EE5130 Problem Set 1

1. Determine the output of an LTI system if the impulse response h() and the input x () are
as follows:

(a) x (n) = u(n) and h(n) = an u(n 1), with a > 1.

(b) h(n) = 2n u(n 1) and x (n) = u(n) u(n 10).

Use linearity and time-invariance to minimize the work in part(b).

2. Consider the following three sequences:

x1 (n) = A (a constant); x2 (n) = u(n); x3 () = { (1), 1} .
Determine (a) x2 ( x3 x1 ), and (b) ( x2 x3 ) x1 . Are the two results the same?

3. Let y() = x () h(). Let h(n) = 0 outside 0 n N 1, which reduces the convolution
summation to a finite one, with no restrictions on x (). Let the column vector y represent
the output from n = 0 to n = N 1, and the column vector h the samples of h() from
n = 0 to n = N 1. Express the convolution as the matrix-vector product y = X h. What
are the entries of the matrix X?

4. Let y() = x () h(), where x () = { (2), 2, 3, 3, 4}, and y() = { 2, (4), 9, 10, 13, 10, 8}.
Determine the sequence h().

5. Let the signal () be defined as (n) = (1/2)n u(n).

(a) Express the unit impulse () as a linear combination of scaled and shifted versions
of (). Hint: Sketch {(n)} for n 0 and figure out how to cancel the right tail of
().

(b) Using the above result, express any signal x () as x (n) = a k ( n k ).

Determine the coefficient ak in terms of { x (n)}.
(c) If {r (n)} is the response of an LTI system to {(n)}, express the response y() to x ()
in terms of r () and x (). Specifically, express the impulse response of the system h()
in terms of r ().

tion of its argument.

7. Determine the Inverse-DTFT of the following functions:

(a) X (e j ) = cos N , for an arbitrary integer N > 0.
(b) Y (e j ) = cos N (/2), for an arbitrary even integer N > 0.
Express the cosine function in terms of complex exponentials, and apply the binomial
theorem.
