THE IMPORTANCE OF KUMBABHISHEKAM
In the previous issue of The Astrological eMagazine
we understood the meaning of certain aspects of
Kumbhabhishekam. We conclude with this issue.
Khadasthapanam
The important event in Kumbabhishekam is the
Kadasthapanam. This means installing the Kalasa.
The Kalasas will be made out of gold, silver, copper, or
clay. There are strict rules for the making of the
Kalasas. The Kalasas made according to the rules
will be energized with the mantras and shown to the
Agni. Then they will be pasted over with red clay and
tied criss-cross, all around, with thin cotton threads.
Then they will be filled with water from rivers, or
from fountains. Then a bunch of mango leaves will
be inserted in the mouth of the Kalasas and a coconut
will be placed over them to hold them. The Kumbhas
will also be filled with navaratnas, gold, silver, and
navadanyas. The Kumbha will be considered as the
body of the deity for which the kumbabhishekam is
conducted.
Ashtabhandanam
Kumbabhishekam is known and called as the
ashtabhandana maha kumbabhishekam. The idols
of Gods placed on the pedestals must stand firm and
not become shaky anytime. For this, a special paste is
manufactured made of eight specific herbs mixed with
wood lac, limestone powder, resin, red ochre, bees wax
and butter. The paste is formed into long rolls about
two cm thick and applied directly around the base of
the idol, so that the cemented joints become watertight.
This process is believed to keep the idol rejuvenated
for a period of 12 years. When the Bandhanam

is performed with gold (Swarnabandhanam), the
rejuvenating power of the deity is believed to last for
a period of 100 years. This is called ashtabhandana.
The 'Ashtabhandana' paste is pliable like rubber.
Through repeated interactions with abhisheka
dravyams - materials used to bathe the idol during
daily worship like water, milk, buttermilk, sandal paste
and oils - and atmospheric oxidants, the paste loses
its flexibility, becomes rigid and gets riddled with a
lot of fissures. Through these fissures, the abhisheka
dravyams percolate and attack the Yantra embedded
under the Peetham, obliterating the Bijaaksharamantras
-- mantras of sacred syllables (Bija) -- that are inscribed
on the Yantra, and this is believed to contribute to the
lowering of the pranic spiritual power of the deity with
the passage of time.
Mihutsamgrahanam
This means collecting soil. During kumbabhishekam
and event will be performed called Anguraarpanam.
This means making sprouts from seeds. The earth will
be dug out and placed in small mud cups and watered
and navadanyas sown thereon to sprout into shoots.
This is called mihutsamgrahanam.
On the appointed day and at an auspicious time, the
Kumbha is bathed with the charged and sanctified
holy waters in the sacrificial pot and, by a mystic
process, These pranic powers trickle down a silver
wire and enter the deity installed inside the sanctum
sanctorum of the temple. The deity, which was
until then only a granite sculptured stone image, is
believed to get transformed into a vibrant and vivid
living representation of the Deva, with innate beatitude,
grace and grandeur, conferring divine blessings on all
devotees.

Hindu temples typically have Kalasa at the top of
temple towers. This Kalasa in form of inverted pot
is one of the prominent symbol of temples. Periodic
renewal of temple is called kumbabhishekam centres
around Kalasas, when elaborate rituals are performed
along with renewing the temple's physical structures.
Most Kalasa are made of metal and some of stone.View
of Gopuram (Temple Tower) is one of the important
rituals of Hindu worship along with view of Kodimaram
(Temple flag mast). Elaborate Gopurams were built as
worship of sky above; these Gopurams were topped
with ornamental Kalasas. Some temples have four
entrance towers, which protect about 75,000 sq meters
on all four sides. However, this is approximate numbers.
Once in 12 years, the grains in the temple Kalasas are
refilled and changed during a festival. Some people
VAKYA AND DRIG-GANITHA
All of us know that there are at least two different types
of Panchangas followed in the southern states of India.
One is based on the Vakya system and the other on the
Drigganitha. Even though it has been emphasized over
several times that, it is time for the vaakya enthusiasts
to make way to Drigganitha system not only for the
horoscopic but also for religious observations as
well, the Vakya enthusiasts are in no mood to relent.
Even now, especially in Tamilnadu, many follow
only this Vakya Panchangas for observances of all
festivals in temples. Even the transit dates of planets
into raasis are reckoned only in accordance with the
Vakya calculations. It can be seen that the temples
in Tamilnadu observe the transit dates of planets
- especially Saturn, Jupiter, and the Nodes - only
according to the Vakya calculations. It has now been
proved beyond any doubt that the vaakya calculations
do not reflect the correct positions of planets. Any of
those derived elements of the panchanga, will be true
only for the weekday. That is to say that the Vakya
Panchangas give only erroneous information about
the exact ending moments of Tithi, Nakshatra, Yoga
and Karana.
Drig means sight. Drigganitha is the calculation that
agrees with the actual observational positions of planets
and the discernible phenomena like eclipses, the rising
and setting of the planets and the like. Undoubtedly,
the calculation process of planetary positions requires a
lot of expertise, industry and time. Perhaps, to simplify
the efforts in the calculations, our ancients who were
adepts in complicated calculations, devised a simpler
method and that is the Vaakya system. In this system,
the calculations are based on certain prefabricated
tables, derived from the other deeper principles of

claim that this kalasa will act as a lightning conductor
however; there is no scientific basis for that claim. To
prove that claim is wrong we can take the incident
of breaking of kalasa at the Tanjore Big Temple due
to lightning. This incident happened on November
28, 2010, when lightning hit one of the Kalasas on
"Rajarajan thiruvayil" and it got damaged. By the way,
the "real" lightning conductor, which was placed in
another gate (according to Archaeological Survey of
India sources), helped to minimize the damage.
Kumbabhishekam is the process of performing the
poojas to the idol deity and transforming it to a powerful
deity with all the positive vibrations surrounding it. It
also is the process of restoring the depleted power of
the deity in the temple.

for a fixed period of time. These tables, given in some
terse sentences, went under the nomenclature of vakyas
to facilitate easy memorization and applications. What
we follow now as Vakya Panchangas are those prepared
on the basis of these vakyas formulated some centuries
earlier.
It will be interesting to note that the expertise of our
ancient astronomers, in applied astronomy was so
profound. They were able to detect even intricate
inaccuracies of the earlier texts. They were able even to
rectify the thesis of Aryabhatta just within two centuries
of its formulation. At a conference of astronomers of
Kerala, held at Thirunaavaaya, (a small temple town,
situated 8 km from Tirur, in Malappuram District,
Kerala, during the Maha-Magha festival around, 683
A.D., they decided on certain reforms to Aryabhateeya.
This reformed system is popularly known as the
Parahita. Grahacharanibhandhanam is a work of
Haridattacharya, in three chapters with more than
100 Slokas. Another work Mahamarganibhandhana,
attributed to him is not available. These two are
considered as the source for the Parahita Ganitha
Paddhati, followed by later authors. Haridattacharya
is supposed to have lived between 650 and 700 A.D. It
appears that Parahita system was adopted in the regions
of Tamilnadu, without much delay. The vakya system
of calculations is based on this.
In the course of time, after centuries of adaptation
of these vaakya methods of calculations, astrological
savants found that the methods employed for
computation of planetary positions were not in
agreement with actual observations. It was in or around
1430 A.D., Vadasseri Parameswaran Namboodiri, a
contemporary and perhaps a disciple of Sangamagrama

Madhava, came out with his refined scheme of
planetary computations known as the Drigganitha
system. Noticing many discrepancies in the earlier
computational methods and following Munjjalaka
and Sripati, he evolved a new computational method.
He was the one who revised the Parahita system of
astronomical calculations and established the new
Drigganitha Paddhati. It is said that this indefatigable
scholar toiled for over 55 years, lying on the banks of
Neelanadi or Bharatappuzha during the nights and
observing the Nakshatras to compile his Drigganitha. It
is told that when Parameswaran Namboodiri showed his
findings to Sangamagrama Madhava, the latter advised
him to confine them to astronomical computations
alone. That is how the old system was continued, for
some time, for calculating Tithi, Nakshatra, Muhurtha,
etc., and the new system was adopted for calculating
the geocentric longitudes of planets and the solar
and lunar eclipses. The Drigganitha of Vadasseri
occupied a cherished place and was mostly relied
upon, in preparing almanacs, though later Sri Puliyur
Purushottaman Namboodiripad and some other
scholars came out with new methods. In short, these
efforts prove the scientific approach in computing
the measurement of time. In his Siddhanta Deepika,
Parameswaran had crosschecked the planetary
longitudes of his Drigganitha calculations with those
of the Parahita, for over 40 years and recorded the
differences. This Siddhanta Deepika is the commentary
on Mahabhaskareeyabhashya of Govindaswami.
Neelakanta Somayaaji in his Bhasya for Aryabhateeya
refers to Siddhanta Deepika.
It was found later that Vakya Panchangas could not
predict the eclipses with precision and their calculation
resulted in factual inaccuracies. But that did not
deter those advocates of that system in pursuing and
publishing them. However, they started calculating the
circumstances of eclipses, by adopting the Drigganitha
and incorporated them in their Vaakya Panchangas,
which however, for other calculations like duration
tithi, Nakshatra etc., were relying only on those
traditional vaakyas.
One may ask whether our ancient astronomers were
not capable of predicting the eclipses precisely.
Unbelievably, even without any sophisticated
instruments that are available to our modern
astronomers, our ancients were capable of predicting
them very accurately that has won the admiration of
our modern scholars. Surya Siddhanta, Siddhanta
Sironmani and many other texts emphasize the need
of computing the correct positions of planets that
have to necessarily agree with observations. Later
authors have also emphasized the need for periodical

