The Roaring 20s: Creating a Decade Magazine

Introduction: One of the defining aspects of the 1920s was the growing impact of mass media. Developments in
technology allowed most common Americans unprecedented access to information. This was often seen through
popular magazines of the time. Imagine that you are the editor-in-chief of a popular magazine in the 1920s. You
have been tasked with putting together a Decade-in-Review issue of your magazine. In groups, you and your news
team will research the most important events in your particular topic and put together a creative and informative
magazine issue. For ideas and inspiration, you will be provided with a powerpoint, internet resources for research,
and the relevant sections of your textbooks. Any additional research should be run by your teacher.

Directions: To create a successful magazine you must meet the following criteria:

1. Name your magazine with a name that is clever and relevant to your topic.

2. Create a cover with an image that includes your magazine name and a representation of your 1920s topic
and the fact that this is a special End of the Decade issue.
a. Use color and creativity. You will be graded on effort, not artistic ability.

3. Create a Table of Contents with six (6) article titles that discuss the important developments in your topic
during the 1920s. Your Table of Contents should include:
a. Clever, detailed and specific titles (and fake page numbers) so that it is clear what topic is being
discussed.
b. Color and creativity.

4. Choose two (2) of the most interesting / important articles and write them. The written articles should be
one (1) page in length with proper grammar. Your articles can be investigative pieces, informative news
pieces, or even interviews. Articles should provide detailed and creative overviews of the topic. Your
articles should include:
a. The title, matched up with the table of contents.
b. Relevant images that are either drawn or printed.
c. Color and creativity.

5. Between articles, create one (1) advertisement that you would likely see in this magazine.This could
include technology, products, sports, music, movies, literature, and more!
