Stratasyswasfoundedin1989,byS.ScottCrumpandhiswifeLisaCrumpinEdenPrairie,
Minnesota.TheideaforthetechnologycametoCrumpin1988whenhedecidedtomakeatoy
frogforhisyoungdaughterusingagluegunloadedwithamixtureofpolyethyleneandcandle
wax.Hethoughtofcreatingtheshapelayerbylayerandofawaytoautomatetheprocess.In
April1992,Stratasyssolditsfirstproduct,the3DModeler.[3]

InOctober1994,StratasyshadaninitialpublicofferingonNASDAQthecompanysold1.38
millionsharesofcommonstockat$5pershare,nettingapproximately$5.7million.[4]

InJanuary1995,StratasyspurchasedIBM'srapidprototypingintellectualpropertyandother
assetsandemployed16formerIBMengineers,whohadbeendevelopingasmall3Dprinterthat
reliedonanextrusionsystemverysimilartoCrump's
patentedfuseddepositionmodeling(FDM)technology.[5]

In2003,Stratasysfuseddepositionmodeling(FDM)[6]was
thebestsellingrapidprototypingtechnology.[7]FDMisa
processthatthecompanypatented,whichisusedtoproduce
threedimensionalpartsdirectlyfrom3DCADfileslayerby
layerforuseindesignverification,prototyping,development
andmanufacturing.

In2007,Stratasyssupplied44%ofalladditivefabrication
systemsinstalledworldwide,makingittheunitmarketleaderforthesixthconsecutiveyear.[8]

InJanuary2010,StratasyssignedanagreementwithHPtomanufactureHPbranded3D
printers.[9]InAugust2012,theHPmanufacturinganddistributionagreementwasdiscontinued.

InMay2011,StratasysannouncedthattheyhadacquiredSolidscape,aleaderinhighprecision
3Dprintersforlostwaxcastingapplications.[10]

In2012,anunrelatedprojecttoproduceaworkingfirearmby3Dprintingwasintendedtousea
Stratasysprinter.Stratasysrefusedtopermitthisandwithdrewitslicenseforuseoftheprinter,
citingthatitdidnotallowitsprinters"tobeusedforillegalpurposes".[11][12]

MergerwithObjet

OnApril16,2012,StratasysannouncedthatitagreedtomergewithprivatelyheldObjetLtd.,a
leadingmanufacturerof3DprintersbasedinRehovot,Israel,inanallstocktransaction.
Stratasysshareholderswereexpectedtoown55percentofthecombinedcompany,andObjet
shareholderswouldown45percent.ThemergerwascompletedonDecember3,2012the
marketcapitalizationofthenewcompanywasapproximately$3.0billion.[13]

AcquisitionofMakerBot,SolidConceptsandHarvestTechnologies

OnJune19,2013,MakerBotIndustriesannouncedthatitwaspurchasedbyStratasysfor$403
million.[14]

OnApril2,2014,Stratasysannouncedthattheyhadenteredintodefinitiveagreementsto
OnApril2,2014,Stratasysannouncedthattheyhadenteredintodefinitiveagreementsto
acquireSolidConceptsandHarvestTechnologies,whichwillbecombinedwithRedEye,its
existingdigitalmanufacturingservicebusiness,toestablishasingleadditivemanufacturing
servicesbusinessunit.[15]TheacquisitionwasfinalizedonJuly15,2014.[16]