corrections for the vakya tables and prescribed the
norms for applying them. However, due to various
reasons, such instructions were given a go by or
neglected altogether and that only made the further
calculations erroneous without any agreement with the
actual observational positions of the planets.
VYDRUTI AND VYATIPATA
Of the Nityayogas, we have a mention of Vaidhruthi
and Vyatipata in the Panchanga. Liberally, Vydhruti
may mean concealing or inescapable and Vyatipata
falling from standards. As mentioned earlier, these
are the two important of the nine forbidden Yogas
eschewed for the conduct of auspicious functions. They
are Vyaghata, Parigha, Vajra, Vyatipata, Dhriti, Ganda,
Atiganda, Shula, Vishkumbha, which are generally
spurned for auspicious events. Nevertheless, there are
several relaxations. Vydhruti pervades from 34640 to
360 and Vyatipata from 21320 to 22640 of the sum
of the longitudes of the Sun and the Moon. Vydhruti
and Vyatipata punyakala are observed on the day when
the yogas prevail for 1 hours or more, when Sraddhas
are performed by the astute. These form part of the
Shannavati (96 Sraddhas ordained for a householder).
Considering the astronomical implications, the Sayana
Vydhruti and Vyatipata days are also observed. With
added Ayanamsa, for both the longitudes of the Sun
and the Moon, the Sayana Vydhruti and Vyatipata
will occur, a couple of days ahead of the Nirayana
computations.
Regarding the forbidden yogas some say the noted
number of Ghatis is to be avoided in the end of the
yoga while others hold that the same quantum has to
be avoided at the beginning and at the end of the yoga.
Vidhiratna recommends the avoidance of only 5 ghatis
at the beginning.
According to Sripathi only the first quarter of
these forbidden yogas are detestable. However, the
whole of Vyatipata and Vydhruti and the first half
of Parigha must be avoided. The malefic yogas are
1/6/9/10/13/15/17/19/27, namely Vishkumbha, Atiganda,
Soola, Ganda, Vyaghata, Vajra, Vyatipata, Parigha
and Vydhruti. Some add Dhriti (8th) also to the list of
malefic yogas while others find no harm in accepting
it and so they include it in the list of benefic yogas.
The Benefic Yogas are 2/3/4/5/7/11/12/14/16/18/2
0/21/22/23/24/25/26. They are Preeti, Ayushman,
Sowbhaagya, Shodana, Sukarma, Dhruva, Harshana,
Siddhi, Varian, Siva, Siddha, Sadhya, Shubha, Sukla,
Brahma, and Indira. Vydhruti and Vyatipata must be
definitely avoided, as they are more harmful amongst
the malefic yogas.

Barry Rosen: These generalizations from the scriptures need fine tuning which is why I was asking. My mother
had Jupiter in the 5th exalted in Cancer and lost her first child.
Frank Vazquez: Ive been taught this dictum has been interpreted incorrectly. It means that if the karaka for a
house is in a bad position (i.e. say Moon is in debility in 7th with Mars and Rahu), then the 4th house is greatly
hurt. If Moon is in 4th house, it is quite good (considering other factors constant) and this bears out in my

experience, particularly a planet in digbala like that.
It makes very little logical sense to me why a karaka
for a house would hurt it. That is like a house lord
destroying its own house, though karaka is an even
more all encompassing level.
Barry Rosen: Thanks Frank. This is why I asked. I see
mixed results with it all the time and it does not make
sense to me either but sometimes it is right on with
Mars in the 3rd or Jupiter in the 5th.
Frank Vazquez: Barry Rosen, Mars in 3rd house can
bring a strong will, perhaps too much sometimes. Id
be curious what the other factors that are involved
when you feel it is working (lord, house itself, aspects,
Arudha, etc.)
Barry Rosen: That is what I was getting at trying to
develop a list of specific qualities of things that are a
bit out of balance. May be the rest of the group can
help. I have not thought about them that deeply and
some of them are difficult, like Jupiter in the 9th house
to fanatically religious? Moon in the 4th house too
attached too mother? Have to get creative here. I
also want to do this with badaka as they have positive
manifestations but psychological and emotional
challenges.
Shankar Nath Kapoor: Barry Rosen, my studies have
led me to consider this aspect. I agree with you that it
is essential to consider in the light of birth chart as well
as concerned divisional chart. Such dictums must be
seen in relation to placements of bhava lord as well as
other planets in chart itself for no planet alone could
materially affect any bhava. Further, it must be seen
in the light of strength of bhava lord, in the light of
placement in kendra or trikona; its conjunction with or
aspect by yogakaraka or other karaka with bhava lord,
or bhava lord is hemmed between them or by malefics,
and strength of its rasi, nakshatra and navamsa
dispositers and relations, conjunction and, aspects etc.

with the cusp of the bhava is a material factor. There
could be harm to or loss of happiness from relation
indicated by the bhava, without affecting much other
karakatwas of the karaka planet.
Marie-jose Veilleux: My brother has Jupiter in the
5th Scorpio. His wife had a lot of difficulty getting
pregnant, it took 11 years and she had to do artificial
insemination. But finally, he had a son and a daughter,
they are happy now.

your brothers wifes 5th house?
Marie-jose Veilleux: No, I dont have her time of birth,
but she has Moon in Aries, so Leo with Mars in the
5th from Moon aspected by Sun, Saturn and Venus.
Simona Mesic: I have retrograde Jupiter in 5th house
and have one son. He came quite late in my life, but
no problems getting pregnant. He is very spiritual and
true blessing for me.
Shankar Nath Kapoor: Apart from delay retrograde,
combust and debilitated Karaka should also reduce
or harm happiness from the relation indicated by
such Karaka. Learned friends may check it and
enlighten us.
Pete Dawson: According to Dr. B.V. Raman, a strong
benefic in lagna, 3rd or 5th house whilst simultaneously
aspecting the 9th forms Bhagya Yoga, which the classics
tell us makes one extremely fortunate, pleasure
loving and rich. My wife has Jupiter in 5th Scorpio,
conjunct the lagnesha Moon and in mutual glance with
Venus. She has two highly intelligent, respectful and
wonderful kids.
Balaraman Suresh: I have Venus in 7th house, exalted
in Rasi chart but debilitated in Virgo Navamsa. I
divorced despite having Malavya Yoga and Hamsa
Yoga. The Karako Bhava Nashaaya principle does
work for me.
Marcia Kalika: Hart Defouw taught karakas (you
mentioned) hurts human indications, i.e. Moon in 4th
house is difficult for mother but not peace of mind or
housing. Jupiter in 5th house is good for mantra japa
but can hurt child. Not detrimental but there may be
something that is difficult. Venus in 7th house can
be difficult for partner. The partner may have health
problems or the natives may have very high passions
which brings inappropriate partners. Just some issue
that is problematic.
Freedom Cole: Karka Bhavo Nashaya - I do not
interpret this as the karaka in its own house destroys
the house. There is no sva or anything indicating that
translation/interpretation. I have heard about 5 or 6
other interpretations that all seem to work better. With
all translations taken into account, I just pay attention
to the karaka and its status and placement and nature
according to lagna and amsas.

f there is someone in India or in the world of politics who is most
loved and most hated too, who is both an enigma and a person of
rare charisma and who is known as a fighter and a winner too in the
male dominated and ruthless arena of politics, it is none other than Dr
J. Jayalalithaa, the Chief Minister of Tamilnadu who is under medical
treatment at the time of writing this article. Even in her illness, she
became the eye of the storm with her baiters churning out controversies
on the one side and making a beeline to the hospital to enquire about
her health on the other. In all this she didnt utter a word and it is not
even known whether she is aware of what is going on around her while
she is recuperating in the hospital. Such was the life of Jayalalithaa
whose life seems to be at the mercy of destiny.

Born on 24th February 1948 at 2-34 PM in Melukote in Karnataka, her

tryst with destiny started soon after her birth. She lost her father when she
was 2 years old. Though she was extremely good at studies, she could not
continue her studies beyond school, as she had to pursue acting career to
make up for the sagging finances of her family. A reluctant actress she
was, but fame and money came her way. In her 23rd year she lost mother
who was her only reliable guide and friend. But there was no looking
back in her career till her early thirties when she was said to have faced
emotional stress. Though she wanted to get into seclusion she was brought into politics by her film world mentor
and former CM of Tamilnadu,
Dr M. G. Ramachandran (MGR).

From then onwards till now it had

been a tough and jerky ride for
her but she managed to keep her
detractors at bay and rise up like
a phoenix and high in popularity
among the people of Tamilnadu.
Though she was arrested and tried
for a range of corruption cases, she
managed to get acceptance and
admiration from the people and
create a record of sorts in beating
incumbency and continue in power
in consecutive terms in the recent
elections. Her horoscope is worth

Some Basic Features
1. Three planets namely Mercury, the lagna
lord, Mars, the 6 th lord and Jupiter, lord of
7th and 10th houses are in the same degrees
(2 degree + minutes) which happen to be
benefic Shashtyamsas. This means these planets

anyone an enemy proactively, she inherited the

of her enemies, she has come to such a level

The Transit of Saturn and its Constellation
In the birth chart of King Bhumibol Saturn is situated
in the sign of Scorpio at 17 35. The constellation
(nakshatra) is Jyeshta 1 st pada in the navamsa of
Sagittarius. It is very interesting to note that on 13th
October 2016 @ 1552' Saturn was transiting Scorpio
at 1830 in the constellation of Jyesta 1st pada again in
the Navamsa of Sagittarius. This indicates a complete
cycle of Saturn in his third round. The constellation
Jyeshta is indicative of Lord Indra, who is the king
of the Deva Loka. He is normally seen with a white
elephant Iravatha
The sakthi of Jyeshta is the power to rise, conquer,
and gain courage in battle. The Kingdom of Thailand

The Death in Divine Contemplation
On the day of death, the king had the transit of
Moon with Ketu in the lagna Aquarius. A very rare
phenomena happened on the day when the soul of His
Highness King left his body, whereby the lagna, Moon,
and Ketu were very near the rising degree.

