Once upon a time in a faraway kingdom, there live a noble King and Queen, who rule
over vast of land where thousands of people reside. King Aragorn and Queen Arwen have a
daughter named Alexandra. She, as the lone heiress, will soon inherit the kingdom Not-So-Far-
Away.
The kingdom is blessed with fertile land, hard-working people, who enjoyed a peaceful
and humane rule from the King and Queen. The harvest from the farm is enough to supply the
food of the entire country. The river in the west does not only provide the people rich catch of
large fishes and plenty of water supply but also a natural barrier from possible attack of enemies.
The southern part of the kingdom is covered with forest land with trees standing as tall as the
fortress in the east. The forest provides the people with huge timbers and wood to build their
houses provide fuel and other various uses. The east and northern part of the kingdom is
enclosed with fortification which does not only show the military strength of the kingdom but
also its wealth due to its intricate design of its gate and abundant supply of the bricks and large
stones which made up the fortress. Living in the kingdom Not-So-Far-Away is close to Utopia, it
all seemed to be perfect. There is peace, happiness, contentment for all the needs of the people is
provided and problems seldom arise.
But the happy, prosperous and contented life of the people in the kingdom is in peril. The
danger is not posed by possible invasion from another kingdom. Instead the threat comes from
within.
One day when the king Aragorn and Queen Arwen traveled to another kingdom for some
important matters to attend to, Princess Alexandra is left alone with servants in the Castle. She is
beautiful with her almond-brown eyes with thick lashes, well-shaped nose and thin pink lips. Her
long black hair sways freely at her back reaching her buttocks. Her skin color is not as white as
her mother but not as brown as her father. Behind the innocent look of her face is something
devil in her personality. She seldom speaks to the people. She snobs their greetings even her
personal servant has some problems with her attitude. She exudes the complete opposite of her
mother who is approachable, soft-spoken and kind-hearted. Alexandra is bossy, spoiled-brat,

conceited, selfish and stubborn girl. She is extravagant without considering the value of the
things she owns or to other people’s things. She has no friends because of her foul attitude.
It was Monday afternoon, while playing with Megeara, Amanda, Tabitha, and Grace,
girls of her age, Alexandra showed ill-mannered action.
“Megeara, I know you are obedient like your mother, would you like to get me a hot
water?” asked Alexandra with a devilish smile in her lips. “It is my pleasure to do what you
command my Princess” a humble reply of Megeara. Then she immediately followed
Alexandra’s bidding. Megeara felt privilege to be chosen by Alexandra over three other girls,
who felt jealous for not having a chance to serve their princess. After sometime, Megeara
returned holding a glass of hot water.
“Here is your water princess Alexandra” said Megeara as she bows in front of Alexandra
and waited for her dismissal and approval. “Raise the arms at the top of your head Megeara”
commanded Alexandra. Then Alexandra stood up in the nearby chair and push Megeara’s hand
that the water from the glass spilled over the latter’s head. Megeara cried for the water was hot
and it burned her head and wet her entire face. “Foolish girl, good for you” muttered Alexandra
as she went away and her laughter echoed the whole palace. It took sometime before the servants
knew what happened for the three other girls were shocked to react immediately.
It was another day; Alexandra had her morning ritual to tour around the kingdom.
Alexandra seldom gets out of her carriage throughout the trip. Though she doesn’t want to do it,
she has no choice. She doesn’t want her mother to get angry with her, that the queen might refuse
to grant her whims and caprices. But while she was passing along the playground for children,
her attention was caught be a wooden puppet played by a little boy.
“Captain Kakashi, stop the carriage, I want to go out!”, commanded Alexandra.
“Are you sure Princess? You never go out of the carriage during your trip, why a sudden
change of mood? asked the Captain Kakashi.
“I wanted to look into that wooden puppet of that little boy, I don’t have something like
that at the castle” replied Alexandra.
As Alexandra approached the playground, the children playing wore different
expressions on their faces. Some are amazed of her striking dress, especially the little girls. The
boys are star-struck by her attractive looks. Some who knows what she did to Megeara looked
her indignantly, while others were surprised to see Megeara in children’s playground, which
happened for the first time.
Alexandra approached the boy holding the wooden puppet and said. “Hey! Little boy, I
want that thing you’re holding give that to me!”
