Mass: How much matter is in an object

: Combien la matire est dans un objet
We measure mass by weighing, but Weight and mass are not really the same thing.
Weight or Mass?
We have used the word weight only because that is what people commonly say.
Parce que ce que les gens disent souvent

These are the most common measurements:
- Grams
- Kilograms
- Tonnes
Grams are the smallest, Tonnes are the biggest.
Grams or Gramme: A paperclip weighs about 1 gram.
Grams are often written as g (for short), so 300 g means 300 grams.
Often: many times;
Kilograms: Once we have 1000 grams, we have 1 kilogram.
A Dictionary has a mass of about one kilogram.
Kilograms are great for measuring things that can be lifted by people
(Sometimes very strong people are needed of course!)
Kilograms are often written as kg (that is a k for kilo and a g for gram
Tonne: Once we have 1000 kilograms, we will have 1 Tonne.
Tonnes (also called Metric Tons) are used to measure things that are very heavy.

2- U.S MEASURES:
In the US. The same system as that which applies in Great Britain is used for the most part, the main difference are
mentioned below.

Aux tats-Unis. Le mme systme que celui qui est applicable en Grande-Bretagne est utilis pour la plupart des cas,
la diffrence principale est mentionne ci-dessous.

The numerical notations of measures:

Numerical equivalents are shown in Standard English notation when they are translations of French measures:
quivalents numriques sont prsents en notation standard en anglais quand ils sont des traductions de
mesures franaises

Eg. 1 millimetre= 0.03937 inch

Eg. 1 inch= 2.54 cm

LINEAR MEASURMENTS
Question;
- What is a linear measurement?
Quick Answer
A linear measurement assigns a numerical value for the length of an object or between objects. Unit of linear measure

include inch, foot meter, kilometer and mile. Linear measurements have one dimension, whereas square measurements

have two dimensions and cubic measurements have three.

1 millimetre mm ----------------------------0.03937 inch

1 centimetre cm ---------------------------- 0.3937 inch

1 metre m------------------------------ 39.37 inches = 1.094 yards

1 kilometre km -----------------------------0.6214 mile (5/8 mile)

1 nautical mile ---------------------------------1852 mtres

1 inch In------------------------------ 2.54 cm

1 foot ft ------------------------------12 inches = 30.48 centimetres

1 yard -------------------------------- 03 feet = 91.44 cm

1 furlong --------------------------------- 220 yards = 201.17 m

1 mile -----------------------------------1.760 yards =1.609 km

SQUARE MEASURMENTS / Area Unit

There are many different units of area, such as 'square centimetres', 'hectares', 'square feet'
and 'acres'.
To change the units of a quantity, it is multiplied or divided by some constant value, called a
conversion factor
This table lists ten different area units, and values that will help you change units of area
