YIWH SYNAGOGUE DECORUM PROJECT

YIWH Synagogue Decorum Project
As Elul has begun and we attempt to get ourselves into the mindset of tefilla and of the High Holidays we
will be introducing a few measures to help improve the decorum in our shul during davening. The goal of this pro-
ject is to enhance our tefilla experience which is something important to all of us. We wish to ensure that as a shul
we show the proper level of respect for those around us, for Hashem, and for the holiness of the space that we
have worked so hard to build and maintain. Below are a few ways that we hope will help us reach our goal. As
time goes on we will introduce some of the other creative ideas we have come up with.
We ask for your full cooperation in this project.
Mi Sheberach
We would like to make the job of the gabbai easier, to make our leyning faster and more efficient, to ease
some of the confusion on the bima, and to reduce the amount of time that you are sitting in shul with nothing to
do when it is so tempting to begin a conversation with your neighbor. One of the ways that we want to do that is
by modifying the way that we say “Mi Sheberachs” in between Aliyot on Shabbat and Yom Tov mornings. Men
who get an aliya are welcome and encouraged to make a second Mi Sheberach after their aliya and make a dona-
tion to the shul as is the current practice. However, starting this Shabbat the gabbai will mention by name only
your wife and children’s names. If you have sons-in-law or daughters-in-law or if you have grandchildren, although
they will not be mentioned by name they will be included with your child’s name and the addition of “vechol mish-
pachto/a” (“and his/her whole family”).
We will also be asking the men in the near future to update your name cards so that the gabbaim don’t
have to struggle through it.
Talking in Shul
Lately we have become more lax in allowing the noise level in the room to rise. We know how easy it is to lean
over to your neighbor and start a conversation. No one will fault you for saying a few words here or there in a
whisper but we should not be having full blown conversations with people during davening unless it is for the sake
of the davening itself (e.g. If the gabbai is asking someone to daven or get an aliya etc…). This is disrespectful, dis-
ruptive, and sets a very bad example for the kids and teenagers in the room. When the rabbi or the gabbaim feel
that there is too much noise they will stop the chazzan or baal koreh until it is quiet enough to continue. We will
keep doing this throughout the service in order to ensure that the quiet remains.
Thanks in advance for your support and cooperation. We are committed to working together with you to
ensure that we all come out ahead.
Sincerely,
Rabbi Weinberg
& Zvi Goldfischer (Ritual Committee)

DVAR TORAH OF THE WEEK

RABBI DAVID SILVERBERG – WWW.VBMTORAH.ORG
Parashat Shoftim introduces the concept of royalty in Benei Yisrael. It speaks of the appointment of a king and
several halakhot pertaining thereto. Among the mitzvot applicable to the Jewish king is that he must write a Sefer To-
rah and keep it with him at all times. Rashi cites Chazal's clarification that the king must, in fact, write two Sifrei Torah
(Sanhedrin 21b). The first remained in the palace, while the other accompanied the king wherever he went.
Why were two distinct Sifrei Torah necessary? Why couldn’t the king simply keep one Sefer Torah with him at all times,
within and without of the palace?
A beautiful answer appears in the work Chamudei Tzvi by Rav Hersh Yaar. The two Sifrei Torah of the king re-
flect the two distinct elements of his personality that must be engendered. One Sefer Torah remains in the palace, rep-
resenting the king's private life. The other Torah accompanies the king when he leaves the palace, symbolizing the char-
acter he takes on in public. In ruling his nation, the king must be strong, resolute and confident. He must boldly uphold
justice and truth and courageously fight corruption and evil. When retreating to his palace, however, the king must pull
out a much different Sefer Torah, that of humility and self-scrutiny. In the privacy of his personal chamber, the king, like
everyone else, must constantly review his conduct in an honest and self-effacing effort to perfect his character. These
are the two Sifrei Torah that the Jewish king must study continuously throughout his reign.
