I. Inflation in Brief
1. CPI inflation, General, increased by 9.6% on year-on-year basis in July 2012 as compared to 11.3% in
the previous month and 12.4% in July 2011. On month-on-month basis, it decreased by 0.2% in July
2012 as compared to an increase by 0.04% in the previous month and an increase by 1.3% in July
2011.
2. Core inflation measured by non-food non-energy CPI (Core NFNE) increased by 11.3% in July 2012 as
compared to 11.4% in June 2012(YoY) and by 9.5 % in July 2011. Core NFNE inflation on MoM basis
increased by 1.0% in July 2012 as compared to 0.7% a month earlier and 1.2%in July 2011.
3. Core inflation, measured by 20% weighted trimmed mean CPI (Core Trimmed) increased by 10.7% in
July 2012 and by 11.1% in June 2012 (YoY) which increased by 11.9% in July 2011. Core Trimmed
inflation has increased by 0.7% on MoM basis in July 2012 as compared to 0.5% in June 2012 which
increased by 1.1% in July 2011.
4. SPI inflation on YoY basis increased by 7.7% in July 2012 compared with 9.7% a month earlier and
13.1% in July 2011. On MoM basis, it increased by 0.5% in July 2012 as compared to 1.4% a month
earlier and 2.4% in July 2011.
5. WPI inflation on YoY basis increased to 7.2% in July 2012 compared with 6.4% a month earlier and
20.3% in July 2011. WPI inflation on MoM basis increased by 0.4% in July 2012 as compared to a
decrease of 0.05% a month earlier and a decrease of 0.4% in July 2011.
6. Figures 1 and 2 show graphically the data of Table 1. Table 1.1 shows Period Average and YoY
percent changes in indices of three years.

II. Consumer Price Index (CPI)
The Consumer Price Index of July, 2012 has decreased by 0.25% over June, 2012 and increased by 9.60%
over corresponding month of last year.

1. Month-on-month Top few commodities which varied from previous month i.e. June 2012 are given
below:-
Food Items Increased: Onions (20.82%), Tomatoes (16.60%), Chicken (12.14%), Potatoes
(11.85%), Fresh Vegetables (11.31%), Fresh Fruits (5.15%), Cooking Oil (3.86%), Eggs (3.04%),
Milk Powder (2.30%) and Honey (2.05%).
Decreased: Tea (5.05%), Pulse Mash (1.45%), Pulse Masoor (1.23%), Sugar (0.73%), Gram
Whole (0.56%), Fish & Pulse Moong (0.47% each), Wheat Flour (0.43%), Vegetable Ghee (0.39%),
Wheat Products (0.25%) and Beverages (0.16%).
Non-food Items Increased: Doctor (MBBS) Clinic Fee (2.66%), Transport Services (2.56%),
Dopatta (2.25%), Mechanical Service (2.09%), Marriage Hall Charges (1.84%), House Rent
(1.48%), Woolen Cloth (1.41%), Construction Input Items (1.35%) and Cleaning & Laundry
(1.34%).
Decreased: Gas (49.19%), Motor Fuel (8.82%) and Kerosene Oil (3.84%).
2. Year-on-year Top few commodities which varied from previous year i.e. July 2011 are given below:-
Food Items Increased: Onions (50.93%),Pulse Gram (49.95%), Besan (42.97%), Gram Whole
(31.52%), Fresh Fruits (28.01%), Condiments (20.47%), Beans (20.26%), Honey (20.12%),
Cigarettes (18.20%), Milk Powder (17.67%), Chicken (14.59%) and Rice (14.53%).
Decreased: Tomatoes (31.94%), Sugar (21.90%), Gur (15.08%), Pulse Moong (14.15%), Pulse
Mash (12.19%), Potatoes (11.04%), Pulse Masoor (10.13%), Fresh Vegetables (4.14%), Eggs
(0.11%) and Tea (0.96%).
Non-food Items Increased: Text Books (40.60%), Household Servant (35.04%), Motor Vehicle
Tax (28.73%), Doctor (MBBS) Clinic Fee (25.53%), Utensils (23.85%), Firewood Whole (23.81%),
Marriage Hall Charges (20.50%) and Dopatta (20.39%).
Decreased: Gas (34.25%) and Communication & Apparatus (0.07%).
III. Sensitive Price Indicator
Quintile-wise percentage changes YoY and MoM are given below in Table 3. The series from June 2011 to
July 2012 is also graphed below in Figure 3.

IV. Wholesale Price Index
The Wholesale Price Index for July 2012 increased by 0.36% over June 2012. It increased by 7.22% over
the corresponding month of the last year. YoY and MoM movements, from June 2011 to July 2012 are also graphed
below in Figure 4.
