Fall 2017
Objective: SWBAT demonstrate understanding of the characteristic and
expressive features of visual arts through analysing a Master artists life work and
creating a work inspired by their chosen artist (Standard 1.1, 1.2, 2.2, 3.2, 4.1)
Overview: This is your opportunity to learn from a Master Artist! Research an artist of your
choice consider mediums (art material), style/period, and subject matter. Choose an artist
that you admire and feel that you could learn a lot from studying them. You will do a well-
researched presentation about the artists biography, influences and style. Then, you will create
a piece based on the artists work. Your piece can be a direct replica using the same materials
as the artist, reinterpret your chosen artists work in a different medium, imitate the artists
style on your own subject, or recreate the artwork in your own style.
Purpose: We as artists can grow a lot from studying masters artwork. It helps hone skills such
as observation, detail, and focus. It gets us into a good mindset to explore subjects and styles in
a safe space because it is not our direct idea, so we can better develop our skills by pushing
ourselves to match a master. However, you must ALWAYS keep in mind that this is a jumping
off point- being able to replicate someone elses artwork does NOT make you an artist! Art
requires originality, interpretation, and a deeper part of our brain being CREATIVE through
problem solving. You still will develop so much from doing this, so it is a great exercise in order
to expand your way of thinking.
