spectacular nestling amid lush green trees and
bushes in the beautiful Hampshire village of Easton.
Yet when Sarah Freethy, 46, and her partner, Philip Nockles, 42,
rst set eyes on it, it looked less than its now picturesque best.
There was a great view from the back garden up through the
Itchen Valley, but you couldnt see it from the house because there
was a massive leylandii in the way. Plus, attached to one end of the
cottage was a nasty 1960s extension, says Sarah. On top of this, it
was only half a cottage, as the original building, which dates from
the 16th century, had been split into two and only one side was for
sale. But Sarah and Philip were entranced.
It was way out of our price range, but it was love at rst sight,
says Sarah. Wed spent two years trying to nd somewhere we
both liked and had looked at dozens of identical Victorian terraced
houses, but they were so expensive and didnt give us much scope
for improvement. This was perfect, so we decided to make an offer
that was much lower than the asking price and were surprised and

hey were on the brink of getting married when Kitty
Kittley and her anc Chris realised that once they started
a family, their current home, a top-oor mansion-block
at a stones throw from the Thames in London, wouldnt
be ideal. Added to that was the fact that they love adventure and the
great outdoors hiking, scuba diving, cycling so were already
having some serious storage issues.
We come with a lot of equipment, laughs Kitty. We bought
a V W van to house most of our diving gear, but we also have lots
of bits and pieces for cycling and hiking and needed more space. In
2011, Chris proposed and we knew that if we were going to have
children, we wanted a house with a garden, on-street parking and
plenty of storage.
Looking to stay in London, and with larger houses well out of their
budget, the couple went to view a small terraced cottage in Battersea
and were impressed with the layout and clever use of space. The
previous owners had already done a lot of remodelling and a loft
conversion, adding in plenty of under-eaves storage, says Kitty. But
we could also see the potential for further built-in cupboards and had
the idea of building a garden studio to replace the existing small shed.
Selling their at and securing their new home went without a hitch
and over the following six years they got married, had son Billy and
transformed the small terraced cottage into a spacious family home.

Although she didnt win Lucy was the runner-up in the 2016
show she put together a series of colourful, thoughtful schemes,
which relied heavily on her DIY skills and creative mind. Shed had
plenty of practice with her own homes.
Lucy grew up in the area around Colchester and as an adult moved
to a Victorian terrace in Hackney, east London. After she met Tiff
and had her sons, she started thinking about returning to her home
county, where she still has close family. We knew wed get more
space, a bigger garden and more for our money out here, so we
made the big move 10 years ago, she says.
They bought a Victorian three-bed semi and revamped it to t
family life, which included converting the loft. But as the boys grew
bigger, Lucy started yearning for more space and another project.
Id really loved doing up the house and Id got the bug, so we
started searching in the spring of 2013. While visiting a friend,
I spotted the house next door, which had been owned by an elderly
lady, and it seemed intriguing, says Lucy. I had a quick look through
the windows and just fell for it!
There was plenty of interest when it came onto the market, and
Lucy and Tiff thought they didnt have a chance. It had lots of
original features as it hadnt been touched for many years, but it also
had owery carpets, textured walls and ceilings and shiny tiles. You
name it, it was there, says Lucy. But the thing that swung it for us
was that it had a massive crack C O N T I N U E D O V E R N E X T P A G E

in the sitting room wall. I think that put a lot of people off, but we
were reassured by the survey. Weve now had it stapled back
together and its ne. It looked far worse than it actually was.
After securing the house, Lucy and Tiff tackled the major projects
such as putting in a new kitchen and renovating and decorating all
of the rooms one at a time. The kitchen was two separate small
rooms; we took down the dividing wall and made it into a kitchen/
dining room so we can see straight through out into the garden,
explains Lucy. The large reception room at the front of the house
is so light I knew it had to be my studio. I do a lot of designing and
painting by hand so the light is important. Luckily theres a sizeable
room with a replace at the back with doors onto the garden that
makes an excellent family room.
The wooden oor in the hall wasnt in great condition, so
I experimented with a trompe loeil paint effect to make it look like
tiles and everyone comments on it. Lucy also used her design air
on the living room sofa. Its actually 22 years old but its such a
classic design that I dont want to get rid of it. When it gets grubby
I just recover it in different material.
Now that their bedroom and new ensuite are nished, the last
thing on the couples list is replacing the main bathroom. With its
bright primary colours, paint effects and retro furniture sourced from
a variety of places, including antiques shops, skips and my travels to
India and the Far East, the house is really us, says Lucy.
Shes also launched her own website, lucytiffney.com, where her

