Os vrios tipos de aos utilizados na industria da construo mecnica podem ser classificados com o sistema de codificao SAE/AISI que usa em geral quatro algarismos na forma ABXX onde:
A e B - nmeros que identificam os principais elementos de liga presentes no ao e seus teores dados em porcentagem de peso.
XX - indicam a porcentagem em peso de carbono do ao multiplicado por 100.
Isso significa dizer que um ao identificado como 1045 contm 0,45 % em peso de carbono em sua composio qumica.
Quando a letra B aparece entre os dois primeiros nmeros e os dois ltimos indica que o ao tem um teor de boro no mnimo 0,0005% em peso (o boro, quanto presente no ao em teores
muito baixos, facilita a tmpera do ao, aumentando a sua resistncia).
Quando o teor de carbono excede 1% o sistema admite a utilizao de cinco algarismos. O ao prata, utilizado principalmente na fabricao de anis, esferas e roletes de rolamentos, pois
apresenta uma dureza elevada, codificado como 52100 o que corresponde a, 1,5% Cr e 1% de carbono.
