Abstract

Hydroxyapatite [Ca10(PO4)6(OH)2] is a ceramic material that is widely used as a biomaterial

within the area of medicine. However, currently found that hydroxyapatite (HAp) presents a
thermoluminescent behavior when it is exposed to ionizing radiation. Studies also show that
the degree of crystallinity and presence of dopants can modify the thermoluminescent
response of the materials [1]. So, there is the possibility to synthesize HAp doped with silver
nanoparticles [AgNP's] to study and understand the thermoluminescent behavior of this
nanosystem when it is exposed to ionizing radiation field [1,2]. This work focuses on the
study of the thermoluminescent signal of HAp doped with AgNP's when it is exposed o
gamma radiation. Initially, silver nanoparticles were synthesized via colloidal method with
different average particle sizes from 17 to 64 nm with a spherical morphology, according to
scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and UV (UV-vis) spectroscopy analysis. On the other
hand, HAp was synthesized by the microwave hydrothermal method; AgNP's were added
during the synthesis in a proportion of 0.5 wt %. A complementary study on AgNP's doped
HAp was performed using X-ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy (TEM)
techniques; fiber structures with average sizes from 20 to 40 nm in diameter were observed.
Results obtained show that AgNP's doped Hap could be considered as a dosimeter material
to quantify the intensity of the ionizing radiation field.

Keywords: Nano-hydroxyapatite, silver nanoparticles and thermoluminescent.
