The gospel truly is a gospel of joy and our missionary work should be as well. Whenever I find a
missionary who is not feeling the joy of this great calling, I become concerned. I have said
before that one of Satans most powerful tools is discouragement. One of the most common
challenges that I see from my position as the mission president is missionaries who have been
working incredibly hard and have not been seeing much success. When that happens, it IS
easy to get down, be discouraged, feel that you have lost your touch, wonder if you are
doing something wrong, or that you are being punished by the Lord for some reason. During
my mission to the West Spanish American Mission in 1969, I had one stretch during which I had
no baptisms for almost 8 months (in a high-baptizing mission). I began to wonder if I was not a
very good missionary and one night I went up to the attic of the apartment in which I was
staying in San Francisco. I poured out my heart to the Lord and asked why it was so hard, why
I was not having success, and why I couldnt baptize despite the fact that I was working
incredibly hard and being exactly obedient. The Spirit touched my heart and spoke to me
and let me know that the Lord was very pleased with my offering, that he didnt measure my
covenant heart with the numerical quantity of baptisms, and that I would be blessed for my
diligence. I felt great peace after that experience and began to relax and truly find joy in the
work. I knew that I was out raising a voice of warning and giving His children a chance, I was
being obedient, and I was working very hard. Incidentally, the Lord blessed me with more
baptisms the last part of my mission that the entire previous part of my mission. The secret
wasHe was blessing me in His time, not mine. We can be sure that if we are doing all that
we can do, being obedient, loving the people and teaching with the Spirit, the Lord WILL
bless us. He is bound to do so (D&C 82:10).
As I mentioned above, I had inquired of the Lord why it had to be so hard to find those prepared to
hear the gospel. As all of you and I know by now, missionary work is hard. We have to work very
diligently to find and bring to baptism those the Lord has prepared. Satan tries so hard to get in the
way and does everything to throw a wrench in the works. One might ask, Why doesnt the Lord just
make it easier for us? We could accomplish so much more and the Church could grow so much
faster. Elder Jeffrey R. Holland provided the best answer I have ever read on this topic. While most of
you are aware of his thoughts on this topic, I have included his statement in this issue of El Clarin for all
of you to read and reflect on:
"Anyone who does any kind of missionary work will have occasion to ask, Why is this so hard? Why
cant our success be more rapid? Why arent there more people joining the Church? Why isnt the
only risk in missionary work that of pneumonia from being soaking wet all day and all night in the
baptismal font? I have thought about this a great deal. I offer this as my personal feeling. I am
convinced that missionary work is not easy because salvation is not a cheap experience. Salvation
never was easy. We are The Church of Jesus Christ, this is the truth, and He is our Great Eternal Head.
How could we believe it would be easy for us when it was never, ever easy for Him? It seems to me
that missionaries and mission leaders have to spend at least a few moments in Gethsemane.
Missionaries and mission leaders have to take at least a step or two toward the summit of Calvary.
Now, please dont misunderstand. Im not talking about anything anywhere near what Christ
experienced. That would be presumptuous and sacrilegious. But I believe that missionaries and
investigators, to come to the truth, to come to salvation, to know something of this price that has
been paid, will have to pay a token of that same price...
When you struggle, when you are rejected, when you are spit upon and cast out, you are standing
with the best life this world has ever known, the only pure and perfect life ever lived. You have reason
to stand tall and be grateful that the Living Son of the Living God knows all about your sorrows and
afflictions. The only way to salvation is through Gethsemane and on to Calvary. The only way to
eternity is through Himthe Way, the Truth, and the Life."
I have never heard it explained any better. May all of you take heart and rejoice in your privilege to
be a missionary. When the going gets tough (as it often does), read this statement again and remind
yourself of why missionary work is so hard. I love this great work and I love working with you
dedicated and committed missionaries. May God bless you to be strong and positive even during
the hard times.
Gentleness is showing consideration and personal concern for others. It is supporting others during
difficult times so they can achieve their full potential. It is often demonstrated in our response to
others. A person who speaks with love, responds with a soft answer and patiently encourages and
nurtures others is demonstrating gentleness.
Paul describes his love for and care for those he brought to Christ in this way, "We were gentle
among you, even as a nurse cherisheth her children." 1 Thessalonians 2:7. As missionaries, we have
the opportunity to work with others who are struggling, downhearted, and troubled. We can look
past the harshness of a face, a waving finger and remind ourselves that each person has a
delicate spirit on the inside. Very often the harshness, rudeness or meanness of a person is a shield
to protect the pain one feels within. As a mother, I often found that a misbehaving child was one
that was upset within. I would need to look beyond the behavior of the child to see the deeper
meaning behind the behavior. We have the opportunity to listen to others concerns, to be
compassionate and to share the message of hope through the Gospel. As we listen to others with
love and gently comfort and serve we can bring them closer to the Savior.
In the scriptures, the Savior describes himself as the good shepherd. The life and health of sheep
depend on the gentleness of the shepherd. in John 10:11 we read, "I am the good shepherd: the
good shepherd giveth his life for the sheep." All through the scriptures we see the Savior loving,
serving, lifting and strengthening others. I love how the Savior invites others to, "Come unto me, all
ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn of
me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest in your souls." Matthew 11:28-29. The
Savior lovingly demonstrates gentleness to ALL inviting each person to come to Him and through
His words in the scriptures and the Holy Ghost we find comfort.
We can learn gentleness by paying attention to the way we feel when others are gentle with us.
Gentleness cannot be evaluated by the person giving it only by the one who receives it. In my
home growing up, I was blessed to have a very gentle, nurturing mother. At the end of my fifth
grade year, our family moved to a new community many miles away. I remember what a difficult
time of transition this was in my life as I left behind my sweet friends and began school trying to find a
new set of friends. I remember coming home from school in my sixth grade year very distraught at times
because of how I was treated by other girls. I would tearfully express my feelings to my loving mother.
She would listen attentively, empathize with me, and then comfort me with loving words, expressing how
much she loved me and admired me. She would build me up so I could face the next day. I remember
many of those days coming home to the sweet fragrance of chocolate chip cookies baking in the
oven. She would sit with me at the table and share warm cookies and milk as I told her about my
day...no wonder I still feel comfort when I eat warm chocolate chip cookies:) I'll forever be grateful to
my mother for her hearing heart, her kindness, love and gentleness.
In Alma 7:23, Alma admonishes his people to be "humble and submissive and gentle, easy to be
entreated; full of patience and long suffering; being temperate in all things; being diligent in keeping
the commandments of God at all times." and in the D&C 121:41 we are reminded that, "No power or
influence can or ought to be maintained by virtue of the priesthood, only by persuasions, by long-
suffering, by gentleness and meekness; and by love unfeigned. David testifies in the scriptures, "...thy
gentleness hath made me great". II Samuel 22:36
We love each of you wonderful missionaries! We are so inspired at the way you have developed your
character here in the mission field. We know that as we continue to strive to become more and more
like the Savior, we feel of the peace He has to offer.
