Twenty-first Sunday in Ordinary Time
In the Gospel this weekend, Jesus asks, Who do people say that I am? Perhaps the extremely uncomfortable
recent national conversations lately have us asking the same question about ourselves. Who are we individually
and collectively? Who are we as a nation, who are we as a world-wide church and who are we as a local church
here in downtown Boston?
All three entities, if viewed correctly, honor and celebrate diversity in every way that it presents itself in humanity.
In the Catholic faith we are always, always enriched by the devotions and holy lives of people different than
ourselves. Even a casual inspection of the lives of the saints reveals a myriad of the different ways in which
holiness reveals itself through the lives of every single type person. Whether you are white or black, Asian or
Latino, gay or straight, man or woman, family person or single person, old, young, or a fetus(!), every single person
is made in the image of God and is worthy of the utmost respect and dignity.
Im appalled by the discussion of white supremacy or neo-Nazis. That world-view is completely antithetical to my
life as an American, a Catholic, and a Bostonian. The question, Why are we even talking about this? comes to
mind. As an aside, we extend our thanks to the Boston Police Department, Mayor Marty Walsh, and Cardinal
Sean OMalley for leadership in this area. St. Anthony Shrine is happy to be an All-Are-Welcome church in an
All-Are-Welcome city.
The friars welcomed Fr. Frank Sevola, OFM, to the Shrine on Wednesday. Fr. Frank will work at the Shrine as the
Guardian of the Franciscan community of friars, as well as the Director of Worship for the Shrine. We thank our
outgoing Guardian Fr. John Hogan as he finishes his term. We thank Fr. John for his spirit of kindness and
gentleness during his time here.
Debby Hawes, the Shrines Director of Facilities is leaving the Shrine to take another position with a much easier
commute. Debby has been loyal to the friars over her 15-year term here, always doing a great job of taking care of
the building and especially the special needs of infirmed friars here at the Shrine. Debby also dutifully supervised
security, housekeeping, snow removal, and the HVAC needs of the building. Unlike most positions at the Shrine,
her duties usually involved being on call 24 hours a day and 7 days a week. We are very grateful for her good work
on our behalf.
A big thank you to Fr. Brian Cullinane, OFM, who has supervised the Labor Day Raffle this summer. It is an
important fund-raiser for the Shrine. There is still time to buy chances for it. The drawing is at 6:30pm on Sunday,
September 3. First prize is $10,000 and you do not need to be present at the drawing to win.
Fr. Barrys final Mass at the Shrine is the 5:30pm Mass the same evening as the raffle drawing: Sunday, September
3. Thank you, Fr. Barry, for, among other things, your tireless work and advocacy for the Senior community here
at St. Anthony.