The little boy was shocked for a minute. But after recognizing the princess in front of
him, he immediately bowed and showed respect to Alexandra.
“My… my Princess, I… I … would be honored for such attention from you, but… but…
I’m afraid I can’t give to you my only toy. My father personally made this wooden puppet.
This…this …. is the only toy I ever had” responded the little boy with little confidence and fear.
“I don’t care. I want that toy. Tell your father to make another one for you” she replied.
As she said that, she grabbed the wooden puppet and forcefully pulls it out from the little boy’s
hands. The little boy resisted with his own force. Before Alexandra was able to successfully get
it…crack… crack… crack…the toy breaks into pieces to its brittleness.
“My toy! It is broken” cried the little boy.

“Oh!... now it’s useless. I don’t want it anymore. It is not my fault you refuse to give it to me” As
she said that words, Alexandra turned around and go to her carriage with showing remorse to
what she did.
Tears came four from the little boy’s eyes and one by one he picks up the broken pieces
of his wooden puppet.
“It is ok Acheron, we’ll ask your father to repair it or make a new wooden puppet for
you” said Kyrian, another boy in the playground.
“This toy is very special for me. Father could no longer make another one for me” he
replied
“Why? asked Kyrian.
“Father died before I was born, and this is my only remembrance of him” Acheron
replied while he cried.
“I’m sorry about your father Acheron. Nevertheless, stop crying. My father is a carpenter,
he can make you a good wooden puppet in replacement for your broken one if you like” Kyrian
consoled Acheron.
“Really? Thank you Kyrian! exclaimed Acheron.
“If you want Acheron, you can play with us with some other boys while Kyrian’s father
is making your wooden puppet. How do you like that? suggested one of the boys in the
playground.
“Sounds great to me! Thank you friends”. Acheron replied with glee.

The next morning Alexandra leisurely walks in the garden, full of tulips, star gazers,
roses and other species of beautiful flowers. As she chases a beautiful butterfly, she didn’t notice
a pale of water sprinklers and buckets of animals’ manure on her way. As a result she slides and
her dress was coated with mud mixed with fertilizer.
“Oh no! Ouch! My butt, it aches! Oh the smell is awful. What is this brown, sticky and
yuck! Oh gross, this is filthy. Who put this stupid thing on my way? Apollymi! Where are you?
Come over here! yelled Alexandra calling for her personal maid. But no Apollymi to rescue her.
Instead, “Oh miss let me help you up!” said a voice of a man she presumed to be her knight in
shining armor. When she looked up, there was a tall boy, whom she saw for the first time. She
estimated his age to be three to four years older than her. He is handsome but what she notices is
that he is wearing a dress like a pauper. She immediately becomes disappointed and without even
saying thank you she shouted him. “Who are you? Why are you here in my garden? she asked
him.
“I’m Legolas, my princess, and I did not intentionally put those buckets of animals’
manure to cause you such misfortune. I was trying to help your gardener. I’m really sorry”. He
introduced himself while explaining the things to her.
“So you are responsible for my accident! You careless pauper, I don’t care who you are.
You are going to pay for this. Oh my God, my favorite dress is ruined. And what did you say is
this brownish, sticky mud in my face? Animal’s manure?
“I’m not who do you think I am. I’m not a paupe… I’m the prin…Oh never my. I’m
sorry princess. I’ll just pay the cost of your damage dress” he apologized.
I don’t want the payment. I want you out of my castle and take the gardener with you,
whom you try to help. Tell him it is partly his fault to have a helper who is as incompetent as
you. He will never have his work again.” With those words, Alexandra left Prince Legolas
without giving him a chance to plead for the unfortunate gardener who lost his job.

 The moment when the king and queen returned has arrived. “Ladies and Gentlemen let us
welcome the arrival of our beloved King Aragorn and Queen Arwen” the announcer broadcast
the news with glee and excitement. Alexandra was standing at the main door, waiting with her
pouting lips which seemed bored and indifferent.
“Alexandra, come here, I miss my child. Why do you look so sad? Are you not happy to
see us? Come here I have brought something for you” said Queen Arwen. From her back she
manifested a beautiful box glittered with precious stones. The box lightened the face of
Alexandra and she was happy for her gift. “Open it sweetheart, I know you would like it” said
Queen Arwen with enthusiasm.
