Android has been around for quite some time, and is here to stay forever. ASUS
Zenfones having been rocking Android since its inception, and with Being Smart, come
even smarter issues that are quite underlying and go unnoticed to newbies. Here
are major firmware glitches that you often come across after you update your phone
(FOTA).

NOTE that THESE aren't issues by design, they arise because of system complexity at
large, and can be cured furthur by later updates.....

A) Why dont I get enough Battery Backup, after the update???

- After updating your firmware (after a large update), you might be wondering - Does'nt
updating the phone help with better battery performance? or - Why is the new update
sucking up all of my phones battery, it was okay before.....
-The answer is, to calibrate the battery again. The percentage of charge that you see on
the notifier top-bar is just a software working out the digital equivalent data about the
physical charge thats actually contained by the battery. And its calibration never
accurate by design on its own.

- Android weighs calibration by approximation and by the battery data collected. Here is
how you can calibrate your battery to the optimum level....

1. Discharge your phone fully until it turns itself off (beyond <1% mark). Regardless of
how much charge remains.
2. Turn it on again and let it turn itself off, without charging. Try it a few times, until it
refuses to turn ON, this is to drain all remaining useful power.

3. Connect the charger, without turning it on, let it charge until the on-screen or LED
indicator says 100 percent, and then Unplug the charger.

4. Switch on the device. It's likely that the battery indicator won't say 100 percent, so
plug the charger back in (leave your phone on) and continue charging until it says 100
percent on-screen as well.

6. Disconnect the charger, and restart it. If it doesn't say 100 percent, Connect the
charger and charge until it says 100% on screen.

7. Keep charging it until it says 100 percent (as much as possible) when you start it up
without being plugged in.

8. Now, let your battery discharge all the way down to 0 percent and let your phone turn
off again.
9. Now Fully charge the battery one more time without using the device (picking up calls
or anything for that matter) and you should have reset the Android system's battery
percentage.
- Battery Calibration should only be done ONCE after an update or after Factory
Resetting the Device. Repeated calibration will affect the physical battery life.

- Also, after it is once calibrated, make sure you use the phone upto as low as 15-20%,
as this will preserve and utilize each battery charge cycles to the fullest.

B) Why dont I have any space left after an major update? I haven't used
that space ever....

FOTA Updates (Firmware Over The Air), are actually first downloaded onto your phone
first before it begins updating it. And once the update is finally done with, the
downloaded file still might exist occupying the space.

Inorder to free up space, follow the following Steps -

1) Go to Settings > Storage > Misc.

2) Tick the update zip file, and also other files that you dont really need, and delete
them.
3) Periodically clean the cache of the Apps, Go to Settings > Storage > Cached Data,
and delete all appdata. U can also use CleanMaster app.
4) If its a large update, then consider Factory Resetting your Device after the Update.

C) Why it is better to Factory Reset before an major update, than

afters....

With heavy daily usage and 100+ apps, there is considerable amount of data cached.
And after an major update (Major jump in android version), apps might not be
compatible with the new firmware version.

You might end up with glitchy apps, and suggestions like to wipe cache partition, but in
theory and practice, Its actually better to factory reset your phone before the update, as
the new update will take lesser time to update and your phone stays clean when
jumping to the next major android version.

Inshort, the update has to deal with lesser clutter than with an bloated fully used - app
heavy- phone. Here's How to factory reset.

1) Go to Settings > Backup and reset.

2) Tap Factory data reset, and make sure you read the warnings (if you're doing it for
the first time).
3) Tap Reset if you wish to proceed.
4) Enter the 4 digit code it shows into the box, and tap Erase everything

Once reset, you can download the new update and run the new update. Once updated,
factory reset it once more to get rid of the space occupied by the Update and to start
anew with the device.

Remember, you don't need to Factory reset your Phone for minor updates (simple
updates staying within the same Android version). For such instances, wipe the cache
partition to get rid of glitches in apps and UI after the update.

D) Why Android UX is glitchy after a new update, and why Wipe the
Cache Partition?

Cache is a temporary space on the ROM space of your phone, that is used to store
temporary data that helps apps and system launch and function faster without wasting
time by accessing crucial data every time.

This cache space and term is different from the App cache within the settings, and is
more in-tune with core system services, like Camera, Wifi, Audio-Video, GPP etc.

Over time the alloted space overflows much more than the system can manage its
maintanance, and glitches arise when services cant write or read data from this
cluttered space, and hence its recommended to wipe it periodically. here is how you do
it -
1) Turn off phone, And turn it on by keeping the POWER and VOLUME UP key
pressed.

2) As soon as the device vibrates twice, release the POWER key and keep the vol key
pressed until you see the bootloader menu. (Android lying on its belly).

3) Navigate to the Recovery option using the volume keys, and press the POWER key
to enter Recovery.
4) The phone resets and enters a screen with a dead Android with an exclamation
mark. Once you see the dead android, Press and hold POWER Key and VOLUME UP
key, but release the vol up key quickly, and you should see this screen..
5) With the VOLUME keys, navigate to wipe cache partition, and press the POWER
key to select it.
6) You should now see the phone wiping the cache partition. It usually takes about 10-
20 mins, but DO NOT SWITCH OFF THE DEVICE even if process is working beyond
20 mins. Let it take its time.
7) Once done, Scroll up and select reboot system now, to boot into the system UI.
Only wipe cache partition if you have serious glitches with core system processes, and
not incompatible user apps, and for that wiping cache would'nt really help. BE SUPER
SURE TO NOT SWITCH OFF THE DEVICE WHEN WIPING CACHE

These were the main few glitches that are prevalent with every major update,
there is more posts upcoming on FirmWare issues, Stay Tuned.