Life Events
1. Father died when she was 2 years
of age in Ketu dasa Saturn
antar dasa. Sun, the karaka for
father is in the 9th house thereby
spoiling the pithru bhava. The
12th lord from the 9th house is
Saturn. When Saturn was in the
7th (maraka) house in transit while its sub period
was running, her father died.
2. Her Mother died when she was 23 years of age
in 1971. At the time she was running Venus
Dasa Ketu antar dasa. Venus is the 2nd lord to
4th house (mother). It is in the 7th house while
Ketu is placed in the 2nd house to 4th house. Both
Venus and Ketu are marakas for the 4th house of
mother.
3. Rahu in 11th and Mars (karaka for siblings) in
the 3rd spoil the scope of brothers. Though she
had an elder brother, she was not in good terms
with him. Ever since her Rahu dasa started, she
has lost contact with most of her relatives. Rahu
is in the 6th from the 6th house which stands for
maternal uncles.
4. Jayalalithaa remained a spinster and this is
confirmed with badhaka Jupiter sitting in the
7th house and 7th sub cuspal lord Moon joining
Mars and aspected by Rahu. The unique
feature of her life is that she came to be called
as Amma by people and she herself expressed
that she is most satisfied when called like

film debut in Venus dasa only. The noticeable
feature is that it all happened in the antar dasa
of Saturn. Saturn the 8th lord also happens to be
the 9th lord.
6. Her political debut happened in Moon dasa.
Once again the antar dasa was that of Saturn.
Though she became the CM for the first time
in Mars dasa, Rahu dasa dominated in her rise
to power. Then again Saturn antar dasa was in
place whenever she faced rises.
7. Rahu in its own antar dasa did not help her
as she was arrested for corruption charges on
December 7th, 1996 in Rahu dasa - Rahu antar
dasa. But she won the elections at that time and
took charge as CM without even contesting the
election in Saturn antar dasa of Rahu dasa. She
got a reprieve from the charges and contested
the elections and won to become the CM in the
same Saturn antar dasa. It must be noted that
when she was arrested in 1996 in Rahu- Rahu
period, transit Saturn and Ketu were in 12 th
to natal Rahu. Jupiter and Mars were in natal
positions. So there was a clash of aspects with
Mars (6L) aspecting 12th from natal Rahu and
Jupiter aspecting natal Rahu by 5th aspect.
8. After this her political popularity kept rising
throughout Rahu dasa and then came Jupiter,
the badhaka dasa. The period of Jupiter-
Jupiter - Rahu she was sentenced to jail on 27 th
September 2014. At that time, Ketu was in the
10th house from lagna and Jupiter was exalted
in the 12th house to her moon sign. Mars was
transiting the 6th house from lagna which was
4th from the Moon sign. While everyone thought
that her political life was over, came Saturn
antar dasa and she came out on bail. Two days
after Saturn antar dasa started she got the bail.

Jupiter is the 10 th lord
besides being the 7 th lord
and badhaka. Saturn is the
Dharma lord besides being
the ashtama lord. So these
2 planets come within the
bracket of Dharma- karma
lords. They are capable of giving rise to dharma-
karmadhipathi yoga in their periods. But they are in
6-8 axis in her horoscope. Such a position cannot give
benefic results under normal circumstances. But there
are exceptions with reference to two lagnas namely
Aries and Gemini.
According to Jataka Chandrika of Kalidasa, when the
9th and 10th lords also happen to be lords of 8th or 11th
houses, this yoga does not arise if they have connection.
Sambhanda maathrENa na yOgam labhathE narah
says verse 21. For Jayalalithaa, her lagna is Gemini
and 9th lord Saturn happens to be 8th lord too. Similar
is the case with Aries lagna for which Saturn, the 10th
lord also happens to be the 11th lord.
There are 2 commentaries for this verse. One says that
there should be no connection with the kona lord for
the 8th and 11th lord. 9th and 5th are konas. For Aries
lagna, Saturn (10th and 11th lord) and Jupiter (9th lord)
must not be connected with the 5th lord Sun to confer
this yoga in their dasa- antar dasa.
For Gemini lagna (of Jayalalithaa), Saturn (8th lord and
9th lord) and Jupiter must not have connection with the
5th lord Venus. If they have, this dharma karmadhipathi
yoga would not occur. Another commentary for the
same verse (above) says the 9th and 10th lord for Aries
and Gemini must not have any connection with each
other for this yoga to occur.
In Jayalalithaas horoscope the sign dispositor or
star dispositor of Jupiter or Saturn is not Venus,
the 5th lord as per the first commentary. Jupiter and
Saturn are not in connection with each other as per
the 2nd commentary. This has conferred the Dharma
Karmadhipathi yoga in
the dasa of one and in
the antar dasa of the
other.

has this rare combination. Whenever Saturn antar
dasa ran, it has given beneficial results and conferred
raja yoga though some element of 8th lordship effect
was found. In the recent event of getting sentence in
Jupiter dasa Jupiter antar dasa (badhaka lord) she got
succour soon after Saturn antar dasa had started. She
won the case and became CM again. Though the case
had gone for appeal, the Saturn antar dasa is likely to
save her and regain the Raja yoga.
Health Issue
But within this time, another
event happened. Soon after
the Rahu pratyantara dasa
started in Jupiter Saturn

serious health defect and

Rahu pratyantara dasa
could give rise to poisonous or
toxin related health issues. The
hospital bulletin also shows
that she is suffering from a
toxic infection. She is also
suffering from lung infection. At the time of this health
issue, her 8th lord Saturn was transiting natal 6th house
which is 4th house from her Moon sign. Though Saturn
is lord of auspicious 9th house, it would show its malefic
nature as 8th lord when a malefic pratyantara dasa is
running. But Saturn cannot kill her though it qualifies
as a maraka by its occupation of the 2nd house. Saturn,
the ayush karaka is aspecting the 8th house of longevity
and therefore it would not kill the native in its antar
dasa.
Beside this there must be some trigger factors in transit
for a serious illness to take place. On the day she was
admitted Mars was transiting her birth degrees of
Jupiter, the dasa lord and the badhaka for her. Mars is
her 6th and 11th lord - both inauspicious. The navamsa
dispositor of Mars is Mars itself. Mars is in the star of
Ketu. Therefore Mars and Ketu would play a role in
causing her serious health conditions.
By November 1st, Mars would be moving into the natal
8th house and will be receiving 3rd aspect of 8th lord
Saturn from the 6th house from lagna. This is a case of
Nija or inherent disease that Prasna Marga discusses
about. One redeeming feature is that Jupiter is in 2 nd
from Moon sign and in a sign of robust sarvashtaka

personel selection is of paramount importance and has

which needs so much industrial upliftment now more
than ever before.
It is time now for India to welcome influences that will
go to better her circumstances and put her at par with
other advanced nations for shaking with all her might
the stupor and pernicious self-complecency which so
long cast an inert spell on her vast life.
Man power of India must be profitably engaged in
order to reap the richest harvest. In order that each
man must be placed in an avocation most suitable

How many tragedies were enacted on earth and are
still being done for trying the square peg in the round
hole. In this connection it comes to our mind naturally
enough how parents are eager, sometime inexorable
to impose their ideals of profession. If one happens to
have an engineer father, himself with an aptitude of
poetry, imagine the eternal conflict of irreconcilable
tendencies seeking their expression in their approved
lines. We know how many of the eminent poets were
humiliated in their early life. The great Indian Scientist
Dr. Meghanath Saha, in his earlier years was compelled
by his guardian to work in a grocers shop which his
forefathers had been carrying on generation after
generation. The boy Meghnath with his burning zeal for
knowledge and science could not sit under the weight
of parental oppression and found his way out and
carbed out through misfortune and stern opposition his
glorious career. But this sort of invincible personality is
few and far between. The average man dwindles away
and pines for ever when the flowering of what is best
in them is thwarted and their personality twisted to ill
adapt to a situation which demands qualities wanting
in him or which is barely uncongenial.
To appreciate the operation of mental tests one needs to
have a general idea about their validity and reliability.
Each and every mental test is neither valid nor reliable
unless and until it satisfies certain set conditions. Every
particular test underwent a wide a administration over
tens of thousands of cases and a series of complicated
statistical treatment before it emerged as a true
measure of any mental trait desired. As a matter of

children of varying intellect and callibre, the responses

of individuals and the majority distribute themselves
along the scores ranging between the two extremes,
the middle scores being made by the highest number of
scorers. This under ideal situation can be represented
by a normal curve of the following diagram.
Thus if the average success of a particular test has been
ascertained it is easy to place any individual above,
below or on the average, by carefully administering
the test on him and calculating the measure of success
he achieved.
By applying a series of tests this, .the actual mental age

of children of 14 years of age. Now if a child submits
himself to these tests and his scores corresponds to the
average score, he is ranked in the status of the average,
provided his chronological age is about 14. Bu in case
he is older than 14 and fails to make corresponding
scores of his age, he will be places below average and
when he is younger but makes score similar to that
the average.
Psychologists calculates an intelligence quotient tor
purposes of comparisons, which is nothing but the ratio
of the mental age to the chronological age.

