Hi Netta,

There are some older posts on here that deal w ith w hat type of softw are he uses and a bit of
the process. I'll see if I can find them.

I can tell you ... for the new movie there w ere tw o studios ..One for the backgrounds (sw eet,
sw eet huge monitors) and another studio for the foreground images and animation. I looked
over one persons shoulder and they had a picture of a train stations (actual location) in one
corner of the screen and the rest of the huge screen w as the image rendered digitally. I w as
blow n aw ay at the level of detail being meticulously put into each image. It definitely show s in
the w ork. Anyw ay ... I'll see w hat I can find from the old posts W elcome to the Forums.

Unfortunately it's all in Japanese but it tells pretty much all you need by the picture.

Interesting parts are at 2:18, where Shinkai-san shows the glow effect he likes to use and
explains that for this one feature he decided to try to convey the "warm feeling" he wanted
the scene to have only by the painting and color shades - like it used to be done before in

Another one is at 2:55 where he explains that he decided to model this particular scene in
3D because he "didn't have the confidence that he can make a scene like that in a realistic

3. determining the color scheme (and shadows and stuff)
4. final coloring, (effects)

I guess the production process for the bigger works is a little different because of the many
different departments working on the piece but nevertheless this provides a nice insight.

I like the link w hich you shared. I have checked some other links also those related w ith this
