GENERAL INSTRUCTIONS FOR LABORATORY REPORTS
The Laboratory Reports is to be written in a style of a professional engineering
report and should look like an engineering document. It is recommended that it should
be neatly printed.
The instructor and this Manual will provide specific instructions for laboratory
records for each test. The following are the general requirements of all Report Sheets.
1. Title Identify the test or tests performed.
2. Objectives State the significance (usefulness) of the test. A brief statement as
to what you are attempting to accomplish by performing the test.
3. Figure Draw the figure of all apparatuses used.
4. Test Results State the principal findings, data including tables or graphs. Each
table or graph should be self-explanatory including suitable title.
Use legend for data points and curves.
5. Computations Write the formula and the solutions.
6. Analysis Compare your results with any which are given in text, or other
references. Give reasons for discrepancies if serious differences
appear to exist. Mention limitations for test.
7. Conclusions Give a brief statement presenting a personal analysis of the results.
Statement about the reasonableness of the results should be
included.

iii
General Laboratory Instruction

The Materials and Testing Course provides credit for three hours lecture and
three hours of laboratory work per week. The laboratory testing has been earned so that
each test may be performed within the three-hour period.

Each laboratory period will consist of three parts, there are:

A. Short briefings on the test which are to be performed.

B. Actual laboratory testing. This will be done in groups of three or four persons. In
some cases, this may be a demonstration by the instructor.

C. The reduction of rough data, once the testing is complete and group has secured
its own data, the data will be reduced and all necessary computations will be
made. Each student will secure a copy of all data and calculations before leaving
the laboratory room.

In general, a report will be submitted one week after each laboratory is

performed. General notes on the reports are given on the following pages. Specific
instruction will be given for each test.

Most of the experiments require some preparation that must be done before
coming to class. Completing this readings/or calculation will prevent needless delay
mistake and wasted effort during the laboratory period.

During the laboratory period reasonable care should be used to prevent damage
to equipment and personnel. The equipment in the laboratory is for use and most of it is
quite rugged and not easily damage, however, if in doubt concerning the operation of
the equipment, ask the instructor or laboratory technician.

An essential element of good laboratory practice is maintaining a clean and

orderly laboratory. It will be the responsibility of each group to clean its own equipment
and area where their laboratory work is performed. All equipment should be check for
any damages before borrowing them and will be returned to its proper place.

Some of the test will require that someone will check on the test day following the
laboratory period. The group may delegate one person to do this. However, each group
member will be responsible for securing any data obtained.
