HOW WELL DOES YOUR CHILD BEHAVE?

Parents, are you tired of bargaining with your children just to get a little cooperation? Are you frustrated
by their lack of respect? Here are a few great ideas from child behavior expert Ronald Morrish, author of
the book “Secrets of Discipline” (ISBN 0-9681131-0-9)

“Do-overs” - Contrary to popular belief, consequences will not teach good behaviour. Only correction and
positive practice will do the job. So instead of saying, “if you talk that way to me again, you will go to your
room!” try saying “We don’t speak that way in our home. Now start over.”

Temper Tantrums - On this issue, research is very clear. You must never give in to temper tantrums. If
children get what they want just once out of every ten tantrums, that is enough to keep the tantrums going.
In fact they will get louder, longer and more violent. So don’t give in.

Teach skills and manners - You can reduce behaviour problems and help your children increase their
responsibility, independence and self-control by teaching them skills and manners. Children who say “please”,
“thank you” and “excuse me” have skills that serve them well throughout their lives.

Ronald Morrish will be speaking in School District 6 at Sussex Regional High School on Monday, August 30
and at the Kings Valley Wesleyan Church (322 Hampton Rd, Quispamsis) on Wednesday, September 1, both
sessions starting at 7 pm. You will have many “ah-ha!” moments as you learn about ideas that are practical,
effective, and immediately applicable. All parents are welcome to these free presentations.
This Fall, HALL will be holding workshops for parents on how to raise well-behaved children using
Mr. Morrish’s book, “The Secrets of Discipline”.

things were coming together, Parker died suddenly and

unexpectedly at the end of May. He was 43. Randy Hampton

There was no more discussion about the camp-out for a 721-2919 (C)
couple of weeks. Then Matthew brought it up again; "I want to
sleep in the tent", he said. Everyone agreed, and in late June,
a temporary plywood floor was laid down, an outdoor
fireplace was set up, and hot dogs and marshmallows were
bought. On the chosen evening the nursing home staff drifted
in and out all evening to check on Matthew and to be part of a
special and unusual evening in the life of the home. No one
could recall ever hearing of a nursing home resident
anywhere camping out. Eventually, as the evening grew late,
they took Matthew back inside and put him into his own big
hospital-style bed and covered him up with the sleeping bag
his parents had brought from home. Then the nurses wheeled
him out into the garden and into the tent. The two volunteers
stayed with him on camp cots. Matthew woke just before
dawn and he was wheeled out of the tent in his bed so he could
watch the sun rise in the open air.
A few days later, he was outside again; this time to help plant
a tree in front of the home in memory of his brother - a ginko
that could easily live several hundred years, and maybe much
longer.
Matthew may have been the first resident of the VA Snow
Centre ever to camp out, but he might not be the last. 120

STAY SAFE IN THE WATER THIS SUMMER
WE PROTECT, YOU SAVE ... As the weather gets warmer, we start to think about our
favorite summer activities. Taking a dip to cool off in a
pool, ocean or lake may be near the top of your family's
list. When swimming or playing near water, it is
important for families to keep safety in mind.
Drowning is the second most common cause of injur y
death for children in Canada. For ever y toddler who
drowns, three to five more children have a near
drowning where they have to be admitted to the
hospital. Most toddler drownings happen in home
swimming pools.
Backyard pools should have a four foot high fence on all
four sides, with a self-latching gate. The house should
not replace one side of the fence. If self-latching gates
are used, nearly all toddler pool drownings and almost
1/3 of all toddler drownings could be prevented.

late movers, lost and damaged goods, over-

solely on price when deciding on a mover," says
