PART-B (5x13=65)

11.a) A material is subjected to two mutually perpendicular direct stresses of 80 MPa tensile and 50
MPa compressive together with a shear stress of 30 MPa. The shear couple acting on planes carrying the 80
MPa stress is clockwise in effect. Find i) Principal stresses ii) the maximum shear stress iii) the normal
stress on the plane of maximum shear iv) the stresses on a plane at 200 counterclockwise to the pane on
which the 50 MPa stress acts.
(or)
11.b)At a point in a strained material there is a horizontal tensile stress of 100 N/mm2 and an unknown
vertical stress. There is also a shear stress of 30 N/mm2 on these planes on a plane inclined at 300
to the vertical, the normal stress is found to be 90 N/mm2 tensile.
Find the unknown vertical stress and also the principal stress and maximum shear stress.

12.a)The principal stresses at a point across two perpendicular planes are 75 MN/mm2 tensile and
35 MN/mm2 compressive. Find normal, tangential stresses and resultant stress and its
obliquity on a plane at 200 with major principal plane.
(or)

12.b)A steel shaft is required to transmit 75KW power at 100 rpm and the maximum twisting moment is 30%
greater than mean. Find the diameter of the steel shaft is the maximum stress is 70 N/mm2.
Also determine the angle of twist in a length of 3m of the shaft.
Assume the modulus of rigidity for steel as 90 KN/mm2.

13.a)A hollow steel shell of 100mm internal diameter and 150m external diameter is to the replaced by a solid
alloy shell. If the polar modulus has the same value for both calculate the diameter of the latter and ratio of
their torsional rigidities.
(or)
13.b) Derive an equation of Torsion
14.a)A bar of cross section 8mm X 8mm is subjected to an axial pull of 7000N. The lateral dimension of the
bar is found to be changed to 7.9985mm x 7.9985mm. If the modulus of rigidity of the materials is 0.8 X
105 N/mm2. Determine the possions ratio and modulus of elasticity.
(or)
14.b)A steel bar 400mm long 60mm wide and 15mm thick subjected to an axial tension of 100 KN.
Calculate the final dimension and change is volume of bar. E = 2 x 105 N/mm2, 1/m = 0.3.

15.a)A metallic bar 300mm X 100mm X 40mm is subjected to a force of 5KN (tensile), 6KN(tensile and
4 KN(tensile) along x,y and z direction respectively. Determine the change in volume of the block. E =
2 x 105 N/mm2, 1/m = 0.25
(or)

15.b)A cylindrical shell 3m long 1m internal diameter and 15mm metal thickness. Calculate the
circumferential and longitudinal stress induced and also change in the dimensions of the shell, if it is
subjected to a internal pressure of 15 Kg/cm2; E = 2 x 106 Kg/cm2, = 0.3

PART-C (1x16=16)
16.a)Two vertical rods one of steel and other of copper are each rigidly fixed at the top
and 600mm apart. Diameters and lengths of the rods are 25mm and the 5m respectively.
A cross bar fixed to the rods at the lower end carries a load of 7 KN such that the cross
bar remains horizontal even after loading. Find the stresses in each rod and the position
of the load on the cross bar. Assume the modulus of elasticity for steel and copper 200
KN/mm2 and 100 KN/mm2.
(or)
b) A solid circular bar of diameter 20mm which is subjected to an axial tensile load
of 40 KN the reduction in diameter of the rod was observed as 6.4 x 10-3mm. The bulk
modulus of the material of the bar is 67 GPa. Determine i) youngs modulus ii)
Poissons ratio iii) modulus of rigidity iv) change is length/meter length iv) change is
volume of the bar/meter length.
