I. INTRODUCTION
UWB antennas have gained wide interest because of
their low cost, low power consumption, low interference,
ease for installation in high speed short range Fig. 1. Geometry of tunable diagonally slot EBG
communication systems and high data rate for
communication systems. It operates over the band of 3.1-
10.6 GHz which was licensed by the Federal
communication (US-FCC) in 2002. Very recently
electromagnetic band gap (EBG) structures have been
employed to create notch band at different frequencies. In
[2] two L slot loaded modified mushroom structure has been
designed to create notch in WLAN band. In [3] two spiral
based EBG structures have been placed on the front and
back portion of the substrate to create two band notches in
5.2 and 5.8 GHz respectively. In [4] three EBG structures
have been utilized and optimized to get three band notches Fig. 2. Dispersion diagram of (a) S2 on (b) S1 on.
at 3.4 GHz, 5.2GHz, and 5.8 GHz. In [4] four conventional
mushroom type EBG structure is applied to get the rejection diagram for switch S2 on (edge via is shorted to ground),
band in 5.5 GHz. In [5] combination of CMT EBG and edge The simulated frequency band gap is 4 GHz-5.4GHz (BW
located via-EBG (ELV-EBG) is used. of 29.7% at fr=4.7GHz). Dispersion diagram for Switch S1
on, is shown in fig.2 (b), the simulated band gap is observed
from 6.4 GHz- 8.2GHz (BW of 24.6% at fr =7.2GHz).
II. TUNEABLE EBG DESIGN AND CHARACTERISATION
In this paper a diagonally slotted tunable EBG (DST-
EBG) structure with two via one at center and another at
edge is proposed with diode switches S1 and S2 as shown in
fig 1 to create reconfigurable band notches [6]. When the
diode switch S1 is on, the EBG structure behaves as a
conventional mushroom like EBG. When switch S2 is on it
works like edge located via-EBG. Fig.1 (a) shows the
ground plane of the EBG structure where two square slots of
1 X 1 mm2 are etched to connect the diode switches. The
parameters of EBG unit cell are: relative permeability of the
dielectric substrate (r = 4.5), height of the substrate (h =1
mm), radius of centre via (d = 0.4 mm), radius of edge via (r
= 0.25 mm), width of the patch (W=6.2 mm) and diagonal
slot length (t=1.4mm) and distance between two vias Fig. 3. Sectoral monopole antenna with DS-EBG structure.

dispersion diagram. Fig.2 (a) is the dispersion

III. DUAL POLARISED UWB ANTENNA DESIGN WITH
RECONFIGURABLE NOTCH

A sectoral dual polarized UWB monopole antenna in [7]

is loaded with tunable EBG structure for reconfigurable
band notch. And another diagonal slot EBG structure with
Patch width 4mm and via radius 0.35mm is designed for
band gap around 9GHz is used for fixed band notch at 8.2
GHz. The complete antenna design parameters are listed in
Table I. The simulated VSWR in Fig. 4(a) shows the
VSWR>2 at notch frequencies 4.17 and 8.2 GHz, 5.8 and
8.2GHz and 7 and 8.2 GHz when S2 on, S1 on and both S1
and S2 on respectively. The simulated peak gain (Fig.4 (b))
is less than -1dB at notch frequencies.

of antenna at 3.5, 6.5 and 9.5 GHz. As the monopole antena
is y-polarized E-plane is in YZ-plane and H-plane is in XZ
plane. Here, the cross pol component is approximately equal
to co-pol component .Therefore , the antenna is dual
polarised.

IV. CONCLUSIONS
A dual band notched reconfigurable dual polarized UWB
monopole antenna is proposed. The stop bands have been

electromagnetic band gap structures by changing the via

simulated current distribution at notch frequencies is shown maintaining a compactness and simplicity in the antenna
