Most chests of drawers fall into one of two types: those which are about waist-h
igh or bench-high and those (usually with more drawers) which are about shoulder
-high. Both types typically have a flat surface on top. Waist-high chests often
have a mirror placed vertically on top, which is often bought with the piece. Wh
ile a user is getting dressed or otherwise preparing their grooming, he or she c
an look at themselves in the mirror to check their appearance. Some users may ke
ep lamps for lighting on top of either kind of dresser, and decorative items or
photos are sometimes added for appearance.

e 2000s, private office workers found that their side and back computer-placing
furniture made it hard to show the contents of a computer screen to guests or co
-workers. Manufacturers have responded to this issue by creating "Forward Facing
" desks where computer monitors are placed on the front of the "U-shape" worksta
tion. This forward computer monitor placement promotes a clearer sight-line to g
reet colleagues, increases computer screen privacy and allows for common viewing
of information displayed on a screen.

A combination of a small round table and a lectern seemed very popular as a writ
ing table. In western Europe, the invasions and internecine wars caused most of
the knowledge inherited from the classical era to be lost. As a result of the ne
cessary movability, most tables were simple trestle tables, although small round
tables made from joinery reappeared during the 15th century and onward. In the
Gothic era, the chest became widespread and was often used as a table.

In the eighteenth and early nineteenth century, however, the term hutch referred
to a tabletop set onto a base in such a way that when the table was not in use,
the top pivoted to a vertical position and became the back of a chair or wider
settee. In British English this type of furniture is known as a monks bench. Thi
s was a very useful form at a time when many homes had a large room used for mul
tiple functions, because it allowed a large dining table to swing up and out of
the way.
