Past Weeks Review

WELCOME TO THE FIRST GRADE!

We are happy to say that we have successfully completed our first week of First Grade here at
BYDS! All of the children had a wonderful time as they got to see their old classmates again, make
new friends, and learn the ropes of First Grade. The students also shared their stories on how they
felt the first day as they arrived in their new classrooms. In the classroom the students are learning
the class expectations and routines and are all working hard to listen and follow directions. During
this past week, we made a class puzzle to show how our school family fits together. We now
understand the saying Things go better when you work together! We created a Time Capsule
which we will open again on the last week of school. We started our poetry binders with poems
that related to the beginning of the school year.

The children have enjoyed exploring the school, investigating new classrooms, meeting new
teachers, and learning all kinds of new things. We will go to library every week. Please be sure
your child returns his/her library book on his/her day. (Zimmermann Monday) (Adler Thursday)

We started our first unit on names. Each child in the class will get to be the Special
Student of the Day. As a class, we look at the childs name discussing how many syllables are in
the name, the spelling of the name, and the number of consonants and vowels in the name, too.
Then, the special student cheers his/her name, is interviewed by the class, and everyone learns
how to write his/her name. After that, each child draws a picture of the student and writes what is
special about that student. This will be culminated into a class book that the Special Student of
the Day will get to take home very soon. The children each look forward to learning more about
themselves and others as we continue to have a Special Student of the Day over the next few
weeks.

In Math, this week we began our first unit, Numbers 0 to 10! The students practiced
counting to ten and back, reading and writing numerals and their number words, and recognizing
zero as an empty set. We can find one more or one less, than a number, arrange numbers in order,
and determine missing numbers in a sequence. To practice, the students used different colored
beaded bracelets to create various equations for the numbers 1-10. Then we recorded it in our
Learning Logs! See the pictures below for examples.
In Science, this week

Adler: This week Mrs. Adler's class was lucky to have their science lab on Monday during the
solar eclipse! We read about what happens during a solar eclipse, why it is so rare to see, and
played with a model of the earth, moon, and sun. We then went outside to experience the moon
blocking the sun with our special protective glasses or with special eclipse viewers made from
cardboard. What a day to have their first science lab of the school year!

Zimmermann: Last week we discovered that we are all in fact scientists! This week we began
our first FOSS unit on Sound. We discussed common animals, machines, and objects that make
sound. We used cups with rubber bands and flat sticks to produce sound. We focused on the
source of the sound and found that it was vibrating. We explored a table fiddle to confirm our
observations. We learned that sound can be stopped by stopping the object's vibrations.

In Spanish this year, we will be using a new book called, Hola Mundo! Our first unit will teach
us how to introduce ourselves, to greet and say goodbye, and the alphabet. Spanish class will be a
time for your children to learn a new language with many songs and acting while having lots of fun!

In Art, the first graders are completing their first art lesson on creating a symmetrical
creature using the letters in their name. They had so much fun and came up with some very
creative and funny faces! We experimented with crayon pastels and learned how to rub and
overlap the colors to create beautiful backgrounds for their pictures. They are doing such an
awesome job and I am so proud of them!

Shabbat Shalom!

Have a great weekend!

Every Monday is Spirit Dress Day! Students may come dressed in a spirit dress shirt and
jeans! If there is no school on a Monday, Tuesday becomes Spirit Dress Day.
