Mini-lesson Reflection

Q: As a teacher, what challenges did you face when trying to teach your

lesson/content to the class?

A: When I was the teacher some challenges I faced when I was trying to

teach the lesson to the class was that there were awkward long pauses as

the students were trying to process what I was saying to them in Italian.

Another challenge I faced while my team was teaching was trying to

figure out whether or not the class understood the content I was teaching

them.

Q: What did you do to overcome these challenges?

A: What I did to overcome these challenges was that I tried to use hand

gestures and pictures so that the students could match the vocabulary they

were learning to a picture on the PowerPoint. I also tried to annunciate and

say the words slowly in order for them to get a grasp on the language.

Q: As a teacher, how did this activity simulate trying to instruct one or more ELL

students in your classroom? How did you use language in your instruction?

A: This activity was a great simulation of teaching to one or more ELLA

students in my classroom. It taught me how difficult it can be for both the

teacher and the student to teach the language correctly and accurately to

make sure they comprehend the information I am teaching. This activity

also taught me how to interact and keep the lesson fun so it isnt boring for

the ELL students. My group used Italian as our language and we decided

to use it as a cooking lesson on how to make a pizza in five steps. We

simply exchanged the English for Italian and then transferred our

information to a Kahoot! so that we could assess the students once we

were done teaching the lesson/concept.

Q: As part of the class, how can you relate this activity to the experience of

ELL students in an English speaking classroom?

A: I can relate this activity easily to the experience of an ELL student in

an English speaking classroom because if the teacher doesnt understand

the language or has difficulty speaking it, the student can be confused as I

was in some of the lessons. Teachers that teach ELL students need to use

many visual aides as well as practice the students native language to

deliver a fun, accurate, and correct lesson plan. As teachers we must make

lessons that every student can understand. Therefore, we must be able to

adapt to our students needs.

Q: Overall, what do you think was the purpose of this activity?

A: The purpose of this activity was to make us, as teachers, understand

how ELL students feel when they hear lessons in English instead of their

native language. The students feel confused or lost on learning the lesson

when they cant understand it or when they feel defeated. Therefore as

teachers, we have to be considerate of all students and make sure every

student understands the lesson being taught even if you have to teach it in

a different way.