Having given the reader a simple conception of the
principle of mental tests we will -now proceed to a
bird's eye view of the different tests in practice.
Attempts have been made to make a thorough survey
of the entire personality o an individual under test
situation. The level of intelligence is ascertained as it
is of prime importance in different avocations of life.
The measuring instrument in this case is the
L. and M. forms of individual intelligence tests as
recommended in Terman-Merrill revision of Binet
intelligence and other set of tests. The detailed
description of this series of tests and other tests
mentioned below is too lengthy to be discussed here.
The basis on which this battery of tests rests is the
assumption that the intelligence of a person reveals
itself first in his capacity of grasping relations, of
forming associations, of retaining learnt materials etc:,
and secondly in his ability to face actual problems of
life, to adapt his behaviour to the demands of different
situations etc.
Next a search is made to discover any special aptitude
in an individual. In almost every vocation some special
abilities are needed. Thus for an engineer, proficiency
in dealing with tools and implements is essential.
Psychologists, by the method of job analysis have
succeeded in shifting out the different factors traceable
in an efficient performance of a particular work.
Thus tests have been devised to detect and measure
mechanical ability, manual ability, manual dexterity,
constructional ability, musical ability and so forth.
Now it has been seen that persons possessing a high
degree of intelligence and special abilities, sometimes
failed to cope with the demands of avocations for which
they were quite fit otherwise. The solution of this
problem is not far to seek. It is the emotional make-up
of man which comes into the picture. The intellectual
and the emotional nature must be in a happy union to
secure complete success. The temperamental fitness
cannot be too much emphasised. The unconscious
mind must be explored to unearth the inhibiting or
facilitatingtendencies which make for success and
failure.
Tests have been, accordingly, designed to determine the
nature of an individual's temperament. Some names
of these tests are (i). Subjective paired questions,

Palmistry Titbits
T he five elements of nature panchabhuta fire,
There are many to-day who deplore and look
down upon palmistry as an unauthenticated and
unfounded science. Among them are also some who
take a great delight in making unsavoury criticism on
palmists and palmistry with the result that many a
Cheirosophist is reluctant to release the fruits of his
labours to the benefit of mankind. But those of us
who are convinced of the infallibility of
the science of palmistry can tell those
critics what Newton retorted to Hally,
- "I have studied these things ; you
have not."
During the last twelve years,
I have had the opportunity of
examining the palms of over
seven hundred and fifty persons
of different castes, creeds, sizes,
colours and temperaments and the
gleanings from my diary may be of
interest to students of Palmistry and
to others interested in the subject.
As an Amateur Astro-Palmist
I have been able to delineate the
mysterious signs and seals that
God has caused to appear on the
hands of all the sons of men with a fair amount
of accuracy and that in some cases I have been
able to give the very time and day of important events.
The entries made in my Log Book and the letters of
appreciation I have received from my subjects are
sufficient testimony of the truth of this science.
I shall now give a symposium of my diary entries under
the following headings in order of sequence Profession,
Finance and Marriage-the trinity in unity which makes
life in this world a veritable Paradise.
Profession
The line rising from the commencement of the Life
Line and proceeding across the palm to terminate at
the mount of the Moon, Mercury, Sun or Saturn as
the case may be, is called the HEAD LINE, which

signifies a man's walk of life, power of the Will and his
adaptability to circumstances.
This line should be free from any cuts and hairy lines
and also supported by a fairly good Life line for a
subject to follow a good profession. In most cases
that came within my purview, this line had curved at
the percussion and with islands at the beginning of
the line. These subjects were not able to follow their
natural aptitudes and moulded their careers
according to their own whims and fancies.
These were found to be oppressive and
domineering and subject to constant attacks
of neuralgia and other diseases of the head.
Those with a chained or tasseled Head line
were found to be irresolute, inconsistent
and unfaithful that they were like
rolling stones that gathered no
moss. These have been constantly
changing their professions with
idea of bettering their prospects, but
only for their regret.
Those with a fine Head line extending
towards the mount of Moon and with a
straight line proceeding up the mount of
Jupiter from the junction of the Head and Life
lines and uncut by any subsidiary lines were found to
be having a magnetic personality, strong. Will Power
(lying in a dormant state in most cases - undeveloped)
holding professions of some standing. They were
also interested in occult sciences, most of them being
interested in hypnotism. mesmerism, etc. They had also
a tinge of philosophy in their make-up.
When this line joined the Life Line at the
commencement, sloped downwards and forked at the
end one branch running up to the mount of Moon
and the other to the mount of Mars, the subjects were
found to be Journalists, authors, who took a delight in
profound literary researches and who also possessed
highly imaginative minds. The termination of the Head
line at the mount of Saturn, the subjects were found
to be musicians, who were reserved in their habits and
taciturn by nature.

Summing up the importance of this line, it may be
said that the Head Line and the Life Line should be
well-placed, uncut by subsidiary lines for a subject to
prosper either in profession or business.
Finance
Finance comes next in importance to Profession in a
person's life. The success line or more popularly known
as the Line of Apollo and the Fate Line or otherwise
known as the line of Destiny or Fortune should be
considered.
It has been found that a straight line of success always
promises a steady flow of wealth, success in all matters
appertaining to Finance and increase of Fortune. It
further illumines the personality of the subject to a
great extent.
The fact may be stressed that all depends on the
position of this line, as it may rise from various parts
of the palm. Its best position is when it rises from the
wrist to the base of the third finger. Only in one stray
case I saw this line rising an inch above the wrist. The
subject was successful in anything he attempted and
possessed a very charming and magnetic personality.
In one case it had risen from the mount of Venus
and the subject, though born in a very poor family,
contracted a wealthy union. He was exceptionally
bright on the intellectual side and excelled as a
Structural Engineer.
The most common position found in many hands I
have examined is its appearance from the lines of the
Head and Heart. In the former case, success came
to these subjects after their 35th year from their own
exertions : and there was no element of what is called
luck '. When it rose from the Heart Line, the subjects
acquired fortune and reputation by the cultivation
of arts. Many who had this line were able writers of
dramas, etc., although it gives the subjects a great taste
for art and artistic things yet they never make use of
their artistic talents.
Where there were two or three lines of Success present,
the subjects were like " Jack of all trades but master
of none", These were trying to earn their livelihood
through the pursuit of different kinds of art, but were
never successful- in their projects.
However, those having a good Fate Line rising from
the wrist to the mount of Saturn were found to be
successful in life to a certain extent, specially from
the wealth they received from their parents. General
success in life was, however, denied to them.

In one case a Star was found on the Success Line,
the finest sign that can be found, the subject had
brilliant success in all his pursuits and excelled in
music specially. There were about a dozen or so of
my subjects who hadn't this line at all. There was no
element of luck or fortune in their careers. They had
little or no happiness. brightness or fame in their lives.
They had to strive hard for their daily bread and other
necessities of life.
Marriage
Marriage is universally accepted to be the most
important event in a person's life. In fact it is the
turning point in a man's life. The lines that govern
marriage are the Heart line, lines found between the
Heart Line and the base of the little finger on the
percussion of the mount of Mercury, hereinafter will be
called Marriage lines. The lines on the mount of Venus
and the Girdle of Venus too should be considered.
However the most important one is the Marriage line.
The distance from the Heart line to the base of the little
finger is reckoned, by the sages of the past, as 50 years.
Will my readers look at this portion of the hand-males
the right palm and females the left and see whether
there are any such line or lines running up the mount
of Mercury? In most hands, I am sure, there will be
two or three lines indicated. Some palmists may assert
that the subject will marry so many times according
to the number of the marriage lines. This is a wrong
conception. I have been pretty accurate in forecasting
marriage in most cases and during my examinations I
have found out that only thick lines should be taken
into account. The faint lines are only affection lines.
Time of Marriage
Every one of us is very impatient to know the time
of Marriage. This could be easily calculated on the
basis that the period between the Heart line and the
base of the little finger reckoned as 50 years. I have
experimented on this point and have been convinced
of its accuracy.
The long thick lines relate to marriage, the short thin
ones deep affection or marriage under contemplation.
If a thick line of Marriage is found just in the centre
of the Mount of Mercury, marriage takes place in the
subject's 25th year. If this line is closer to the Heart
line, the subject will have an early marriage in the 'teens
most probably with a relative, intimate friend or even
a 45th cousin. Palmists should use their discretion and
powers of observation to calculate the time accurately.
as it is very difficult to distinguish the thick and thin
lines from the naked eye.

Bad Marriage lines are as follows :-
(a) Line forked-which indicates a separation ;
(b) Line curved down-divorce or death of partner;
(c) Line with an island-loss of position, disgrace and
scandal ;
(d) Line cutting downwards through the Success Line-
the subject will lose his position and wealth through
such a union.
When the Marriage line is found straight and clear
it always promises a happy marriage and will take
place according to its situation either late or early
in life as the case may be. During my researches, 1
have found out that for a very desirable marriage a
cross sign too should be found simultaneously on the
mount of Jupiter, with a fine Heart line ending on
the mount of Jupiter. Subjects who had these marks
contracted marriages, which were conducive to their
future Happiness.
It may also be mentioned that a person could either
make or mar his destiny and work against the laws
set by his fate. It is only when man or woman tries to
override Hymen's orders that Holy Wedlock ends in a
deadlock. True to the very words of Shakespeare -the
Master-mind of England- Hanging and Wiving goes
by Destiny".
When men try to be the masters of their Fate they
ultimately find themselves in dishonourable graves. It
is not the fault of the Fate or the Stars, as Cassius said
to Brutus-" The fault, dear Brutus, is not in our stars,
but in ourselves."
Now I shall narrate two true incidents of paramount
importance that may be of interest to readers :
One day while travelling in the train, an old lady
requested me to read her palm. This lady who was old
in years, was young in appearance. While examining
her palm I saw a beautiful cross sign on the mount of
Jupiter and a fine line of Marriage almost in line with
the base of the little finger-according to our calculation
the event should come off in her 49th - 50th year. When
questioned she said that she was running in her 50th
year. There were two other marriage lines below but
dissected by other lines. I predicted that she would get
married within three months from date to a very rich
man who had taken a fancy for her from a very long
time-to be precise from the time of the death of her
first husband.

