This is the first level of the Chartered Market Technician program, administered by the Accreditation Committee of the
Market Technicians Association (MTA). It's purpose is to promote the development of a candidate's professional
knowledge with respects to the field of technical analysis. Three exam levels must be completed successfully within
a 5-year period, and an individual must agree to adhere to the MTA Code of Ethics before CMT certification will be
awarded. The first level focuses mainly on basic definitions, charting methods and other entry-level topics.

Prerequisites: Must successfully complete CMT level 1 examination.

knowledge with respects to the field of technical analysis. Three exam levels must be completed successfully and
an individual must agree to adhere to the MTA Code of Ethics before CMT certification will be awarded. The third
and last level tests a candidates knowledge by requiring them to demonstrate their technical analysis skills through
a research paper or essay. At this stage the candidate should be proficient in analyzing charts and technical data and
forming their own research opinion, portfolio strategies, and trading decisions.
Time Limit: 4 hours. Alternately, candidates have the option to submit a research paper.
Cost: $400 US. Note that this does not include the $300 US MTA annual dues.
Format: Essay.
Prerequisites: Must successfully complete CMT level 2 examination.
Exam Date(s): The second last Saturday in May and November.

CMT program is self-study, so be sure to follow the required readings for each level.

You cannot choose to write both the research paper and the exam, you must choose one. If you choose to write a research
paper, you must demonstrate your ability to integrate what you have learned in levels 1 and 2 with actual data analysis. If
the peer review panel of the MTA Accreditation Committee reviewing your paper passes you, your paper could be
published in the MTA's Journal of Technical Analysis.