When Alexandra opened the box, she saw candies, lots of it with different colors and
flavors. “I hope you would share it with your playmates Alexandra, the Princess from our
neighboring kingdom gave that to you as her present for your upcoming birthday” explained the
queen. With out response or even a sign of gratitude she ignored her mother and father, walked
to her room and kept the candies for herself.
It was dark outside; the clouds are thick signifying the likelihood of having a rain.
Alexandra is sleeping on her bed. She heard a knock on the door of her room. She wakes up but
ignores and pretends to be asleep. She closes her eyes and covers her ears with her fingers so that
she could no longer hear the knock. Yet the knock persists. She asked “who is there? Don’t you
know that your Princess is already resting? But there was no answer from someone knocking at
her door. She got up and when she opened the door, she saw a very old and thin woman. “Please
my child, give me something to eat I am very hungry, I have come from a very far place.
Alexandra looked her intruder with indignation and shouted “Get out you filthy, ugly, old
woman. I neither know you nor care about you! Don’t you know that you disturb my rest? “I’m
sorry my child if I have caused you trouble, but I am begging you… please help me, I’m really
hungry and thirsty” the old woman pleaded. “Are you deaf? Didn’t you hear what I said? I don’t
care if you die, just get out of my sight, and ask other people for help not me” Alexandra told the
old woman and she bangs the doors.
From the image of a grumpy and sickly-looking body the old woman transformed into a
beautiful lady with a wand in her hand. “You are such an arrogant, bad child Alexandra. You
need to learn your lesson. With that kind of attitude, you don’t deserve to be the heir of the
Kingdom Not-So-Far-Away. I hope it is not yet too late to change your unacceptable manner”.
The old-lady-turned-beautiful-lady has something in mind to remedy the impending peril for the
people of the kingdom before it is too late.
“Huh, good for that old woman, anyway she might be deaf not to be affected by the
bang…” Alexandra commented. Before she could return to her bed, the door opens.
“Who opens my…” before Alexandra could finish her sentence, she was surprise and
amaze to see the beautiful lady who started to walk toward her. “Who are you?” asked
Alexandra.
“I am Lady Galadriel, the fairy who guards and protects the Kingdom-Not-So-Far-Away
from her enemies” replied the fairy.
“But why are you here, I am not an enemy of my own kingdom. Soon I will be the Queen
of Kingdom-Not-So-Far-Away”.
“It is exactly, why I am here. I am going to teach you something for you to be worthy of
the crown. And if you cooperate with me, you will have something which you don’t have right
now” explained the fairy.

 “I don’t understand. Who are you to teach me how-to-be-queen? I have personal tutors
for my Classic literature, Language, History, Conduct of a Lady with posture and grace, even
Music. And what could you give me which I don’t have? Isn’t it obvious that as a princess I have
everything” said Alexandra
“You’re mistaken my dear Princess. You are blinded by too much pride, and selfishness.
You don’t have friends, or even playmates. You are like a daughter of a devil than an angel like
your mother.
“I’m the princess; I don’t need friends and I have a heart. If I don’t have now, I’m
probably dead” Alexandra sarcastically replied.
The fairy holding her wand manifested a life size mirror in front of Alexandra. “This is
the mirror of truth. Look at your self in it and tell me what you see” the fairy said.
“This is stupid. Why should I do that? Ok, I just see my own reflection. This mirror is no
different from my personal mirror”. replied Alexandra.
“Ok, look at me and compare it with your own reflection. What do you see? asked the
fairy
“I don’t see any difference… It’s just you are more beautiful than I am with your blond
hair and your colorful dress and your wings”
“Oh dear, you are looking at the outside appearance. Look closely into the inner part”
told the fairy
As Alexandra looks into the mirror very closely, she noticed something in the reflection
of the fairy.
“I saw something in your reflection which I don’t have in mine. It is red and it’s beating.
It is at the upper left portion of your breast. “It’s like a… I don’t know what it is” and why do
you have something like that which I don’t have? asked Alexandra.
“That what you call a heart my dear princess”.
Alexandra put her hand in her breast and feels if she has the heart which the fairy is
telling her she don’t have.
