5. A circular ice rink is enclosed by a hemispherical dome. The ice and the
dome are at 0 Celsius and 15 Celsius respectively. The rink diameter is 25
m. What is the net radiative heat transfer? The rink has an emissivity of

6. Water at 98 Celsius flows through a steel pipe (ID=0.05m, OD=0.06m) at
a velocity of 0.25 m/s. The horizontal pipe is in contact with atmospheric air
at 20 Celsius, the water and air heat transfer coefficient is 1900 and 7.9

membrane at 25 Celsius. The pressures on the sides of the membrane are
3.5 MPa and 200 kPa. Diffusivity and solubility data are 160x10^-11 m^2/s
and 0.34x10^-4 mol/m^2-Pa respectively. If the hydrogen flux is to 0.64
kmol/m^2-h, how thick should the membrane be?

9. A flat slab of douglas firewood 50.8 mm thick containing 30% wt moisture


is being dried from both sides (neglecting sides and edges). The
equilibrium moisture content at the surface of the wood due to the drying air
blown over it is held at 5% wt moisture. The drying can be assumed to be
represented by a diffusivity of 1.72x10^-6 m^2/h. Calculate the time for the
center to reach 10% wt moisture.

10. Sulfur dioxide is absorbed from air into water in a packed absorption
tower. At a certain location in the tower, the mass flux is 0.027 kmol/h-m^2
and the liquid phase mole fractions are 0.0025 and 0.0003, respectively, at
the two phase interface and in the bulk liquid. The diffusivity of SO2 in
water is 1.7x10^-5 cm^2/s and the total concentration of the solution is
5.55x10^-2 mol/cm^3. Using the film theory, determine the mass transfer
coefficient, kc and the film thickness, neglecting bulk flow effect.

11. Carbon dioxide is absorbed from air in a wetted-wall column (liquid is


H20). The gas stream moves at a velocity of 1 m/s in a 0.05 m diameter
column. Temperature and pressure for the system are 25 Celsius and 1
atm respectively. At a certain location in the column, the carbon dioxide
mole fraction in the gas (bulk phase) is 0.1 The carbon dioxide has a mole
fraction of 0.005 in the water. The Henrys Law constant for the system
C02-H20 is 1.6 x 10^8 N/m^2-mol frac CO2. The diffusivity of CO2 in the
gas is 1.64x10^-5 m^2/s. Calculate the mass transfer rate of CO2.

12. In an experimental study of the absorption of ammonia by water in a


wetted-wall column, the over-all mass transfer coefficient Kg=2.74x10^-9
kgmol/m^2-s-Pa. At one point in the column, the gas phase contained 8 mol
% ammonia and the liquid phase concentration was 0.064 kmol
ammonia/m^3 of solution. The tower operates at 293 K and 1.0315x10^5
Pa. At that temperature, the Henrys Law Constant H=1.358x10^3
Pa/kmol/m^3). If 75% of the total resistance to mass transfer is
encountered in the gas phase, determine the interphase concentrations
and the mass transfer flux.
