
sample.

3. In the analysis of 0.7011 g of an impure chloride containing sample, 0.9805 g of AgCl were
precipitated. What is the percentage by mass chloride in the sample?
4. A 0.2795 g sample of an organic mixture containing only C6H6Cl6 (290.83) and C14H9Cl5 in
quartz tube. The products (CO2, H2O and HCl) were passed through a solution of NaHCO3. After
acidification, the chloride in the solution yielded 0.7161 g of AgCl (143.22). Calculate the
percentage of each halogen compound in the sample.

Medical students, by studying the word of God diligently, are far better prepared for all other studies; for
enlightenment always comes with an earnest study of the word of God. Let there be genuine discipline in study.
There should be a most humble, prayerful longing of the soul to know the truth. Let the students who go to
obtain a medical education at the medical institutions of our land learn all they possibly can of the principles of
life, but let them discard error, and not become bigots. {PH066 34.1}
