Lecture No. 1 INTRODUCTION TO CONSTRUCTION PROJECT MANAGEMENT

What is Construction Project
Management (CPM) and What
is a Project Manager?
Definition of Construction Project Management

The Project Management Institute (PMI) defines project management

as:

the art of directing and coordinating human and material resources

throughout the life of a project by using modern management
techniques to achieve predetermined objectives of scope, cost, time,
quality, and participating objectives.
Definition of Construction Project Management

Construction project management involves the planning, coordination,

and control over the various tasks involved in construction projects.
This could include different types of construction projects, like
agricultural, residential, commercial, institutional, industrial, heavy
civil, and environmental.
Who is the Project Manager?

Project management includes complex tasks that change dramatically

from project to project, and requires skills like strong communication,
knowledge of the building process, and problem solving.

For large projects, companies usually hires the expertise of a

Project Manager.
Who is the Project Manager?

Construction project managers help ensure the project is tracking along

to plan. They manage the project so it finishes on time and on budget,
and that their team completes it according to building codes, plans,
and specs. Other functions can include specifying scope, budget, and
schedules, selecting subcontractors and workers, developing
communication strategy for resolving conflicts, and more.
Who is the Project Manager?
The Construction Management Association of America, a US construction
management certification and advocacy body, says the 120 common
responsibilities of a construction manager fall into these seven categories:
Project management planning
Cost management
Time management
Quality management
Contract administration
Safety management
CM professional practice (managing the project team, defining roles and
responsibilities, etc).
Who is the Project Manager?

*Once the design phase has been completed, the construction project
manager will assign contractors to a project through a bidding process.
Contractors are chosen using various methods.
Contractors should be able to handle public safety, time management,
cost management, quality management, decision making, math,
drawings, and human resources.

Note: *does not apply to all cases

Class Activity

1) Name four other people you think are involved in a project (i.e
foreman/supervisor)
2) What do you think is their contribution for the project to be
completed successfully?
3) In your own opinion, who do you think is the most important
person in a project team, why?
Various Civil Engineering
Projects
Different Civil Engineering Projects

Construction has been evolving in the past centuries. Civil engineers

are involved from conception to physical realization of the project.

What are the different civil engineering projects?

Different Civil Engineering Projects
1. Building Project
Residential, town plannings ,
government quarters, academic
buildings (institutes, universities,
schools), hospital, temples,
government and private offices,
commercial complexes, recreational
building such as auditorium, cinema
hall, theaters, stores, warehouse,
light manufacturing plants.
Different Civil Engineering Projects

2. Transportation System
Bridges and flyover, roads, railways,
airport, urban mass transit system
such as mono railway and ropeways ,
town planning, port and harbour,
tunnel.
These are basic infrastructural
projects. Developing countries are
spending major of its budget on
these projects.
Different Civil Engineering Projects

3. Hydraulic Structures
Dam, barrage, canal, hydroelectric
power plant, tunnel,
embankment, flood control
system
Different Civil Engineering Projects

4. Fossil fuel and Nuclear power

Fossil fuel and Nuclear power

Different Civil Engineering Projects

5. Offshore structures
Tension Legged Platform
These are huge steel and concrete
structure in sea, used usually for
petroleum extraction.
Different Civil Engineering Projects

6. Water and waste project

Water treatment plant
Water distribution system - pipe,
water tanks
Sewage and storm water
collection system
Sewage treatment plants
Sewage disposal system
Different Civil Engineering Projects

7. Communication System
Transmission towers, TV Towers
Different Civil Engineering Projects

8. Industrial Structures
Petrochemical refineries, small
and large scale manufacturing
plants, silos, bunker, mine
developments.
Different Civil Engineering Projects

9. Space based and defence

structure
Army Cantonment, missile launch
pad, bunkers
Different Civil Engineering Projects

The various civil engineering projects can be classified based on

the intersection of knowledge and interaction with other disciplines.

They can be grouped as:

1. Building Projects
Building construction projects can be further divided into Residential Buildings and
commercial buildings
2. Heavy engineering Project
3. Industrial Projects
Different Civil Engineering Projects

Civil Engineer Project manager or construction manager has to interact

with various field of specializations depending upon the type of the
project
A project manager involved in the construction of hospital has to
interact with medical professional.

Similarly, the construction of petroleum, refinery involves the complex

interaction with chemical engineer, mechanical engineer, electrical
engineers.
Different Civil Engineering Projects

1. Building Construction Projects

During design phase, building design is coordinated by architect who works
with other engineering disciplines such as structure engineer, electrical
engineer whereas construction phase is coordinated by the civil engineers.
But group leader in the building projects is generally architect. Building
project can further be classified into

a) Residential Building
b) Commercial and other buildings.
Other building project produces variety of building ranging from hospital, temples, and
small stores to commercial office tower, theatres and cinema hall, government
buildings, recreational facilities, small schools to new institute or university.
Different Civil Engineering Projects
2. Heavy Engineering Construction
Heavy engineering construction includes primary infrastructural facilities
such as transportation system railways, road, bridges, mass transit system,
hydraulic structure (Dam, barrage, flood control system, hydro electric
power, irrigation system) water treatment and water supply system, waste
water treatment and its disposal, power line transmission.
Heavy engineering projects are mostly financed by government. These are
primarily infrastructural projects
Design as well as construction in these projects is the primary job of civil
engineers although inputs from other departments play an important role.
Heavy engineering project are highly equipment intensive and large
quantities of materials are used.
Different Civil Engineering Projects

3. Industrial Projects
These projects include power plants(fossil fuel, nuclear power), petroleum
refineries and petro-chemical plants, fertilizer plants, large steel plants,
heavy manufacturing plants, aircraft industry.
Industrial projects accounts for only 10 percent of the total construction
projects, but it requires highest level of engineering expertise from various
engineering disciplines, such as chemical, mechanical, electrical engineering.
Industrial constructions are very specialized job and consists of large
complex mechanical, electrical, instrumentation work.
Construction is dominated by skilled labour and quite labour intensive
compared to heavy engineering but large equipments are also used.
Class Activity

1) Select 2 of the different civil engineering projects, list down

atleast 3 persons/professionals involved.
2) Name a Philippine project and classify it based on the
intersection of knowledge and interaction with other disciplines
