1. A) Draw the diagram of a moving coil instrument and label all the parts.
B) A moving coil instrument has a coil resistance of 15 and full scale deflection is given by
a current of 5mA. This instrument is to be adapted to operate:
i. as a voltmeter with full scale deflection of 100V,
ii. as an ammeter with full scale deflection of 2A.
Sketch the circuits in each case with all component values.
C) Explain how the moving coil instrument can be used for measuring alternating voltage or
current. (10M)

2. A separately excited DC machine when operating as a generator produces 260V DC output

on no-load when its armature rotates at a speed of 350RPM and flux per pole is 0.05Wb. The
armature resistance of the DC machine is 0.1. Determine the following:
i. The terminal voltage produced on 100A load, speed 350RPM and flux remains same.
ii. The terminal voltage on no-load when the flux is reduced by 10% and speed
increased by 20%.

When the DC machine is operating as Motor with 275V input voltage, 100A input current
and rated flux determine the following:

iii. The motor speed in RPM.

iv. The electrical power developed by the machine.
v. The electrical shaft power developed by the motor if the friction and windage losses

Primary (2000V side): R1= 5.5; X1 = 12;RC = 20,000
Secondary (400V side): R2 = 0.2; X2 = 0.45;
Draw the equivalent circuit diagram referred to 2000V or primary side.
Determine:
i. Secondary voltage at full load, 0.8 power factor (lagging), when the primary voltage
is 2000 V.