The lady was annoyed at my blunt statement and she
uttered these very words which still ring in my ears.
"My dear sonny, I am a grandma having grandsons and
daughters and don't you think it highly impertinent
of you to pronounce such bold statements. I just
celebrated my 50th birthday and what marriage for me
now that I am nearing the portals of the graveyard.
I maintained my prediction and went further to
describe the prospective husband. This was in June
1942, when I was about 23 years old. My subject simply
laughed at my childish prediction. Paradoxical as it
may seem, romance is not dead among grandmas too, I
received a letter from this lady in September the same
year intimating me of her marriage- to the identical
person portrayed by me. I was invited to lunch with
them one day and I could hardly believe my eyes when
I saw him. This is not a "Just so story" neither Fiction
nor Fable but a TRUE ROMANCE.
Summing up this section, it may be said that a cross on
the mount of Jupiter and a straight Marriage line and
a fine Heart line untasseled and uncut by subsidiary
lines, promises a happy marriage or union, provided it
is solemnized at the schedule period of life indicated
on the palm.
Summary
I have given my 12 years' research work in a nutshell
of the three important items in Life. I have found out
by experience that the study of the palm would be of
invaluable service to parents and guardians to mould
the lives of their children in the correct path, as well
as to all men and women, who wish to make the most
out of their lives.
I may stress the fact again that the study of the palms
cannot be regarded as irreligious, as the God of
Knowledge rewards knowledge, and to 'know' is the
divine right of man. The twin science of Palmistry and
Astrology do not belong to any religion, but are purely
sciences by themselves.
Gentle readers, if you wish to understand the nature
of the vastly unseen vibrations that usher you into
a momentary existence of joy or misery and finally
hurl you precipitately to the abysmal nothingness of
death, you should study the science of palmistry to
delineate the mysterious signs on your palms. Any
person who studies his palm with the desire to know
his Destiny, l think, is obeying the highest instinct of

The Sayana and the Nirayana Zodiacs
A The Sun is the centre of our Solar system
and is, relatively to the planets, FIXED. The
planets including our Earth move round it in definite
paths, called orbits. We on the earth, while ourselves
continually moving round and round the sun as well as
spinning like a top round our own axis, are unconscious
of our own double movements and imagine ourselves
to be not only fixed and stationary but also to be the
centres of the Solar System as well as the universe.
We look at the sun and other heavenly bodies moving
across the heavens and believe that all of them are
moving round us. It is only when we realise that we are
not really and actually fixed but only apparently so, we
find that all we observe in heavens is only relative
to our particular position at any particular moment of
time and not really true and correct for another person
looking at the same phenomenon from a different
latitude on the earth itself or from any other heavenly
body say Mars or Jupiter or the Sun. We, as astrologers,
however, are primarily concerned only with what we
see because it is only that particular configuration
of heavenly bodies that affects us and is taken into
account in Astrology, both in the East and the West.
It is the work of astronomy to determine the heliocentric
positions and movements of the different heavenly
bodies and to reduce them to the corresponding
geocentric apparent rates of motions and positions
at any particular latitude and longitude on earth. This
task is highly technical and involves not only accurate
telescopic observations but also complicated spherical-
trigonometrical calculations. All this work is done in
Observatories in the West. The information obtained
by them is of constant practical use to sailors and
navigators because they have nothing but the positions
of stars in the heavens to guide them in their course on
the broad seas. Slightest error in the data provided by
them is bound to prove disastrous and hence Nautical
Almanacs are prepared with extreme care.
The different Hindu Sidhantas also contains methods
of calculations employed by the navigators in a

different form but the defect in their use lies in the
fact that Hindu astrologers do not check and rectify
their mathematical processes and results by direct
observations. Without meaning any disrespect to any
panchang maker, it will not be wrong to assert that
though most of these learned pandits are really adepts
in the art of calculation and the use of the formulae, or
the geometrical grounds and configurations on which
they are based, and hence it is beyond their power
to reconcile differences creeping in, consequent on
the use of differently based Sidhantas or differently
worded or worked out formulae or to appreciate
scientific criticism. They mechanically resort to ancient
authorities without realising the vast difference
created by the introduction of a new factor. Unless
Panchang-making is, therefore taken up, by men who
have already mastered Solid Geometry, Spherical
Trigonometry and advanced Astronomy as taught
in Universities, and who have also understood the
basis on which the different formulae applied in the
different siddhantas are constructed, it is useless to
expect reconciliation or rectification of the different
panchangs or the Siddhants. So long as this is not done,
any one particular panchang may be accidently correct
but cannot be considered scientifically reliable.
As already mentioned Astrology is concerned only
with the Geocentric positions and movements of
planets and those fixed stars which are located in the
belt of heavens within which the planets seem to move.
This belt runs within a few degrees on both sides of
the line of the Ecliptic - the apparent path of the sun
round the earth. This belt contains certain groups or
constellations of fixed stars distinct from one another.
These groups are called Nakshatras and they are 27
in number. They are so located that each of these 27
nakshatras have been allotted an arc of 1320 minutes
of the zodiacal belt. This belt is sub-divided into12
parts - also each part being called a Rashi. Each rashi is
an arc of 30 degrees and hence contains 2 Nakshatras.
It is obvious therefore that when astrologers talk of
Rashis or Nakshatras, they mean particular portions

of the zodiacal belt which contain particular groups
of stars situated in a particular configuration. Hindu
astrologers believe that it is consequent on the
passage of any planet through the influence of thee
particular constellations that certain influence of
special astrological value are imparted to them and
that these influences are modified when that position
has been passed through. Hindus also believe that
there are certain points in certain Rashis where planets
acquire Uchcha or Neechahala, Mula Trikona or
Swakshetrabala etc. etc. They assert that just as blood
circulating through the various glands of the human
system does the work specific and peculiar to the gland
in which it happens to be at any particular moment,
and it changes its function the moment it finds itself in
a different gland, similarly planets or grahas - foci of
particularised types of energy change their influence
with a change in their position. If the first POINT
of this Great belt in heavens is taken to be Aswini
Nakshatra 0, and the end of it (which point must be
the same as the beginning) the Revathi Nakshatra 13
deg. 20 minutes, this belt is called the Nirayana Zodiac,
the permanent never changing Hindu Zodiac. This
Zodiac alone is used by Hindu astrologers for their
predictions - natal, horary, annul or directional.
The axis of the Earth i.e. the diameter passing through
the North and South Poles, is not upright or collinear
with the Zenith and Nadir line but is inclined to it at
an angle of about 23 degrees. In consequence the
ecliptic is not coincident with or parallel to the Equator
but intersects it at an angle of 23 degrees. The two
points of intersection are called the Equinoxes - Vernal
and Autumnal. These are the two points where the Sun
is exactly perpendicular to the Equator and when days
and nights are equal. The westerners assume the vernal
Equinox as the starting point of their Zodiac or in other
words the firstpoint of their Mesha or the sign Aries.
The inclination of the Earths axis to the plane of the
equator is responsible for the variations in seasons,
weather,winds, rainfall and also a number of other
magnetic and electric conditions prevailing on the
earth. Occult traditions teach that this inclination is
not an eternal feature but is periodic. The axis tilts
when evolutionary processes require a drastic change
in world conditions. The present inclination suits
evolutionary requirements at this stage. This article
is not meant to study this issue but a passing reference
is necessary.
The two equinoctial points are not fixed with reference
to the constellational Zodiac but regularly retrogress

or recede by a fraction of a minute every year. This
strange phenomenon is called the Precession of
Equinoxes. In consequence of it the First point of Aries
is always receding backwards and therefore the extent
of Western Signs (Rashis) is also always changing. This
Zodiac is called the Sayana Zodiac and is the Zodiac
used by Western Astrologers for their predictions. It
should be noted that the Western first Rashi Aries
does not necessarily begin with Aswini Nakshatra.
There was a time when the two first points of the two
Meshas were coincident but, since then, the first point
of the Western Aries has receded from the first point
of the Constellational Zodiac. The distance between
these two first points (which is always increasing) is
called Ayanamsha and hence Ayanamsha is always a
varying quantity.
According to the Western units of measurement the
mean rate of the precession of the Equinoxes is about
50-25 seconds and it takes the first point 25785 odd
years to complete whole cycle of the constellational
Zodiac. Different Hindu Panchang makers assume
different quantities for this rate, for example the
Vishwa Panchang assumes it to be 54 seconds a year,
while the Bapu-Devji Panchang assumes it to be about
59 seconds a year. It is this variation in the rate of the
precession of the equinoctal point which is responsible
for the great difference in the ayanamshas assumed
by different panchang makers and the consequent
confusion in the various panchangs in this country.
Regarding the two zodiacs described above Alan
Leo, the famous Astrologer of England, remarks as
follows :
The Zodiac that we use is really the earths aura (it
would be more accurate to say Astral Light). It is a
sphere or ovoid, the poles of which coincide with the
poles of the ecliptic: it would appear to be identical
with the Crystal Sphere alluded to in the passage
in Modern Astrology already referred to. For some
reasons, at present unexplained, this sphere is polarised
in one direction, that it to say, it remains always in one
position whatever the place of the earth in its orbit, in
this respect being comparable to the ordinary mariners
compass, the circular card of which always floats with
its North Pole pointing in one direction. This sphere is
divided into twelve parts like the sections of an orange
and it is these sections which constitute the Signs of
the zodiac. We are, however, chiefly concerned with
its equatorial plane for it is this which we measures in
signs or degrees, and which determines the zodiacal
position of a planet.