ising house prices proved to be a double-edged sword
for Eleanor and Jon Wilson. At rst they were delighted
to discover that the value of their north London at had
increased considerably in the time theyd lived there.
However the downside was that local prices had risen to the point
where they were beyond the couples reach. We sold our at within
three weeks but couldnt afford to buy a house in the same area,
says Eleanor. So we decided to relocate to Brighton as its where
I grew up and I still have family here.
A picture of a pretty double-fronted property caught the couples
attention at the estate agents. The fact that the entire house needed
work didnt dampen their spirits as they were able to appreciate the
big rooms with high ceilings, but the kitchen, projecting out at the
rear of the house, was particularly disappointing.
The garden sloped upwards and the kitchen felt overshadowed
and dark, as well as small and damp, Eleanor explains. But there
was a door leading into a storage room crammed with bikes and
shing gear that we could see had potential.
In August that year the Wilsons moved into the house and
decided their priorities would be to increase the kitchen size and
convert the loft. Architectural designer Rob Beer from Three/eleven
Design helped them draw up plans to knock the existing kitchen and
storage room together and extend into the side return to make a
large open-plan L-shaped kitchen that incorporated lots of glass.
He also advised installing a sloping glass roof, rebuilding the
two back walls, installing large windows at the rear and large sliding
doors to the side to open onto a new patio. As the house is in a
conservation area they needed planning approval for both the
kitchen and the loft conversion. Their application was submitted

a steel framework with oak worktops and also use these materials to
create freestanding open shelves.
They both enjoy cooking and entertaining so wanted plenty of
worktop space. The main constraint was a vertical supporting pillar
in the middle of the room, so they opted to wrap an island around
it and install a run of open shelves opposite.
Seeing the builders insert the structural RSJs gave Jon an idea.
Wed always planned to leave the vertical beam in the kitchen
exposed, but when I saw the horizontal ones being installed I asked
the builders to leave them exposed too, he says. They were bright
blue and the builders thought I was mad! But I knew theyd work
really well with our industrial look, and now theyre properly

STYLE
Most water features work via
a reservoir of water at the base,
which is pumped to the top
before it ows back down. As
the water simply recirculates,
mains connection isnt needed
The reservoir must to be
large enough to hold the pump
and volume of water required,
along with a catching area
to prevent spills. It may need
topping up occasionally 1
Many designs are self-
contained and come with
everything you need. Simply
add water and connect to an
outdoor power socket or one
in a garage or shed. Others
may require a separate pump
and reservoir. Be sure to 4
check before you buy
Consider the position of
your power supply and where
to get the best view of your
water feature, including from
the house. Avoid placing it
beneath a tree or it will need
constant cleaning 2
Solar designs work in direct
sunlight and are powered by a
solar panel and pump, so wont
need any wiring. For all-round
use, look for one with a battery
back-up that stores the power
when the sun goes down
Garden ponds make great
ready-made reservoirs pop a

Lighting can ensure your
feature creates a stunning
display after dark as well as by
day. Some come with built-in
low-voltage LEDs or halogens;
alternatively, you can buy a few 3 5
spotlights to illuminate the area
Consider how the feature sounds. You may find a gentle trickling noise

WORDS AND PHOTOGRAPHY CAROLE DRAKE

O
nce enclosed by a tangle of brambles and
old bedsteads, the house at Terstan is now
framed by a garden of owing spaces linked
by circular and oval shapes. The one-acre plot near
Stockbridge in Hampshire is the work of Penny
Burneld and her husband Sandy, who moved there
in 1975. Set in open countryside just 100 yards from
the River Test, the garden has plenty of beautiful
views, but along with the gorgeous setting came a
tricky combination of harsh dry summers and high
risk of ooding. Penny explains how theyve adapted
the garden to thrive in the different conditions.
THE BEGINNING
Id always visited gardens with my parents, but it was only when I had
a plot of my own that I became really interested in the subject and
began reading whatever I could, including Christopher Lloyds The
Well-Tempered Garden. His combination of plantsmanship and strong
design was a great inspiration. Sandy and I tackled the garden bit by
bit, according to what was needed at the time, whether it was a lawn
and a border on the west side of the house, or a terrace for sitting out
on the south side with a raised border around it to separate it from the
adjoining track down to the river. A circle seemed to t well there and
thats where the idea to use circles and ovals as a design motif through
the garden began. Theres a raised circular pond, a bark circle in the
wild garden and ovals marked out in brick in the gravel garden.
CREATIVE GROWTH
Finding out about gardening was a gradual process. I was so excited
by this new world Id be awake all night, making mental lists of plants
I wanted! As the years have passed I think my planting has become
bolder, inuenced perhaps by doing a degree in textile art that I
took in my forties at Winchester School of Art. I particularly like the
combination of deep red Persicaria microcephala Red Dragon with
a purple-tinged phormium and a woolly grey senecio in the front
garden. Large-leaved, exotic-looking plants have become a particular
interest, such as the wonderful grey-blue Hosta Krossa Regal,
Melianthus major and Tetrapanax papyrifer Rex. They make really
effective foils for other plants. C O N T I N U E D OV E R PA G E

LIVING WITH NATURE
As well as dry summers, weve also had to deal with ooding. One
year parts of the garden were under a foot of water for a month
and we lost some shrubs. I replanted with willows. You have to work 60 metres
with the existing conditions and fortunately, we rarely get ooding
as bad as it was that year. But we do get a lot of weed seeds blowing
in, mostly nettles and thistles, and plenty of rabbits visit us too!
When I plant something new I have to protect it with netting until
