UNIT 4: PROPORTIONS
Fractions, decimals & percents are ways we compare numbers.
Fractions compare the number of parts to the whole
3
o Joe ate of the pizza
8
Decimals compare tenths, hundredths, thousandths, etc. depending on the
number of decimal places
o Mackenzie ran 100 m in 10.149 seconds
Percents compare the number of parts out of 100
o Steph scored 96% on her math test

Fraction to Decimal

Jonathan is a Web site designer for a company called Mega.Net. He had an original
idea for a new chat site.
To determine whether this site would generate enough income, Mega.Net analyzed
the number of people who use a similar site according to the number of months of
operation.
This analysis provided the following information:
At the end of the second month of operation, the number of users was equal to
1000 more than twice the number of users at the end of the first month.

At the end of the third month of operation, the number of users was equal to
three times the total number of people who had used the site by the end of the
first two months of operation.

For the first three months of operation, the total number of users was equal to
92 000 more than the number of users at the end of the first month.

a) How many users were there each month on the site that was analyzed?

It will cost $75 000 to design this new site. Jonathan estimates that each user who
visits the site will generate $0.80 in revenue from advertisers on the site.

b) At the end of which month will the Mega.Net company be able to reimburse the cost
