Systems Mr. Pezzuto Susan B. Anthony Middle School Lesson Goals
SWBAT identify and describe
the roles of each component of a communication system.
SWBAT analyze the connection
between waves/wave interactions and communication systems. DO NOW Review: What is a System and name 3 types of systems that we have discussed this year. Below is a picture of a wave. Please answer the following questions based on what your remember from 6th grade science. What is a wave? What type of wave is this? Name the 4 types of wave interactions. Label the parts of a wave below. Review of Waves Waves are the way in which energy is transferred from place to place. Types of Waves include: Electromagnetic Waves (radio, micro, infrared, etc.) Electrical Waves Light Waves Mechanical Waves (ocean) Wave-cabulary Crest: the highest part of a wave Trough: the lowest part of a wave Wavelength: the space between 2 crests (peaks) or troughs Amplitude: the energy put into a wave. Its measured from the baseline to the top of crest/trough Introduction to Communication Systems Radio Communication Example Vocabulary Preview Spanish Portuguese Arabic
Encoder The encoder takes the signal and converts it into a code. Ex. There is a device in your cell phone that takes your voice, or text you input into a code. Transmitter
The transmitter takes the code from the encoder and
sends it out. Transmitter usually have a large antenna and can send out signals for radio, television and other telecommunications Ex. You phone is a transmitter as well because it sends the signal to the cell tower. The cell tower is also a transmitter because a signal from it to its destination. Receiver
The receiver takes in the signal transmitted by the
transmitter.
Ex. The cellular tower that is closest to the person
youre calling will receive the signal from your phone. Decoder A device that changes the incoming message (signal) into useful information such as sound, or the text that was sent. The decoder does the opposite job as the encoder. Ex. Your phone when receiving a message uses its decoder to turn the radio signal back into sound and words. Destination
The final output of the communications signal/message.
Ex. This would be the cellphone of the person you are
calling. Storage
The storage subsystem keeps the messages/ signals that were
sent.
Ex. internal memory, cloud storage of a cell phone
Retrieval
The process of accessing stored data.
Ex. you would use functions on your phone to access the
stored data. Ticket to Leave Identify and describe which part of a communication system is shown in the pictures below.