To her surprise, she doesn’t feel her own heartbeat. She seemed to have no heart at all.
“Am I dead? If I’m alive, I want my heart. Give it back to me”. cried Alexandra.
“I don’t have your heart Alexandra. Your own selfishness had consumed it. If you want, you can
bring it back. All you have to do is to think back to those wrongdoings you have done and make
amends for it. Remember those people whose feelings you’ve hurt.” the fairy replied.
“What shall I do? Say sorry? I won’t do that. That is demeaning of me as a princess. I
will not bow down to them.” said Alexandra full of pride.
“You are too hard-headed Alexandra. You carry too much pride in your self which leaves
me no choice but to show you this. Come and see for yourself Alexandra.”
Alexandra stood up in front of the mirror and in one instant, her surroundings changed.
“Where am I? What is this place? Why are there many people who are lying on road?
They are so thin and almost wear rags as clothes. Ouch, what is this that bites my feet? Oh, filthy
rat? Why are there rats here? Alexandra asked without pause.
“Alexandra you are in the center of your Kingdom-Not-So-Far-Away. And these people
are your countrymen twenty years from now. Look at them. They are hungry and thirsty. They
don’t have houses to reside not even clothes or slippers to wear. These are the things that will
happen to your kingdom during your reign” the Fairy explained.

 “Why? What happened? This can’t be happening. My kingdom is rich. This is not reality.
This won’t happen. I don’t want to live with these people they are so unacceptable” Alexandra
said while his eyes are closed trying to deny what she sees, smell and hear.
From his left and right, people are begging her food and drink. Some curse her as their
princess. They despised her for causing this too much human pain and downfall of the once
prosperous kingdom.
“You lost your heart long time ago, Alexandra. That is the cause of your failure to rule
the Kingdom-of-Not-So-Far-Away. With the lost of your heart, you also loose your compassion
for your people. Your kind-hearted parents have died, and you were not able to retain their way
of ruling. You are extravagant, spending your wealth as if no tomorrow. You impose many taxes
to your people for your dresses and other caprices. Those who cannot pay the taxes, were forced
to do hard labor. Some revolted to your rule. When the enemies from the neighboring kingdom
new that your people revolted to you, they took advantage and invaded your kingdom. For many
years you become enslaved to the enemies”
“Until a prince with his armies from the neighboring kingdom emancipated you from
your invaders and restored your independence; but your kingdom has never been the same. Your
kingdom is not prosperous anymore”
“What you see now will be the situation in the future Alexandra. So do you want that? Do
something Alexandra before it’s too late. You have three days before your 15th birthday and these
are your only chances to regain your heart and change the future you see of your kingdom” With
those words said, the fairy left Alexandra.
“No! Lady Galadriel come back … please. Don’t leave me here. I’m sorry… I don’t want
this to happen… no please…” Alexandra continued to call and cried for Lady Galadriel to come
back but to no avail. And all things become so dark that nothing could be seen
“Princess Alexandra, wake up. You are having a nightmare. My daughter, open your
eyes” Queen Arwen and Apollymi shake Alexandra’s body to wake her up.
“Mother? You’re alive? Where is father? Where is Lady Galadriel? The pretty woman,
with blond hair and blue eyes, who let me see in the mirror? I need to see her mother.”
“Alexandra, it is alright. You are just having a nightmare. Here is a glass of water drink
it. Relax and tell me what your dream is about. What made you think I’m dead? Your father is
outside talking to the gardener whom you fired while we were away. There is no one here aside
from you, me and Apollymi. There is no Lady Galadriel here inside your room”
“The mirror, mother where is it? asked Alexandra.
“Mirror? What mirror are you talking about Alexandra? Queen Arwen asked curiously
and confusedly. Maybe you need to relax first and Apollymi will prepare your bath so that you
could change and see us downstairs. Forget about your dream honey; think about your upcoming
birthday party”.
“My birthday? What day is today mother and when is my birthday?
