Crazy change coming.
History?
History, rightly studied, should provide us
with:
Seeing Gods hand of influence guiding and
unfolding HIS plan and purpose for people
and to bring about true and lasting liberty
for mankind.

Whats the purpose?
- Its Significance!
Not random or arbitrary.
What was happening?

A start of a change of
thinking, teaching, direction
of the Kingdom of God
(Church) with a new
understanding or awakening
of God and His Word, a small
start of revival in learning,
art, literature.
What was happening?

The failure of the church to

meet this passionate yearning
was the most significant
single factor in preparing the
way for the Protestant
Reformation. Jones, 23.
A key players who would
shaped the church.

Morning star of the Reformation.

John Wycliffe (1329-1384)
Who was he?
Wycliffe lived almost 200
years before the Reformation,
but his beliefs and teachings
closely match those of Luther,
Calvin and other reformers. As
a man ahead of his time.
A leading theologian and
philosopher at Oxford
university.
Who was he?

He criticized abuses and

false teachings in the
Church. In 1382 he
translated an English Bible
the first complete European
translation done in nearly
1,000 years. The Lollards,
itinerant preachers poor
preachers he sent
throughout England, inspired
a spiritual revolution.
Who was he?
The Church expelled Wycliffe
from his teaching position at
Oxford, and 44 years after he
died, the Pope ordered his bones
exhumed and burned. Intense
persecution stamped out his
followers and teachings. It would
be hundreds of years before men
like Martin Luther resurrected the
reforms of which Wycliffe
dreamed.

What is the starting

The Sacerdotal System

The sacramental system was

the means by which salvation
was exclusively mediated to
man. It was a birth to death
comprehensive system.

Catholic Church. The Pope is

5 Pillars of the
Holy Roman Catholic Church.
Historical View
Power and Control of the Church

5 Pillars of the Holy Roman Catholic Church for

all true believers/members.
1, Baby Baptism into the Church by ordained
priest. ( Org. sin?)
2, Attend mass (1 Service a week or more) blessing
from a ordained priest.
3, Take Euchres / Host from an ordained priest.
4, Confess sin to ordained priest.
5, Holy unction at time of death preformed by
ordained priest.
The Sacerdotal System
Baptism of infants brought them
into the community, marriage was
a sacrament, forgiveness for sin
was provided through penance,
union with God and eternal life
through the mass, extreme
unction at death prepared you for
eternity.
Indulgence Controversy
In other words, how could one
be sure that he was free from
the punishment or really in right
standing with God? This is
where indulgences, drawing on
the treasury of merit, came into
the picture. It was in effect a
way to get your sin paid off.
Indulgence Controversy
First : Pope Urban II's promise of
complete indulgence to all who
joined the first crusade.1000s
This Idea The theory was that
Christ and the saints had
achieved more merit than was
necessary for their own
salvation..
Key ideas: (four tenets )
1, Christ, not the Pope, is the head of
the church.
2, Scripture, not the church, is the sole
authority for the believer.
3, Priesthood of all believers. The church
should model itself after the NT.
4, Salvation by faith alone. Opposed
transubstantiation and indulgences.
