Thomas Hobbes es recordado por su obra sobre filosofa poltica, aunque tambin
contribuy en una amplia gama de campos como historia, geometra, teologa, tica,
filosofa general y ciencia poltica.2?
La poca de Hobbes se caracteriza por una gran divisin poltica que confrontaba
dos bandos bien definidos:
Situacin filosfico-social[editar]
En los albores del Renacimiento, el filsofo italiano Nicols Maquiavelo expuso en
su principal obra, El prncipe (1513), la teora de que el gobernante no debe regir
sus actos por normas morales o procedentes del derecho natural, sino que debe
reconocer como nica gua el bien del Estado. Por su parte, Jean Bodin propugn que
el Estado deba asumir la soberana absoluta (summa potestas) sobre el pueblo.
Contra el concepto de razn de Estado argido por los anteriores fueron formuladas
las teoras contractualsticas de Althusius, segn las cuales la soberana descansa
en el pueblo, y el iusnaturalismo de Hugo Grocio, que defini la injusticia como
aquello que parece contrario a la comunidad de los seres sensitivos. Con Samuel von
Pufendorf, quien aplic al derecho el mtodo deductivo de las ciencias matemticas,
adquiri valor el concepto de respeto recproco.
