LESSON PLAN -Topic 3
(Level 1)

LESSON TITLE: At the Post Office


DOMAIN: Economics and Resources

TIME: 2 Hrs.

METHOD: Contextualized interactive communication, culturally embedded content, guided


discussion, application with feedback.

2. Apply knowledge and language skills to real-life settings.

2. Respond to instructions and class activities.

1. Voluntarily participate in class simulation of postal transactions.
2. Willingly go to a local post office to send a package (if applicable) or talk about an
experience at a post office in Russia.

LESSON OUTLINE:

CONTENT ESTIMATED
TIME
INTRODUCTION & REVIEW: 10 minutes
Review homework for todays lesson and discuss any questions; recall
prior learning that is useful to help students acquire the new content;
begin with grabbing the students attention with something interesting yet
relevant to the lessons topic, followed by an explanation of the learning
objectives.
PRESENTATION: 20 minutes
Present key vocabulary of the corresponding semantic field (see
vocabulary list below) by showing students the website of the post office
in TC and asking students to read about the different ways of sending a
letter/package; provide a vocabulary list and then show students a video
clip of people sending a package; show a model dialogue between person
who ask to send/receive package and the post office clerk; share a cultural
note about the system of postage in TC (e.g. if the cost is decided by
weight or by distance, standard vs expedite post office, etc.); students
read about certified mail and discuss the situations in which certified mail
would be used; and/or if applicable, introduce or review a grammatical or
lexical feature that is relevant to the material and likely to occur in the
context of the topic.

GUIDED PRACTICE: 30 minutes


Ask students read a model dialogue between a post office clerk and a
customer who wants to send a letter/package and buy stamps, and practice
the dialogue with different items to send and different services requested;
watch the video and list advantages and disadvantages of different
shipping methods, students read an article about improvement in Russian
post service and answer the comprehension questions; students watch the
video about different shipping methods and answer true/false questions,
then model the situations in which every method would be used; filling in
the blanks by choosing the appropriate expression from a word bank;
students visit the website of the post office and write the list of post
services that they could find; student fill in blank Russian mailing
documents.

BREAK 10 minutes
APPLICATION: 35 minutes
Students share their personal experiences at the post office in Russia;
students role-play sending a certified letter and package; students choose
the shipping method based on the information on the post office website
(e.g. the price, the expected period of time for delivery, insurance, etc.);

FEEDBACK & CONCLUSION: 15 minutes


Students briefly summarize what they have learned in the lesson; identify
need for more work on the lessons topic by asking students for feedback
and address any questions students may have; provide constructive,
positive feedback for students according to their performance in the
assimilation phase; assign homework for next lesson; conclude the lesson
and give a sneak peak of the next lesson.

Read the beginning of very famous Russian fairy-tale and answer true/false questions. Make a
list of all words pertaining to the post services that mentioned in the story.