Now it is clear that since this sphere of aura remains
constantly floating in one position while the earth
journeys round the Sun, the Suns rays will successively
pass through each of the signs. ... and it is the
vivification of such portion of the aura by the power
of the Sun that produces those characteristics which
we classify as Sun in Aries, Sun in Cancer etc. It other.
need hardly be mentioned that this aura does not
turn round each day with the rotation of the earth on
its axis, but that the earth spins round within it, like
the wheel in a gyroscope.
What it is that keeps the zodiacal sphere polarised in
one direction, we do not know. It is known that the
sun with all its attendant planets, is moving in one
particular direction and it is just possible that this
movement may have something to do with it.
It seems not unreasonable to infer that this aura -
the zodiac, is the earths astral body (KamaSharira)
and it may be that the Earths mental body (Manasik
Sharira) = a similar but larger sphere - is polarised in
some quite different direction and is perhaps identical
with the Fixed Zodiac of the Hindus: the first point
of which is now situated in about the 20th degrees of
our Aries (Mesha).
In another place Alan Leo writes :
A word or two may be added as to the irregularity
of extent of the constellations ... The cause of this
irregularity may be conceived of as due either to our
ignorance of the true limitsof each constellation -
points on which astronomers are by no means agreed
- or else to the circle of this GREAT ZODIAC (Hindu)
being to some extent oblique to the plane of the solar
system and to the latter being at the present time by no
means in the centre thereof, whereby the stars limiting
each constellation appear foreshortened nearer each
other in some cases and farther away in others.
However this may be, what we (Westerners) are really
concerned with now is the fact that the Zodiac of the
Signs (Sayana) with which our study deals, in spite of
its sympathetic relation to the uneven Zodiac of the
Constellations, is itself quite evenly divided into twelve
uniform spaces or signs of 30 degrees each, familiar to
us under the same names and possessing in themselves
the same nature as the twelve constellations.
As regards the Constellations it may be said briefly
that the zodiac of the constellations would seem to
be concerned with macrocosmic evolution or the
life of the Solar System as a whole, as distinguished

from microcosmic or human evolution, which is
demonstrably related to the Zodiac of the Signs;
corresponds with the equivalent point in the other -
corresponds it is to be noted for the first two zodiacs
do not coincide in position, and therefore the Signs
in one Zodiac overlap so to speak, the signs in the
From the above passages it is clear that experience
extending over centuries has proved to westerners
that reliable astrological results are obtained when
predictions are based on the zodiac of signs i.e. the
Sayana Zodiac. The experience of Hindu astrologers
extending over centuries goes to demonstrate on the
contrary that most reliable results are possible only
when the Nirayana or the permanent Fixed, Zodiac of
the Constellations is used as the basis of predictions.
Whatever the protagonists of both these systems may
say and assert it goes without saying that on occasions
neither system gives correct results. It is one thing
to find justification for past events and it is another
to predict the event from a particular configuration
of planets. In certain cases the combinations are so
intricate and ambiguous, that they try the skill of the
best of astrologers and land them into morass. On
the other hand, it must also be admitted that human
experience knows no geographical bounds and what
is found true in Berlin or London, must be found true
in Delhi or Peking also and vice-versa. The humble
submission of the writer is that Hindu astrologers
should give the Sayana Zodiac predictions a fair trial
and try to discover circumstances in which the Sayana
gives more reliable results than the Nirayana system
which is already in vogue in this country. Human
knowledge should not be static as we in India have
made it, but cumulative. Let us try the Sayana Zodiac
for what it is worth and find if it can really enrich our
system. The belief of the writer of this note is that
both these systems were actually used by our ancients
also and the Sayana system got confused with the
Nirayana literature during the period the two zodiacs
were coincident. It goes without saying that most of our
present day astrological literature was produced at
such time and the writers of those days did not consider
it worth their while to lay special stress as to which
system they were following. This may also account for
the mutual contradictions we meet in the writings of
some of our standard authors or rishis.

the Sayana Zodiac. But this is not enough. It is humbly
suggested to the Editor of this valuable magazine to see
that in all such cases predictions based on the Nirayana
system are also published simultaneously to bring out
the advantages of taking readings from either of them
or both of them. Fairness demands that this should be
done impartially and not without prejudice.
In the passages quoted above Alan Leo makes another
very very valuable suggestion which might not have
appealed to the mind of Western astrologers but
should certainly catch the eye of Hindu astrologers.
Alan Leo suggests that while the Zodiac of the
Signs (Sayana Zodiac) is the Earths Kama Sharira,
the Constellational Hindu Zodiac is the Earths
Manasic (Mental) Sharira, who does not recognise the
extremely intimate relation between manas, ichcha and
kriya? What action is possible, unless it has thought
and desire to initiate it? The nature of any action can
be known the moment either the desire responsible
for it or the thought at the back of it, is known. If the
suggestion of Alan Leo is true, the Constellational
Hindu Zodiac should provide the mental causes and

the Sayana Zodiac should give a clue to the Kamic
desire causes of all events on the Sthula- the Bhuloka.
My humble suggestion to thoughtful Hindu astrologers
is to try to interlink the two zodiacs in this direction
and thus determine if there is any truth at the back of
this idea of Alan Leo.
Unless this work is undertaken jointly by a number of
astrologers of repute, disconnected individual efforts
are likely to end in smoke. It is obvious that the learned
pandits of the Benares Hindu University consider it
below their dignity either to undertake research or
to try to add to astrological knowledge. The Editor
of THE ASTROLOGICAL MAGAZINE appears to be
far more open-minded as well as the adventurous. It
is my conviction that if he desires, he can materialise
some research in all these astrological problems and
bring together a band of workers who are prepared to

Astrological View of Life and Death
M uch time in thought have been spent by
philosophers ancient and modern, in trying to
Life and Death, the two are ever perplexing the human

of Astrology.
All things, it is supposed, are manifestations of astral
energies collected together. Their differences depend
upon the different proportions m which the energies
combine.
Prana
To elucidate a little further, sun is the central planet
in the solar system. Around It move the other planets,
being powerfully attracted by and towards. It The Sruti
texts say that from Sun sprigs forth special kinds of
rays called Pranas, a particle of which, if fallen on a
molecule of matter, makes it capable of drawing into
it six other molecules to form a single unit. All the
characteristics of the Sun are latent in every speck of
a ray. A molecule takes in the qualities of the Prana
which falls on it. Then it pulls towards itself six other
molecules, just as the Sun does the Moon and the five
Taragrahas.
Thus the solar force mingles with .the other astral
forces giving rise to manifold creation. But it is to
be observed that, of the astral energies, prominence
always belongs to the solar and the lunar ones.
Man too is a combination of these astral forces.
His distinguishing feature is that in him alone. The
constituent astral energies have very nearly attained
perfection.

A New Interpretation of Karma
The astral forces in us endeavour to establish bonds
with our environments. In so doing they undergo
modifications. Their effort to establish bonds is called
Karma and the modifications are the Karmaphalas,-
fruits of Karma.
Happiness and Misery
Sukha or happiness is that state which an individual
experiences when there is harmony and no conflict,
among the component astral forces. Full Moon and
Jupiter are the planets that contribute most to that
state.
But there are also rays that conspire to break the
harmony and bring discord. These belong to Saturn.
Saturn is verily a rebel planet. He is jealous, as it were
of the strong union of the various. Astral forces. His
influence mercilessly begins to split and separate from
one another the well-united astral knots. Then occur
experiences that are not palatable. These arc diseases,
pains and sorrows. Hence the reason for describing
Saturn as ' Rogasokadikaraka.

Laziness
It is but natural that the astral energies, when their
mutual attachment is loosened, cannot possess the
same capacity (which we may, with profit, divert
through the channel of any work) as when they remain
tightly knit together. Thus attention diminishes,
and the interest in work is lost. The individual feels
indifferent. Rightly, therefore, is the karakatva for
sloth and laziness ascribed to Saturn.
The Karakatva of Theft
We have already seen that Saturn attempts to cause
separation between the astral energies, the fundamental
constituents in an individual. When things belonging to
a person are separated by theft, or when one's near and
dear relatives or friends are parted, it may reasonably
be inferred that Saturn, the planet responsible for all
sorts of separation, is again the originator of such theft
or parting (Cauryaviyogadhikaraka).
Poverty
Health is that state where the astral energies are well
balanced or equipoised. Saturn who brings about
diseases by disturbing the equilibrium of the energies
and thus wrecking health, keeps the individual aloof
from wealth which, if spent on nourishing food,
may be conducive to health. This accounts for the
Daridryakarakatva of Sani.
The Meaning of Death
Life ends and death results when Saturn becomes
successful in completely breaking the cords that bind
the astral energies as a group. If the strength of Saturn
is not much, disintegration of the energies will take
place only after a considerable length of time. So, the
validity of the astrological law that 'while prosperity of
every Bhava increases or decreases with the strength
of the respective Kiraka, the duration of life indicated
by the eighth Bhava is inversely proportional to the
potency of Saturn.'
The Astral Energies-Their Order of
Combining for Creation
The solar energy does not itself first combine with the
energies of the five Taragrahas, but only after uniting
with the lunar energy. In other words, the solar energy,
being associated with the lunar one, mingles with the
rays of the Taragrahas and then accomplishes creation.
We are here reminded of the Vedanta passage which
declares that Paramatman cannot create anything in
the absence of Maya, and of the famous line in Sri

