Week 1 Reflection

Hello all,

My name is Cade McNamara and I am a PP&D and Environmental Science double major at the

University of California, Irvine. I like all genres of music because I like to keep it interesting, a

book must be thrilling or heart wrenching to interest me, I am in love with the Netflix series

Narcos, and on the weekends, I typically go out with friends or find something adventurous to

do. I like outdoor activities because I am from a rural, small town called Eureka, here in

California. I grew up hunting, fishing, hiking, and going to the lake a lot with my family. I have a

love for sports and view almost everything as a competition in life. I have some experience with

rhetorical writing from high school and writing 39B, so I am looking to improve upon my

writing skills and research abilities in 39C this quarter. One of my favorite books, though some

might say Im corny for liking it so much, is To Kill a Mockingbird. One thing I hope to take

from Writing 39C to improve upon my writing skills would be finding sources that best reinforce

my arguments. In Writing 39b I learned how to improve my rhetoric and construct a proper,

informed argument. I hope that 39C can help me improve upon my authoritative voice by

helping me develop skills in research to where I can find the concrete evidence to support my

arguments and improve my overall message. By improving my rhetoric, learning new and more

efficient ways of researching, and continuing to improve construction of my writing, I am

confident that 39C will help me in the future working world. Some things I hope to improve

upon would be being able to digest and analyze readings more efficiently, to become a more

articulate writer, and to gain a deeper appreciation for my literary side. In high school, I was

always so focused on math and sciences that I never gave my complete attention to writing, so

Im hoping my skills improve by doing so. I would also like to improve upon my researching

abilities. I would just like to identify the kind of research method that is most effective for me.

Some things I hope to work on are as follows: where to begin, what kind of research am I doing,

and which documents will support my argument best? All of these are questions I hope to find

answers for upon completion of 39C. On another note, I believe that our system needs better

education, emphasis on supporting science, and an overall more humanitarian thought process.

We need to take care of one another and further define what is a right and what is a privilege. I

believe there is a large misunderstanding in the world over what is deserved and what is worked

for. We need a more universal, humanitarian, and retributive point of view to reframe our

society. We need to emphasize education so that our society doesnt regress and that we can

progress in a positive direction for the future. Science is studying what is observed around us. If

you deny scientific observation, what are you really doing? I just want people to have a genuine

care and concern for the health and humanity in our nation. If we do the simple things like care

and observe, we can make better changes. Just a thought.
