CHAPTER 4 DISCUSSION QUESTIONS

1. Formularies influence medication use within institutions by providing information on the medications
approved for use, basic therapeutic information about each item, information on medication use
policies and procedures, and special information about medications such as dosing guidelines, etc.

2. Pharmacists take a leadership role in the formulary management for they are the ones more familiar
with drug use and classification.

3. The key elements in successful and efficient operation of a Pharmacy and Therapeutics Committee
are the ongoing formulary maintenance and routine drug use evaluations.

4. Drug Use Guidelines are incorporated into the formulary management process by being the basis for
the safety of medication use. These guidelines may foster the safe, efficacious and cost effective use of
selected drug products.

CHAPTER 5 DISCUSSION QUESTIONS

1. Providing basic information about a medication to a patient at the time of dispensing can be trivial
since the patient will only know about the drug and its dosing schedule because of the limited time of
visit while true counseling of a patient will be able to yield a positive or effective use of medication since
there will be a good provider-patient communication that will give the patient an adequate knowledge
about a drug and its use, its adverse effects, long term drug use, complex use where there are numerous
medications with varying dosing schedules.

2. There hasnt been development of structures to pay pharmacists for these services because the
government is too focused on making the salaries of higher officials like generals, lieutenants, senators
etc. who ensure the countrys safety and economy rather than to allocate a higher salary for those
people whose professions are to ensure the health and wellness of these people serving the country.

3. For the profession to move toward a greater role in clinical practice, the education of future
pharmacists should be improved. Pharmacists should also be acknowledged as patient-care providers
for they also ensure the safety of the patients by giving them a safe medication use. Also, government
should give more attention to the needs of the clinical practice like providing funds for better
equipments and allotting a higher salary for everyone working around the profession.