Sankaracharya's Saundaryalahari, "Without Sakti, Siva
is incapable of action.' Exponents of astrology identify
Paramatman or Siva with the Sun. And Miiya or Sakti
is none other than the Moon. To sum up, the two
foremost forces, solar and lunar,-mix to form a single
power which, -afterwards, becomes the sole substratum
for the combination, progress and decline of the astral
influences of the Tariigrahas. That is why we are told
that the fifth and ninth Bhavas in the horoscope (whose
Karakas are the Sun and Moon) can supply us with all
particulars relating to one's past and future births.
Rebirth
Body is the visible development of the collective
astral energies. When it is destroyed, that visible
growth alone comes to an end. The energies still
remain in an invisible form in which are minutely
inherent the Karmas Vasanas and Samskaras. After
death, the invisible combination of astral energies,
being strongly attracted by a similar combination in
a living individual, a combination possessing almost
identical qualities, falls into that individual's Garbha
( .....) and takes birth again. The innate seeds of Karmas
and instincts slowly develop, and the whole story of
life is repeated.
The Astrological Concept of Moksha
If the astral . energies forming the invisible federation
mentioned above are fully devoid of the particles of
Karma (which serve as connecting links between them)
they get themselves dissociated from one another and
regain their original positions, namely the respective
planetary spheres. This, in a nutshell, is the astrological
conception of Moksha.
The Vedantins stress that Sama and Dana are the
two main trails essential for Moksha. Sama is the
process of diverting the mind from the senses, and
Dana is detaching the senses from the external world.
Mind is made up of the lunar force, and the senses
are constituted by the rays of the Taragrahas. So,
what is meant by practising Sama and Dana is only
disconnecting the bonds of the lunar force from the
astral energies of the Taragrahas, and of these latter
energies from worldly things.
The Mokshakarakatva of Saturn
When the fruits of Karma and the worldly experiences
are unfavourable, we feel unhappy. This state of
unhappiness breeds in us a thoughtful disposition.
What for is this life, if deprived of joy? We ask ourselves
this question a thousand times. Life always has endless
sorrows in store for us. The best way to avoid sorrows is

to avoid births. So we yearn to annihilate life for ever.
In this manner Dukkha (grief) leads to Tatvajignasa
(an enquiry as to the truth to overcome grief) which in
tum takes us to Vairagya that ultimately culminates in
Moksha. We may, therefore, conclude that Moksha is
the delicious fruit of cultured grief. Thus Saturn who
bestows grief bestows also Pravrajya (renunciation)
and Pralaya (liberation).
The Attainment of Moksha
energies are weakened, and at the moment of death
they break. The energies of the five Taragrahas first
sever their mutual connection, and get back to their
former abodes, the planetary planes. This fact is in
agreement with the Vedantins theory that as soon

The physical fitness also must not be lost sight of
inasmuch as one may satisfy all the condition needed
for a work requiring hard labour but if he is weak
in health, his merits in other directions would be
unavailing nevertheless. Hence the health, the eye
sight, the acuity of hearing, the capacity for work etc.,
are examined before prescribing vocation.
Other tests measuring Scholastic abilities e.g., Reading;
Psychological Trait; e.g., Reaction time are also
administered to make the testing programme complete.
Finally the examiner enters into an interview with the
testee to get a first hand information of his ambition,
vocational opportunity, vocational plan etc. He bases
his opinion of the testee on the manner in which he
speaks, behaves, attacks problems in the course of the
conversation and responds to the tests.
Now what I want here to urge is that this scientific
vocational guidance as it is called can be helped and
supplemented materially by tl1e principles and truths
of Astrology.
The little knowledge that I have gained in Astrology
has convinced me that the, ancient sages correlated

as the Mukta departs from the world, the Samskaras
(which are acquired through the five senses and the
five elements whose Kiirakas are the Tiiragrahas), and
which have begun to decay since the dawn of Vaira gya,
leave the soul to which they cling, though 'loosely, until
the body falls. What remain are the united energies
of the Sun and the Moon. Of these the solar energy
now exerts its supremacy and entirely overwhelms
and dissolves the other one, and then vanishes into
the region of the Sun. With this we may compare the
position of the Vediintins which is as follows : Maya
(the lunar force) entangles Atman (the solar force)
only so far as the point of exhaustion of the Vasanas
(the particles of the astral energies of the Tiirilgrahas),
Atman absorbs Maya into himself and is free, when the
Vasanas are spent. (FOR)
in a mysterious manner but most accurately, the
elements in human beings including those making
for successful careers with the planetary position
and combination occurring at the time of birth. The
prediction of avocation from horoscopic constellation
so marvellously agrees -with possibilities that it
struck me more than once about the feasibility of
making the study of Astrology insofar as it concerns
right selection of careers, a part and parcel of the
Scientific Vocational Guidance. I, on my part, have
recommended vocations to many entering to life from
their horoscopic indications and has been following
up their careers. I hope to present the results of my
investigation in future.
What the stars and planets commend seems to be
perfectly agreeable to the entire constitution of an
individual. The judgement seems to be so broad
based and exhaustive that the designated career suits
him temperamentally, physically and intellectually.
I wonder how this stupendous task can be achieved
unless and until a detailed testing programme is
undertaken. Anyway, I see high hopes and immense
possibilities of utilising the sure indications of
Astrology in decindications of Astrology is deciding a
man's right vocation and its inclusion in the Science of
Vocational Guidance and Personnel Selection. (FOR)

First column gives the English dates and next to it the names of the regional months and dates. The ending moments of
Tithi, Nakshatra, Yoga and Karana are given in the 24 hour clock extending to 30 hours.
Of the Nityayogas, Vishkumbha, Parigha, Vyatipata, Vajra, Vyaghata, Vaidhruthi, Sula, Ganda and Atiganda are generally
spurned for auspicious events and they are marked in red in the Panchanga. Vydhruti pervades from 34640 to 360 and
Vyatipata from 21320 to 22640 of the sum of the Nirayana longitudes of the Sun and the Moon. Vydhruti and Vyatipata
punyakaala are observed on the day when the yogas prevail for 1 hours or more, when Sraddha is performed by the
astute. These two belong to the shannavati -96- Sraddhas ordained for a householder. Considering the astronomical
implications, the Sayana Vydhruti and Vyatipata days are also indicated in the Panchanga. The auspicious Amritayoga
and Siddhayoga and inauspicious Maranayoga and Prabalarishtayoga come under Amirtaadiyoga scheme and are different
from the Nityayogas.
The Karana is the half of the Tithi. They are mainly classified as Sthira - fixed or immovable and Chara or moveable.
The Chara Karanas are seven in number and the Sthira are only four. The fixed ones are inauspicious. They are Sakuni,
Chatushpada, Naga and Kimsatugna. The seven movable Karanas are in their order, Bava, Baalava, Kaulava, Taitila,
Gara, Vanija and Vishti (or Bhadra.) Among the movable Karanas Vishti or Bhadra is considered to be of dreadful. The
forbidden Karanas are marked in red for easy identification.
We have most of our religious observances pegged on to the Tithis. Pournamipooja Chandradarisana, Sankataharachaturthi
Vrata, Shastivrata, Ekadasi Vrata and Pradosha are specially mentioned in the Panchanga. Pournamipooja is done in the
evenings on days the full Moon is prevalent. Chandradarisana is observed on the evening on the day when the crescent
Moon appears for the first time in the west after the Amavasya. Chaturthi of the Krishnapaksha or Bahula Chaturthi of
every month is known as Sankataharachaturthi. The evenings of Sukla and Krishna Trayodasi days are specially observed
as Pradosha Vrata days.

Karako Bhava Nashaya principle does not work
consistently as it is generally referred and interpreted
these days. I look KBN principle in holistic perspective.
Let me explain my point of view.
It is widely accepted rule that fructification of any event
(good or bad) depends upon three important/primary
factors: (1) House, (2) Lord, and (3) Karaka. Keeping
other things constant, each factor broadly contributes
33% share. The KBN situation brings two factors into
one place i.e. House and Karaka merge (33%+33% =
66%). As a result of merger, the concerned person or
area of life becomes highly sensitive place. Rationally
speaking, this situation could be very good or very bad
for concerned person or area of life.
For instance, Venus in 7th house makes the relationship
area very sensitive, (for good or bad depending on
other sambandhas). A single evil aspect on the 7th will
not only hurt marriage house, but also marriage karaka.
This leads to 66% damage to marriage/relationship.
Suppose if Venus was not in 7th, then same evil aspect
on 7th House would be only 33% hurt marriage/
relationship.
Take another example of Jupiter in 5th house. If the
principle is applied verbatim, children should be
destroyed. But in my view this is not the outcome
of stand alone KBN. Here if Jupiter/5th merger is
aspected/conjoined by other good lords then native
will have children who are entirely coloured by that
aspecting/associating planet. Aspect/association of
good lords or natural benefics produce very good
effect, and bad lords or natural malefics give very
bad effects. For instance, if said above 5th house
Jupiter is aspecting/associating Moon, then kids will
be emotional, sensitive and domestic. If aspected/
associated by Sun then kids will be prominent,
egoistic, famous and rich. If 5th house Jupiter is

Jupiter), abortion/gynecological complications (8th
lord sambandha with KBN Jupiter), or indifference/
separation from child (12th lord sambandha KBN
Jupiter) may appear.
Ben Craib: I think we have to use common sense and
observation. Venus in 7th might show a very romantic
nature, so the person has trouble when romance wears
off in relationships. Its like overdose of Venusian
energy when it comes to relationships. Moon in 4th
is good for personal happiness maybe, but maybe it
shows an overdose of maternal energy a big love of
the mother, big presence of mother in the persons life
indicating difficulty in detaching, breaking free - this
is what I have observed.
Claudia Anfuso: The living significator of a house in
the house that represents the same living being can be
too much of a good thing turning to disruption of those
themes. But not all KBN give the same phala. It needs
to be qualified. Generally, the more exaggerated the
condition of the graha and the placement of such graha,
the more magnified the effect. A usually
has enough dignity to resolve whatever disruption
occurs, and the least obvious effect is by grahas that
are ordinarily conditioned.
Padmaseni Anumarla: Agreed that results are mixed.
From experience I see that the planet concerned
(functional benefic or malefic) is a point to consider as
to whether the effect of KBN would be good are bad.
Barry Rosen: Great input everyone. As with all things,
interpretation is 1000 shades of grey and the blacks and
whites are few and far between. Always a reminder with
every rule that there are so many exceptions and we
get so much feedback from clients when we ask them
how this is manifesting and it is always a complex thing
and there is no some simple rule that we can apply.

