T he MPOB International Palm Oil
Congress and Exhibition (PIPOC) is a
biennial event organised by the Malaysian
Palm Oil Board (MPOB). PIPOC will
once again be held at the Kuala Lumpur
Convention Centre (KLCC) which offers a
stimulating environment for conferences
and exhibitions.
PIPOC 2017 is expected to draw more
than 8000 participants and trade visitors
comprising mainly CEOs, directors,
researchers, policy makers, plantation
managers, millers, traders, export personnel
and all those who are involved directly and
indirectly in the palm oil industry, from 50
countries. It will be one of the worlds largest
palm oil technical and trade congregations.
PIPOC has five concurrent conferences to
provide a strategic platform for interaction
and in-depth deliberation of the many facets
of oil palm and the palm oil industry, on
innovations, latest developments, challenges
and the way forward for the industry.
The theme for PIPOC 2017, Treasuring
the Past, Charting the Future, is timely
with the commemoration of 100 years of
commercial planting of oil palm in Malaysia.

The Congress features five concurrent conferences covering upstream, midstream, downstream,
economics and marketing.

A keynote address will be delivered by distinguished experts in the field of oils and fats. Five
plenary lectures will be held in the afternoon of 14 November 2017. The lectures will cover
various topics of interest in line with the theme of the Congress.

Objectives:
To discuss strategic R&D findings in all aspects of the oil palm and palm oil industry worldwide;
To adopt recent technological findings that will improve the oil palm/palm oil industry; and
To formulate strategies towards enhanced sustainability, competitiveness, automation
and policies on trade, market trends and trade challenges.

THE VENUE
Situated at the heart of Kuala Lumpurs central business district, the Kuala Lumpur Convention
Centre (KLCC) is the citys most technologically advanced, purpose-built facility for international,
regional and local conventions, trade shows, public exhibitions, entertainment and private
functions. Designed as a city within a city, KLCC offers a stimulating environment where one
can work, live, shop, visit and enjoy life. Other components include a 25-ha park, the signature
PETRONAS Twin Towers, the AsySyakirin Mosque, six-storey Suria KLCC shopping centre,
PETROSAINS interactive science discovery centre, Galeri PETRONAS and the Dewan Filharmonik
PETRONAS, home of the Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra.

An evening not to be missed Participants are invited to attend the Congress Dinner on 15
November 2017, showcasing a live entertainment featuring the multicultural heritage of Malaysia.

 TECHNICAL TOURS
On Monday, 13 November 2017, technical tours to selected destinations have been arranged
for local and international delegates. The tours allow delegates to experience and gain new
knowledge in various aspects of the oil palm industry in Malaysia. These are the options for
delegates:

OPTION A: Plantation

In 2016, 5.74 million hectares of land in Malaysia was under oil palm cultivation. Malaysia is
the second largest producer of oil palm in the world. A visit to an oil palm plantation is a must
while you are in Malaysia. Visit a plantation to get close experiences in managing an oil palm
estate and learn how to improve productivity and optimise resources. Delegates can take this
opportunity to get knowledge and advice from experienced estate managers.

OPTION B: Biogas Plant

Biogas capture is a key agenda in our country to ensure the sustainability of palm oil industry. In
Malaysia, oil palm operators are required to implement sustainability practices through optimal
usage of natural resources and their biomass products. This technical tour provides delegates
the opportunity to visit a plant where biogas is produced from palm oil mill effluent (POME) and
then scrubbed and purified to produce clean methane for use as fuel.

OPTION C: MPOB Research Station in Keratong, Pahang

Located in Keratong, Pahang, this research station was established in 1992. The land area is
about 607 ha of which 522 ha is designated for oil palm plantation for conducting R&D activities
especially on oil palm planting materials. This research station also has an animal feed
processing plant for producing quality animal feed. It also has a training centre which provides
training to local youths in areas related to plantation, mechanisation and entrepreneurship.

