ABSTRACT
Excess cholesterol or cholesterol tingggi (hypercholesterolemia) will cause problems, especially in blood vessels,
heart and brain. Hypercholesterolemia can lead to atherosclerosis, so that the walls of arteries that have
atherosclerosis will become thick, stiff, lose elasticity, narrowing and hardening, resulting in the muscles of the
arteries will be lost, and less elasticity in regulating blood pressure. If this happens it could lead to various diseases
such as hypertension, arrhythmias, heart attacks, strokes and so on. The purpose of this study to determine the
relationship of cholesterol levels with blood pressure in hypertensive patients in the disease in Tarutung Hospital
Resort in 2009. This type of research is a descriptive correlation, with cross sectional approach. The population in
this study were all patients with hypertension who were treated in the disease in Tarutung Hospital Resort by
accidental sampling method of sampling, in order to obtain a sample of 21 people. Cholesterol levels were measured
using a digital gauges cholesterol, whereas blood pressure was measured using a sphygmomanometer and
stethoscope. Both of these data are written on pieces of the observation. The test statistic used is the Spearman Rank
test at = 0.05. The results showed no relationship with cholesterol levels of blood pressure in hypertensive patients
with the strength of the relationship is strong (p = 0.003 r = 0.621). It is therefore recommended to patients with
hypertension to reduce the consumption of foods containing high cholesterol, controlling stress, exercising regularly
and do a cholesterol and blood pressure regularly in a certain period of time. For researchers next need to do more
research on the relationship with blood pressure, cholesterol levels, and research should be done with the number of
samples more and more homogeneous.