Yoga Vashishta tells us that Sri Rama is giving us
upadesa/spiritual teaching about renouncing wealth.
Those who do not properly utilize their wealth will
suffer negative consequences.
Rama says that he rejects wealth and explains why he
does so. We feel that earning is important and we need
to have money. Rama has observed that money yields
only unhappiness. Ego and illusion increase because of

wealth. Hence, Rama is advising us. He is cautioning
us to be careful about how money is used, and how
money has a bad influence on us.
Vedanta generally does not deal with such subjects. But
these are important lessons for us to learn. Brahma
Sutras keep using the word, Artha. Vedanta first lays
a strong foundation of the theory of practical analysis.
Here we have no such foundation in the process of
analysis. Unless we see the negative aspects, we will
not leave a certain harmful object. Children are taught
important lessons through fear. When they get a cold,
cough or fever, they are told that because of eating
ice cream they got sick. If the teaching is not given at
the time when they are going through the unpleasant
consequence of their action, the lesson will not register
in their minds and thus it will not be effective.
Rama is giving us a warning. Enemies could attack from
any side therefore we have to be on the alert always.
Rama says detachment is essential for everyone. The
comfort and convenience offered by dispassion are
described. Dispassion stands alone. It does not co-
exist with anything else. Everyone who has a Soul has
dispassion. Even the most favorite things are given up
by us when the doctor advises us to do so. That clearly
shows that we all have built-in dispassion. Those who
go against their doctors orders shall be deemed foolish.
Those who do not give up cigarette smoking even after
being warned that it will harm their health and are
therefore foolish.
Artha. What does it mean? It means, after we learn
the teachings. Those who have not learned the lessons
need to be taught. That is why Sage Valmiki is using this
great work is teaching us through the words of Rama.
The poverty-stricken people who fail in their attempts
to gain wealth blame Goddess Lakshmi. That is not
surprising. But Rama who is wealthy is speaking of
the negative aspects of wealth. Just as a tender creeper
dies at the touch of frost, our association with wealth
harms us. Money kills the goodness that is inherent in
us. Wealth is the frost that kills a tree and prevents it
from sprouting anew.
An owl sees at night. But it is blind during the day. We
are just the reverse. The way the owl rejoices when
darkness comes, the man of ego is delighted when
money comes. We see what we should not see and
we fail to see what needs to be seen. Rama is giving a
warning. If you are confident that you can wisely handle
the situation that is fine. But at the very first signs of

danger, you must exercise caution. Vedanta and worldly
life are different. But the important principles applied
here must be applied there also. An owl sees only in
the dark, and not during daylight. That is a flaw. We
must guard ourselves against such flaws.
Rahu and Ketu eclipse the Sun and the Moon. For
discretion, which is like the Moon, Rahu is the dragon
that swallows it. Scientists explain to us that eclipses
are caused by shadow. The shadow appears like the
moving tongue of a serpent. The rishis (sages) know
this truth. They gave easy explanations for the layman
to understand the phenomenon.
Saujanya - a helpful and sympathetic nature is absent
in a wealthy person. One, who has no knowledge of
starvation, does not recognize the value of food. He
does not empathize with the poor who starve for lack
of food. Because of excess wealth, people waste their
food and wealth. What is considered good generally
is not necessarily good for everyone without any
exception. For someone who is noble-natured is like
a lotus and for them money is like the Moon, which
will cause him/her to close up like that lotus. Butter
gives nutrition, but not so for everyone at all times. It
is harmful to one who is sick. It is the same with milk.
Some are allergic to it.
The rainbow comes and disappears very quickly. It is
very attractive and colorful. Yet, its presence is fleeting.
To take a photo it is difficult, just like it is to take a
photo of lightning. Wealth also comes and goes like
lightning. Wealth favors the ignorant. Rama, who is
the wealthiest amongst princes, and who lives now in
the lap of luxury is speaking these words. But he has
experienced hardships at Gurukula. He knows what
difficulties are. Hence, having seen both sides, Rama
is giving his clear analysis.
A wild mongoose in a forest also is hard to sight. It
keeps running away. It is next to impossible to take
its photograph. It appears and instantly disappears.
Wealth is like that. It never remains still in one place.
When you keep a lamp in an open place, unless
protected with a glass guard, it goes out in an instant.
Wealth is also unreliable like the flame of a lamp kept
in the breeze. Wealth continuously flickers.
Just as a lion falls on a huge elephant and kills it,
wealth kills our discretion. The lion slits the head of
the elephant and kills it. The gems that poets say exists
inside the head of an elephant, refers to its intelligence
and shrewd judgment. Ganapati has a huge head, like

an elephant. One should pray to Ganapati first thing
in the morning. His large head denotes a vast intellect.
Mother Saraswati is with Ganapati always. He got his
head replaced perhaps for this reason that he wanted
us to see Him in this form.
When wealth gets to a persons head, his ego swells
and leads to his ruin. Keep Lakshmi in the heart. Do
not give her control over your life. Or, keep Lakshmi at
the feet, with you in control of it. Lakshmi who should
be envisioned in the Sahasrara is not the goddess of
wealth, jingling with the sound of gold coins. The
deitys form in each chakra is different. It is wrong to
pray to Lakshmi seated in the Sahasrara as the giver of
wealth. There she has two arms only and is worshiped
by elephants.
Rama asserts, Wealth robs judgment and intelligence.
Except sorrow, I have not seen any happiness emerging
from wealth. All are listening with a sense of shock, at
the royal assembly. Rama is warning about how money
influences our minds. He is not speaking objectively
about currency or gold. He is concerned about the evil
influence that they exercise upon us. It feels cool to
the touch, but a sword is sharp and harmful. Wealth
is likewise deceptively attractive. Rama is expressing
his conclusions about wealth. He says, It steals our
judgment and causes mental turmoil. I see only grief
resulting from prosperity.
Wealth is shameless. A poor man is married to the
Lakshmi of poverty. She keeps leaving him and
returning to live with him. Lakshmi comes to one
because of sin. It makes people commit the most
horrendous crimes. Many atrocious acts in the world
are instigated by greed for wealth. Wealth is like a
poisonous creeper that grows out of a well filled with
venomous snakes.
There are 3 types of disciples, those at beginners state,
those at an intermediate stage, and disciples at an
advanced stage. All of them need instruction. That is
Ramas intention. The wealthy are comfortable in their
lives. They are advised not to hoard, to give in charity,
and to spend wisely. Those at the middle stage are told
to earn in a just manner and spend wisely. The final
stage disciples are instructed to earn only as much as
required for survival. Charity may be given not just in
the form of money, but also as effort and advice.
In the 14th Sarga, Jeevita Garhanam is the topic. How
to utilize life is explained. Rama is blaming life. Why?
This approach does not appeal to us. We think that we

are born and are engaged in spiritual pursuit. But the
wise question the cause of existence itself. Because of
having committed sin we are born. We argue to suit
the circumstance. We lack a firm understanding of the
theory and background of life.
Life is like a bubble it is said. I do not agree. If it is
in fact like a bubble, I would be very happy. A bubble
is born in the ocean. When it pops, it merges in the
ocean. If life pops and we merge in God, then there
is nothing to regret. But it does not happen that way.
Rama describes lifespan.
It rained. It rained on a tree and the water fell to the
ground. Sometimes when the suns rays fall on a blade
of grass, the tiny drops of water display numerous colors
and they sparkle beautifully. Some photographers are
able to capture the beauty of a raindrop on a blade
of grass before it slides off. On a tender leaf when it
rains, one water drop stays at the tip of the leaf like an
ornament, and it keeps gently quivering. Suddenly with
breeze, it drops. If it is a mature leaf, the drop is held
for a longer duration. One never knows exactly when
the drop of water will fall. Life is also like that. Exactly
when it will end, no one knows. If we take a photograph,
we will have the picture with us even after the drop of
water falls down. Our wisdom that we acquire is like
the photograph that we keep with us for our future use.
Even doctors acknowledge this fact that life is
unpredictable. Rama is stating these blunt facts as
if he is scolding. We think more about our enemies
than our friends sometimes. Gods enemies also get
liberation. Examples are: Kamsa and Hiranyakashipu.
They were in constant fear of punishment from
God. We keep thinking about our enemies also. By
contemplating on the negative aspects of a subject,
you gain knowledge about it. One is very cautious
about poison, and harmful acid in the kitchen.
Vedanta exhorts us to consider the flaws and weaknesses
to gain a better understanding. Where has life come
from? Your lifespan is earned by previous merit. An
astrologer or doctor should not be challenged that his
words of hope have turned false. God has granted a
certain lifespan and no one can know it or change it.

Mr. B. Suryanarayana Rao, second son of Dr. B.V. Raman and Mrs. Rajeswari Raman passed away, peacefully, on
October 20, 2016. He was in good health throughout his life.

Mr. Suryanarayana Rao was married to Mrs. Vijayalakshmi for forty five years. He was fair-complexioned,
soft-spoken and a quiet person. He was always meticulous in taking care of his health through yoga and proper diet.
He is survived by his wife, brothers and sisters, relatives and friends.
