150 words in
Russian you never
knew you knew

I know what you are going to say. Whenever you have

seen the Russian alphabet - it looked strange.
Whenever you have heard anyone speak Russian it
sounded the same.

But things are about to get a little bit less strange. There
are hundreds and hundreds of words in Russian that
have been borrowed and adopted from English,
French, German and other languages and that have
now found their way into everyday speech. These words
will be like music to your ears because they will sound
familiar and comforting.

The beauty of the Russian language is that most of the

time you say what you read. No complicated consonant

or vowel combinations to remember, no disappearing
letters when it comes to pronunciation.
The main things you need to keep an eye on are the
stress, or more precisely the vowels with a stress mark,
those will be emphasised during the speech. If there is
more than one o vowel in a word and it is unstressed, it
will be pronounced as a. Here is a quick example: a
word milk- is actually pronounced as
aa, since the first two o vowels arent stressed.
Lastly, dont forget that letter is always stressed and
the letter , appearing between vowels at the end of a
word, is pronounced as a (for example - have a
good day - will actually be pronounced
as aa ).

But like with all things in life, the more you speak, read,
and hear Russian, the easier it will become.

Before you start, feel free to refer to our handy alphabet

guide to help you.

And now take a deep breath, relax and start speaking