SESSION 1 AGRICULTURE
This year marks the 100th year of oil palm cultivation in Malaysia. The oil palm is a significant
commodity crop for many countries along the equatorial belt. Suitable temperature, soil and rainfall are
prerequisites to sustain the crops productivity. In addition, key agricultural practices such as fertiliser
application, pest control, mechanisation and physiology of the palm play important roles in maximising
the yield of this golden crop. External challenges such as land and labor shortage, environmental
degradation, erratic weather patterns and rising fuel cost considerably affect the yield of this crop. This
session will discuss the latest upstream management practices, crop bio-security, innovations in farm
mechanisation, application of remote sensing and precision agriculture towards achieving higher yield
and productivity.

SESSION 2 BIOTECHNOLOGY
Reaching a centennial milestone is indicative of the resilience of the oil palm industry in overcoming
challenges and adapting to changing times. Over the years, the industry has witnessed changing
consumer trends and technological advancements spearheading the direction of research in
biotechnology. This session will further unveil oil palm emerging omics-based technologies to usher
in the next era of growth in productivity and sustainable cultivation of the crop. The holistic tactics
adopted in converging biotechnology tools with breeding will guarantee the crops commercial viability
for the future.

SESSION 3 SUSTAINABILITY
Over the years, there has been increasing demand for sustainable palm oil. The oil palm players and
stakeholders play a vital role towards ensuring the continued cultivation of oil palm. This session will
discuss in detail the principles and criteria for growing oil palm with respect to sustainability issues.
Various challenges such as biodiversity, environmental aspects and smallholders issues faced by the
stakeholders in the palm oil industry will also be discussed.

SESSION 1 MILLING AND PROCESSING TECHNOLOGY

Updates on improvements of milling and processing technologies will be discussed in this session.
These technologies will match the demands for processing from the upstream and the requirements for
quality from downstream and at the same time comply with the prevailing environmental regulations.
Industry experience on holistic approaches in palm oil processing will be highlighted.

SESSION 2 SCIENCE AND EMERGING TECHNOLOGY, ANALYTICAL AND

QUALITY
Clean and emerging technologies have attracted great interest in recent years and have great potential
in the oil palm industry. Thus, this session will cover topics on the development of green products
via green processes involving the use of clean processes and less energy, application of renewable
resources, and enzyme catalysed reactions. Submissions that reflect novel analytical methods,
interesting technologies related to analysis and updated, improved techniques for oils and fats
characterisation are encouraged.

SESSION 3 BIO-ENERGY
Besides food, the products from the oil palm industry hold much promise as a source of green
energy. This session will discuss the issues and challenges on oil palm bio-energy. Research on
recent technology advancement in synthesis, processing and application of oil palm bio-energy will
be discussed. Potential topics include, but are not limited to, enzymatic and catalytic processing, new
feedstock, biomass pretreatment, etc.

SESSION 4 ENVIRONMENT AND SUSTAINABILITY

This session covers issues related to management, treatment or avoidance of palm oil mill effluent,
particulate emissions, characterisation of possible minor components in waste streams and
technologies for measuring and removal of contaminants. Various efforts and development studies
related to the total environmental impact of palm oil production will be highlighted. The benefit to the
present and future generation of mankind will also be discussed in this session.

SESSION 5 BIOMASS UTILISATION

This session will focus on some of the key technologies, as well as policy issues related to the choice of
feedstocks and technology conversion platforms for the production of biocomposite products, industrial
chemicals/biochemicals and bioenergy generation. The latest development in oil palm biomass into
biochar and fine chemicals will be highlighted and discussed in this session.

SESSION 6 REFINING TECHNOLOGY

Increased focus on oil quality and refining yields has driven developments in refining technologies. This
session offers an overview of the different refining technologies, with focus on yield and product quality.

CONFERENCE
SESSION 1 OLEOCHEMICAL SUSTAINABILITY
For todays oleochemical industry to develop sustainably, it must adopt business strategies that balance
the needs of the industry and its stakeholders while still protecting, sustaining and enhancing the
society and natural resources that will be needed in the future. The mandate to transform businesses
to respect environmental limits while fulfilling social needs has become an ultimate platform for
innovation in crafting strategy, design, manufacturing and brand. Efforts to produce environmental
friendly and sustainable palm-based oleochemical products are continuously being the emphasis of
the industry to fulfil the needs of new requirements and regulations. During this session, topics on
sustainability of the oleochemical industry and some updates will be deliberated by the speakers.

