POOLE HIGH SCHOOL'S ADMISSION POLICY AT 12+ 2008-9

Students will be admitted at the age of 12+ without reference to ability or aptitude within Poole’s
Equal Preference/Ranking system. Parents also have the opportunity to apply for a place within the
"Expressly Academic Class" (10% of intake). These students are selected on the basis of
ability/aptitude and are required to take NFER Tests. The number of intended admissions for the year
commencing 1st September 2008 will be 325.
The policy for admission to Poole High School is that students are admitted to the school in the
following priority order:-
1. Students who fall within “the looked after children grouping DfES Code of Practice” i.e. in
the care of the local authority.
2. Students who have been selected during the registration period for the "Expressly Academic
Class". This grouping is limited to 10% of the school's intake (maximum 32 students).
Places are allocated to the 32 who receive the highest marks in tests which are held on ****
November 2007.
3. Students who have applied for a place in September 2008 and who have not been selected into
the “Expressly Academic 10%”.
N.B. Parents will also wish to note that any offer of a place will be withdrawn where either the
application is subsequently found to be fraudulent or intentionally misleading and results in a
child with a stronger claim being denied a place or where a parent has not responded to the
offer within a reasonable time (DfES Code of Practice 1.45)
Students with Statements of Special Educational Needs or other Special Educational Need:
The Admission Number of 325 may be reduced to accommodate students with a Statement of Special
Educational Needs in accordance with current national regulations making this the over-riding
priority criteria.
The Admission Authority will consider applications for a place in a year group other than a pupil’s
correct age providing adequate supporting material is included at the time of application. The
supporting material and criteria to be adopted is a stated in the local authority section of this booklet.
Senior School (6th Form) Admissions (16+)
The Admission Number for external applicants is 30 places which is in addition to those students
already attending Poole High School (Year 11) and wishing to continue into the Senior School.
The minimum entry requirement corresponds to Foundation level courses where applicants must
provide written evidence from their previous school of a commitment to further study. An offer of a
place in the Senior School does not automatically provide access to specific subjects.
Parents have the right of Appeal if a place is not available.
Over-subscription
Where there are spaces available but a greater number of preferences, students will be offered places in
the following order:
1. students who live in the area historically served by the school.
2. a sibling attending the school at the time of admission.
3. students who live closest to the school as defined as defined by the shortest safe walking distance.
“Sibling” & “ Distance measurement” & “Home Address” & “Separated Parents
In Criterion 2, “sibling” means a full brother or sister, and a half brother or sister, adoptive brother or
sister and non-blood related children who live with married or cohabiting parents in the same
household.
In Criterion 3, proximity is the distance measured using a Geographical Information System. The
Governors have adopted a home address definition as shown for Poole LEA in this booklet.
In Criteria 2 & 3, Poole High has adopted the same criteria as other Poole Admission Authorities with
regard to “Home Address” ,“Separated Parents”, “Multiple Births” and Blocks of Flats”. Details are
given within the Local Authority’s Admission Policy within this booklet.
Waiting Lists
Poole High School maintains waiting lists for Years 8 and 9. Parents are requested to register their
son/daughter in each September respectively. The waiting lists are maintained for one term and if
places are available the over-subscription criteria are applied.
