Ulverston
International
Music
Festival
8 - 19 June
Welcome
It gives me great pleasure to announce our programme for UIMF 2016. I hope you'll agree
that we have put together a fabulous feast of music over the course of ten days.

The Festival opener heralds the welcome return of English Touring Opera to the
Coronation Hall. Songs of a very different nature follow hot on its heels with mesmerising
vocalist Julia Biel, and the vocal theme continues, first with a barbershop quartet
courtesy of the multi award-winning Reckless, and then with our choral concert 'The
Rio Grande'. A quartet of the stringed variety (Navarra String Quartet) ushers in two
concerts at the historic Swarthmoor Hall, and the opening weekend ends on a high with
Ulverstons very own star saxophonist, Jess Gillam.

We are very fortunate that TV celebrity Alistair McGowan - a keen pianist - brings his
brand new production on the life of eccentric French composer Erik Satie, in the 150th
anniversary of the composer's birth. This year's Celebrity Recitalist Jennifer Pike is also
well known to TV viewers as the youngest ever BBC Young Musician of the Year.

An important aspect of each Festival is fostering emerging artists: young virtuoso

Russian pianist Alexander Panfilov performs in our 'Rising Star' concert; our 'Family
Concert' has a culinary twist with Bake a Musical Cake'; talented young soprano
Raphaela Papadakis has put together a beautiful and diverse range of songs inspired
by familiar Shakespearean characters in 'Shakespeare in Song', and the Haffner
Orchestra pay further homage to the nation's favourite bard in a programme of popular
works accompanied by extracts from the relevant plays, read by local school-children.

I'm thrilled to be performing Brahms's monumental Piano Concerto no. 1, after being
forced to withdraw last year due to injury. Back by popular demand, the Festival reaches
its grand climax with ENTango. However, before we sign off for another year, do come
along on Sunday June 19 for a special day of participation and music-making by talented
amateurs - all in aid of St. Mary's Hospice. The icing on the cake is a special appearance
by Jess Gillam in the final concert of the Festival.

We hope you'll find plenty in our programme to whet your appetite. One thing is for sure:
when the fat lady sings, the Festival will only have just begun!

Mozarts Don Giovanni is one of the best-loved of all operas, with a dramatic story
and ravishing music. Part thriller, part dark comedy, its the provocative tale of a
womaniser whose conquests come back to haunt him.

The Royal Northern Sinfonia has built a distinctive reputation as a fresh-thinking and

of the leading chamber orchestras in the country, this is the orchestral highlight of the
Festival.

Christopher Warren-Green conducts Schumanns third symphony, Rhenish, a work

which was inspired by Schumanns visit to the Rhineland. Although not intended as a
programmatic composition, the second movement is a musical depiction of the
flowing River Rhine, and the symphony as a whole is modelled on Beethovens
'Pastoral'.

The Festivals Artistic Director, Anthony Hewitt, joins the orchestra as soloist for
Johannes Brahms Piano Concerto no. 1. Recognised as one of Brahms greatest
compositional triumphs, his first piano concerto combines virtuoso passage-work
with rich orchestral textures, and is one of the leading works of the piano concerto
repertoire.

Formed at the Festival in 2012, ENTango offer a new take on the relationship between
musicians and dancers, in that they intermingle and become ENTangled on stage. The
intimacy and powerful energy of chamber music fuses with the passion and sensuality
of Tango. Rather than being incidental to the dance, the trio of musicians are placed
in the centre of the visual action, and the dancers weave their steps around them and
touch shoulder to shoulder amidst the moving sound waves.

The spiritual core of ENTango is Argentinian bandoneonist Eduardo Garcia who writes