SESSION 2 GREEN CHEMISTRY: THE GAME CHANGER

Development and innovations in the design of green chemical products and processes are highly
pursued for carving the pathway towards a sustainable future. This session provides a platform of
cutting-edge research under a green chemistry framework in the oleochemical industry. Based on
the green chemistry principle, this session will focus on biocatalysts, renewable and biodegradable
materials, as well as safer and efficient synthetic approaches.

SESSION 3 FORMULATING OLEOCHEMICALS FOR NICHE APPLICATIONS

Technological advancements and developments of bio-based products in the downstream sectors
such as personal care, soap and detergents, and public health products will be the key drivers for
market growth. With the increasing awareness among consumers on environmental issues, green and
sustainable bio-based oleochemical continue to be important in the development of bio-based products
for the niche market segment. This session will discuss the development of oleochemical products in
meeting the growth of specific demands in various sectors of the industry.

SESSION 4 TECHNOLOGY FOR REALISING A BETTER FUTURE

This session covers some of the recent technology developments of the downstream oleochemical
industry. As technology moves beyond conventional processes, cutting-edge technologies have taken
the lead in order to conform to the latest issues relating to processes, environmental and sustainability.
Novel discovery will cut short the traditional long process required for product improvements. The
application of modern technologies such as catalytic and green sustainable processes will be discussed.
In addition, various aspects to bridge these opportunities and realising them will be explored.

Charting In 2015, the Asia Pacific has been the leading oleochemical market which accounted for over 40% of
the Future the total volume. In addition to being the largest consumer, the region is also the leading producer of
oleochemicals. Hence, the challenges and opportunities for oleochemicals today lie in the changing
economic and ecological conditions which demand sustainable and environmental friendly products.
Speakers from across the oleochemical value chains will provide an objective assessment on the

In its century of existence in Malaysia, the oil palm industry has moved from strength-to-strength.
Currently, it is one of the most important pillars of the national economy despite facing all the
challenges and allegations. Over the period, Malaysian palm oil has met the key sustainable
development goals as outlined by the United Nations including reducing poverty, eliminating hunger,
providing decent work, promoting economic growth and education as well as contributing to good
health and well-being.

Globally, there has been a tremendous development in nutrition research particularly on the emerging
revelation on saturated fats. However, the perception towards saturated fat has hardly changed. As we
are now at the crossroads, new research and technology breakthroughs are essential to revolutionise
the industry. The Food Health & Nutrition Conference will address these concerns through stimulating
discussions, debates as well as providing evidence and engagements with various experts in nutrition,
health, food ingredients, applications, safety and quality.

SESSION 1 DEVELOPMENT IN LIPID INNOVATION

The evolution of food technology entails the creation of new and improved products. This session will
address novel strategies to diversify the applications of oils and fats in food formulations. Experts
from various sectors will focus on current challenges and the way forward in generating value added
palm-based products using recent and emerging technologies.

SESSION 2 LIPID FUNCTIONAL INGREDIENTS

Innovation in lipid ingredients provides the insight to novel food development without affecting its
functionality and sensory attributes. Growing interest in health benefits, organoleptic properties
and cost-effectiveness has created a demand for new lipid functional ingredients. This session will
elucidate the potential of palm-derived functional lipids.

SESSION 3 FOOD SAFETY AND QUALITY

Issues associated with food safety and quality have become a major concern amongst food industries
and consumers globally. Latest advancements in the processing of oils and fats for food applications
with emphasis on safety and quality will be discussed. This session will also provide a platform for
disseminating the latest findings on mitigation of unwanted process-developed compounds.

SESSION 4 LIPID NUTRITION AND HEALTH
This session will feature the latest findings in lipid nutrition research highlighting the changing
perception on saturated fats in relation to chronic diseases. The role of saturated fats and carbohydrates
in the human diet and their health implications will be deliberated.