“Alexandra? What happened to you? Your birthday is three days from now, did you
forget it? Are you sick?, asked Queen Arwen with a worried face. “Apollymi, you take charge of
helping Alexandra fix herself. Aragorn is waiting for me downstairs. Alexandra, I hope you will
overcome the effects of your dream soon”. And Queen Arwen left the room
“Three days? Oh my God.” Alexandra is so troubled that she seems to cry. Apollymi is
uncertain what to do or to react until…
“Apollymi, I know I’ve been cruel to you most especially to your daughter Megeara. I’m
really sorry. I’m grateful to you, despite my mistakes, you still care for me and continued to be

my personal maid. So if you may permit, I wanted Megeara and here friends to attend my
birthday party. Please”. said with utmost humility said those words to Apollymi.
“Princess Alexandra… is that really you? I mean, are you already awake. I think you are
still dreaming. I become very curious about your dream, that made this impact on you. Why a
sudden change of attitude Princess Alexandra? Or is this one of your ploys and dramas Princess?
Please spare me” fear and amusement is felt in Apollymi’s reply.
“I’m wide awake Apollymi and this is not one of my dramatics. This is true. I wanted
Megeara to be one of my princesses-in-waiting. And don’t worry of the dress she and her friends
are wearing. You can choose and get from my wardrobe. That is the least, which I think I can do
to amend the trouble I cause them”
“Thank you Alexandra for the dresses, but I can’t promise that they can attend. I can’t
force Megeara if she doesn’t want to.” Apollymi replied.
“Now help dress so that I can have my routine tour of the kingdom”
“right away my princess”
It would be first time for Alexandra to see the people in her kingdom face to face. For
through out her journey, she seldom goes back to her carriage. Most of the time she walks or
been assisted by her driver and body guard Captain Kakashi.
All the people are surprise for a sudden change in character in attitude of Alexandra. She
seemed friendly to all. When she was in the playground, the children run away from her for fear
that she might get their toys. But Captain Kakashi stops and tells them to gather around.
“Every one good morning. I am neither here to bully any one of you nor get your toys
from you. I’m to make friends to all of you. I know, it is hard to believe. But it is true. I want to
be your friend. As a matter of fact, I wanted to invite all of you in my birthday party three days
from now”
“But we don’t have dress to wear, and a present to give” said one girl of her age.
“You don’t have to bring any present. Just be there and I would even be happy to give
some of my clothes”. she replied
“Really? You will give us some of your clothes?” asked enthusiastically by the girl.
“Can I bring our friend Acheron? asked Kyrian.
“Acheron? is he the boy who owned a puppet, which I… I…” Alexandra couldn’t finish
his sentence for embarrassment.
“Yes princess, it is you who broke his wooden puppet” carry on her unfinished statement
“Yes of course. And may I request all of you to tell him that I am sorry for his toy. I
would be happy to see him during my birthday”. asked Alexandra addressed to all the children in
the playground.
After the long trip, Alexandra felt exhausted yet she felt something strange. She felt
something, something wonderful. She told the Captain that they will do the same routine
tomorrow. Their first stop would be the farmland, where the gardener of the palace would
probably be.
The next day, Alexandra feels so excited to see the people of her kingdom. All the people
around her can’t still believe what they see as a sudden change in personality of Alexandra.
Some may think it is a miracle. Still many are doubtful about the motives of Alexandra. Even the
gardener she fired was surprised to see her when she visited him in the garden to apologize.
In straight two days before her birthday she did what the fairy told her to make amends in
her mistakes. Still the thing is, Alexandra never knew what to expect during her birthday. All she
knew is that after that dream. She became a different person, a different Alexandra.

 Last night before Alexandra’s birthday, in her dream she saw the mirror of truth again. At
first she was convinced that it is really present inside her room. Alexandra was expecting to see
Lady Galadriel. In fact she waited for the appearance of the fairy. But no blond pretty lady in
blue appeared before her. She was alone with the creepy and mysterious mirror. Of course
Alexandra was curious and excited to death to see if she regained her heart. She felt cold,
cowardice enveloped her. She is afraid of her own reflection. She feared to fail. What if she
doesn’t still have her heart back? Will it be her doom? Will the kingdom-of-not-so-far-away be
crumbled into downfall because of her?
She closed her eyes and convinced herself hard that she is just dreaming that tomorrow
will be her birthday. But her feet are pulling her to look into the mirror. She knew she was
already in front of the mirror yet she continue to close her eyes. When she was about to open her
eyes, Apollymi awakens her. She was quite disappointed yet relieved that it was again a dream.
