Storage: After drying, the electrodes shall be stored continuously in a SAES-W-017,
B2
holding oven at 120C minimum. Attachment 1
On removal from drying or storage oven, or hermetically sealed SAES-W-017,
B3
containers, electrodes are only exposed to atmosphere for 4 hrs. Attachment 1
Exposure is extended to 8 hours if electrodes are continuously stored in SAES-W-017,
B4
a portable electrode oven heated to 65C minimum. Attachment 1
Electrodes exposed to atmosphere > permitted time period, shall be re- SAES-W-017,
B5
dried. Wet or moist Electrodes shall not be used. break/discard Attachment 1
Re-conditioning: Electrodes exposed to atmosphere for < the permitted
time period, may be returned to a holding oven maintained at 120C SAES-W-017,
B6
minimum. After a minimum holding period of four hours at 120C Attachment 1
minimum, the electrodes may be reissued.

C Low Hydrogen Electrodes to A5.5:

Prior to use all electrodes are dried at 370-430C for 2 hrs. min. N/a for
E70xx and E80xx if supplied in a hermetically sealed metal can, with a SAES-W-017,
C1
positive indication of seal integrity, or vacuum sealed package. NOTE: Attachment 1
Electrodes may be redried only once.
Storage: After drying, the electrodes shall be stored continuously in SAES-W-017,
C2
ovens at 120C minimum. Attachment 1
Upon removal from drying / storage oven / hermetically sealed cans, no
exposure to atmosphere > 2 hrs, for E70xx or E80xx electrodes
NOTE: No exposure > 30 minutes for any higher strength electrode. SAES-W-017,
C3
Attachment 1
Exposure 4 hrs. & 1 hr. respectively is permitted, if continuously
stored in portable electrode oven heated to 65C minimum.
E70xx and E80xx electrodes exposed to atmosphere for < permitted time
SAES-W-017,
C4 period, shall be re-conditioned. E70xx and E80xx electrodes exposed >
Attachment 1
permitted time period, shall be re-dried.
Higher strength electrodes > E80xx are re-dried after any length of
SAES-W-017,
C5 atmospheric exposure. Wet or moist electrodes shall not used.
Attachment 1
Break/discard wet or moist electrodes on the spot to prevent reuse.
E70xx and E80xx electrodes exposed to the atmosphere < the permitted
time period, shall be returned to a holding oven maintained at 120C SAES-W-017,
C6
minimum; after a minimum holding period of 4 hours at 120C minimum, Attachment 1
the electrodes may be reissued.

D Stainless Steel and Non-Ferrous Electrodes:
Prior to use all electrodes shall be dried at 120-250C for 2 hrs. min. N/a
for electrodes supplied in a hermetically sealed metal can, with a positive SAES-W-017,
D1
indication of seal integrity, or vacuum sealed package. Attachment 1
NOTE: Electrodes may be re-dried only once.

After drying, the electrodes shall be stored continuously in ovens at 120- SAES-W-017,
D2
200C minimum. Attachment 1

Once removed from drying / storage oven / hermetically sealed cans,

atmospheric exposure is limited to 4 hours. Atmospheric exposure 8 SAES-W-017,
D3
hours is allowed when Electrodes are continuously stored in portable Attachment 1
ovens heated to 65C minimum.
When atmospheric exposure is < permitted time period, electrodes are re-
SAES-W-017,
D4 conditioned. Electrodes exposed > permitted time period are re-dried.
Attachment 1
Wet or moist Electrodes shall not be used. Break/discard.

Electrodes exposed < permitted time period are returned to holding

SAES-W-017,
D5 ovens at 120C minimum; after a holding period 4 hours at 120C
Attachment 1
minimum, the electrodes may be reissued.
E Non-Low Hydrogen Electrodes to A5.1 or A5.5:
Electrodes shall be stored in a dry environment. Any electrodes that have SAES-W-017,
E1
become moist or wet shall not be used. Break/discard. Attachment 1

Storage and rebake ovens shall have a calibrated temperature gauge to SAES-W-017,
E2
continuously monitor the temperature. Attachment 1
Portable electrode storage ovens with a minimum temperature of 120C
are considered equivalent to storage ovens. Proper use of the oven (e.g., SAES-W-017,
E3
closed lid, continuously on while in use) and periodic checks of Attachment 1
temperature achieved with each portable oven are reqd.
Some applications may require higher drying temperatures and shorter SAES-W-017,
E4
atmospheric exposure times. Attachment 1

Electrode types are listed in accordance with ASME SEC II C. SAES-W-017,

E5
See Attachment 1. Attachment 1
F SAW fluxes:
Fluxes for material with a minimum specified tensile strength 70Ksi, are
stored in sealed containers, in a dry environment. SAES-W-017,
F1
NOTE: Opened SAW flux containers are stored continuously in ovens at Attachment 2
(65C minimum or manufacturer's recommendation).

Fluxes for material with minimum specified tensile strength > 70Ksi are,
SAES-W-017,
F2 dried, stored & handled as per manufacturer recommendations, to
Attachment 2
achieve a dissolved H2 content < 8ml H2/100g metal.

Any flux that has become moist or wet shall not be used and shall be SAES-W-017,
F3
discarded. Attachment 2

Active type Submerged Arc Welding fluxes shall not be used without SAES-W-017,
F4
approval. Para. 6.5.1

Flux fused during welding shall not be reused (i.e., fluxes that use SAES-W-017,
F5
recrushed slag are not acceptable). Para. 6.5.2

G SAW, GTAW, GMAW, and FCAW electrodes and wires:

All electrodes and wires shall be stored in sealed containers in a dry

SAES-W-017,
G1 environment. NOTE: Any wires having visible rusting or contamination
Attachment 2
shall not be used, and shall be discarded.