SESSION 5 PHYTONUTRIENTS AND CLINICAL EVIDENCE

This session will focus on current findings and potential health benefits of palm-based phytonutrients.
Emphasis will be on the beneficial effects of palm tocotrienols, carotenoids, phenolics as well as other
health-related phytonutrients derived from palm oil. Latest clinical evidence will be emphasised.

NUTRITION FORUM PALM OIL AND HEALTH PAST EXPERIENCE,

CURRENT ISSUES AND FUTURE PROSPECTS
The health benefits of palm oil have been overshadowed by the misconception of saturated fats.
Although there is a wave of change in the emerging evidence related to saturated fats on health, palm
oil continues to unduly suffer a negative image. This forum will feature experts in health and nutrition
areas who will deliberate and unveil new research findings and counter the general perception about
saturated fats and its effect on our health.

The Global Economics & Marketing Conference (GEM) will highlight the importance of palm oil by
treasuring the past performance/achievements of palm oil especially in Malaysia and charting the
industrys future in the world oils and fats complex. Leading experts and speakers, both local and
international will share their views and experiences on this subject matter.

SESSION 1 PALM OIL THE DRIVER OF GLOBAL OILS AND FATS

The global competitiveness of palm oil will determine the future demand of palm oil in the oils and
fats market by consumers since palm oil is deemed as the driver of global oils and fats. In spite of the
emergence of new markets, China and India still retain their positions as the major importers of palm
oil. Thus, it is vital to continue to focus on these markets. Apart from this, it is worth exploring the
cost of production of other oilseeds and oils and fats since the industry is very competitive in nature.
Pertinent themes related to these areas will also be deliberated by eminent speakers.

SESSION 2 SUSTAINING PALM OIL ECONOMIC COMPETITIVENESS AND

ENVIRONMENT
The increasing challenge in maintaining the competitiveness of palm oil in the world market is that
of allegations of environment mismanagement in the oil palm sector, particularly related to the
sustainable production of palm oil. Non-Governmental Organisations (NGOs) have raised concerns
on the need to promote sustainability in food production. As such, in order to promote the competitive
growth and use of sustainable palm oil, the Malaysian Sustainable Palm Oil (MSPO) has been
established. Malaysian oil palm plantations are also too dependent on foreign workers, which could
affect the development of this sector. Therefore, it is timely for the industry players, especially oil palm
plantations, to promote the use of mechanisation in their oil palm plantations. Prominent speakers
will deliberate on appropriate strategies to meet the challenges faced by the industry.

SESSION 3 ECONOMIC CHALLENGES IN SUSTAINING THE FUTURE FOR PALM

OIL
The Malaysian oil palm industry is currently confronted with increasing competition not only from
other palm oil producing countries but also discriminatory trade impediments imposed in the
importing countries. In order to sustain the industrys competitiveness, the way forward is to
increase the downstream activities, while enhancing the upstream activities through upgrading both
infrastructure, facilities and logistics. Experts in the palm oil industry will share the fruits of their
thoughts and expertise in these areas.

SESSION 4 TRADE AND FUTURE MARKET OUTLOOK FOR PALM OIL

Palm oil has witnessed a meteoric rise since the last century. The world oils and fats complex and
how it affects palm oil supply and demand in the future will be looked into. Coupled with this, the
volatility of palm oil prices will subsequently lead to the instability in the demand for palm oil. Thus
there is a great need for market diversification of palm oil in order to strengthen the export and price
performance of palm oil in the long run. Palm oil experts will share their expertise and experience
in these areas. The competitiveness of Malaysian palm oil through branding will also be elucidated.
 EVENING FORUM 2017
This years theme, Treasuring the Past, Charting the Future focuses on the challenges
faced by the oil palm industry as well as to acknowledge achievements and to navigate the future
through sustainable growth of the oil palm industry. This forum provides an avenue for leaders of the
industry to reminiscence into the past and to deliberate the future path of the oil palm industry. This
platform will help generate new ideas that can be adopted to chart the future growth of our oil palm
industry.