Today is the 15th Birthday of Alexandra the sole heiress to the throne of the Kingdom-
Not-So-Far-Away. All the servants at the castle are busy preparing for the grand affair. Presents
from different kingdoms starts to pile up in her room. She is wondering if all the people she
invited would come in her birthday. What if they won’t come? What will she feel? Mixed
emotions engulfed Alexandra. Then her thoughts were interrupted when.
“Alexandra my dear, did you invite someone to be your escort tonight? I haven’t time to
ask that to you yesterday.” asked Queen Arwen.
“Ummm, I think so mother”she replied though she was not sure if he would come. She
was thinking of Legolas, the assistant of the gardener. She wasn’t able to personally invite him
but she asked the gardener to tell Legolas about it. She just crossed her fingers for it.
Long hours of waiting are over. It was almost eight in the evening, and the party is about
to begin. But aside from the King and Queen, Apollymi, and the servants in the castle waiting for
the guests, no one has arrived yet. The heart beat of Alexandra is beating so fast. That she thinks
she might faint. Why? What is the meaning of these? This is not happening. Even the Queen and
the King are worried and confused why no one has answered their invitation.
“This is a sign of disrespect for us especially to our daughter Alexandra” said King
Aragorn furiously. He is mad for those whom he send invitations for not coming to the birthday
of his daughter.
Then he went to Alexandra and said. “My dear daughter, it will be ok. your guests will
arrive soon. Let’s just wait a little longer.” the king consoled her daughter who is close to crying.
Indeed, Alexandra is depressed. She realized, no one seemed to care and love her aside
from her mother and father. The servants in the castle are here simply because it is there job.
Even Appollymi had nothing to do when Megeara decided not to attend. She felt alone. It is the
first time that Alexandra felt the emptiness, the sadness. Yes, her room might be filled with
presents, but all those are useless. She is alone. What will happen to her if her parents die? Who
will be there for her? No one, except herself. Then she remembered her dream, the downfall of
her kingdom and the indignation of her people for her. She was being cursed, because she has
shown no compassion to them. She never had a bond with the people in the kingdom. Then in an
instant she realized what to do
“Father, Mother, if the people of the Kingdom will not come to my birthday, I, will go to
them” exclaimed Alexandra with a bit of excitement in her voice. Can we ask the servants of the
castle to deliver the food in each house of the people? Or could we hold the party at the center of
the kingdom, where we have our entertainment? Please father, mother I don’t want to celebrate

my birthday alone. And let my gifts be distributed to all the children in the kingdom. Can we do
that? she said that to her surprised father and mother.
“Of course we can Alexandra. I’m just wondering what happened to you lately honey? I
mean I love to see the change in you but what cause it? asked Queen Arwen.
Alexandra just smiled. She went to her room to get the box of candies her mother brought
her from another kingdom. It is the most special gift she wanted to give to Acheron, the little boy
she bullied last time. At the back of her mind, she wanted to see Legolas to apologize and offer
her friendship personally.
Before she was about to get out from her room, she noticed a big box, which she just
noticed. “Mother? Alexandra called Queen Arwen. “What is it Alexandra?, Queen Arwen replied
as she rushed to Alexandra’s room. “It is one of my gifts? pointing to the big and tall box in front
of her. “Oh, darling I forgot, that was another gift I brought from another Kingdom, together
with the box of candies I gave you” Queen Galadriel, my friend from the Kingdom we visited
gave that to you as her present.
“Queen …. Ga… Galadriel? did I hear it right mother? asked Alexandra with excitement
and fear in her voice.
“Yes, darling. Now let’s open this, for this is too big to give to your friends, many
servants is needed to carry this one up here in your room” said Queen Galadriel as they opened
the box.
When they opened the box, Queen Arwen was amazed on what she sees. It was beautiful,
silver life-size mirror with glitters of precious stones in the outline of the edges. But that did not
caught Alexandra’s attention. She was looking at the same mirror she saw in her dreams. And
what a coincidence in the names of Lady Galadriel and Queen Galadriel. It is the mirror of truth.
Now as she stands in the mirror with her mother, she saw the bright red beating at the top of her
