Formative Assessment Student Indicators

___________________________________________________________________________
Instructions: The following list explains positive and negative indicators of student engagement in the
learning process. It corresponds with the formative assessment spreadsheet. Different indicators are used
for different types of activities. Those highlighted in green are positive indicators, while those highlighted
in red are negative indicators. They are used to assess students and as a tool to aid the teacher in
differentiation and future planning. Each indicator has a code which corresponds with the spreadsheet.

To be used during class discussion:


Students answer a question posed by the teacher (Ans)

Students explain their thinking / reasoning when answering a complex question (A + E)

Students ask questions / make statements which help to expand the discussion, or make connections with other
knowledge (other subjects, society, prior knowledge, etc) (QSExp)

Students are off-task and when asked, can not answer or restate question (OTNA)

To be used during self-directed learning opportunities:


Students examine the validity of a view, decision or information source (can also be during class discussion or group
work) (Eval)

Students ask questions to clarify their understanding of the task and / or content (Ques)

Student can explain what they are learning, and how what they are doing helps them to learn. (Meta P)

Students can explain why their behavior (ex. taking notes vs. not) is beneficial for their learning (marked when
student can not explain) (Meta N)

To be used during group work:


Students ask questions to clarify their understanding of the task and / or material (QTM)

Students ask questions / make statements which demonstrate application of content knowledge to knowledge from
other courses, societal issues, or prior knowledge (AK)

Student explains a concept or instructions to their peers (T)

To be used at all times:


Students are engaged in the learning process (marked when students are off-task) (Engage)

Students are following classroom rules (marked when students are not following rules) (Rules)

Students are active and eager during the learning process (marked when students demonstrate poor body language
/ fall asleep) (BL / SL)

Students are prepared for class (marked when students come to class unprepared) (UnPrep)

Students communicate in spoken English when directed to do so (marked when students speak in Thai or do not
speak) (NSE)
